Leading up to PEEPSHOW, a high energy art party and fundraiser for Buffalo’s non-profit media arts center, Squeaky Wheel will be giving a sneak peak at some of the exceptional talent to be featured. This year’s PEEPSHOW is Hot Mess themed and will be taking place on Saturday, February 23 at the Dnipro Ukrainian center at 562 Genesee Street. For this occasion, the Dnipro will be stuffed to a pleasantly overwhelming extent with art, videos, performances, music, dancing, and every other kind of imaginable hot and messy surprise.
The Dnipro Ukrainian center has a beautiful stage adorned with intricate hand painted forest scenes of trees covered in glittering snow. Peepshow will be taking full advantage of this set up to present an action packed lineup which will include funky sounds and visuals from the costumed Cinnamon Aluminum; the aptly self-proclaimed koolest kids kickin the dopest shit in Buffalo, KooLiE HiGH; and the band that combines funk, soul, new wave, and post-punk with an intense horn section for ultimate dancability – Mallwalkers (photo).
MJB Corporation and ABCDJ will be holding down the beat in between sets, and the lovely MC Holly Johnson will have more than a couple of sweet surprises up her sequined sleeve. The night will be rounded out with an unforgettable burlesque performance by Toronto’s Obskyura and a chance for party-goers to find themselves part of the act on stage by parading and competing in the Hot Mess Costume Contest. The prizes for Top Hottest Messes are no meager deal either – they include tickets to see Rihanna at First Niagara Center in March. Dress to impress and then look for the “Costume Contest” sign-up post at the event’s entrance when you arrive.
And just in case one stage is not sufficiently stimulating, there will be a whole other set of performances taking place in the Dnipro library on the first floor. These will include a code and video based, end-times oriented, noise/digital decay performance by d011001110110111101100100m; a hand painted 16 mm film with a live soundtrack by Patrick Cain; an audio/visual collaboration between Debora and Jason Bernagozzi; and In the Dark II – a performance in which Brooklyn-based artist Amanda Nicole Schmidt will sing Saves the Day’s album Through Being Cool in its entirety, a cappella, as the title of the performance indicates, in the dark.
You may have noticed that these posts are chockfull of run on sentences and semicolons – that’s because the Peepshow is simply too exciting for straightforward grammar.
