Vasilis Express brings recipe for success to Hertel

Is there place to eat there or is it only to go?
Very excited! A nice addition to the 'hood! Also happy to see that the malware warnings are no longer popping up when I go to your site. Is that all cleared up?
GREAT addition to Hertel! I can't remember if this place has any indoor seating or not. If there was it must have been limited.
There was no indoor seating as Grumpy's, that I recall. Only the patio for outdoor. The door on the left lead to an indoor area but I don't recall them using that either, although it would have worked as a carryout spot.
There was indoor seating and an indoor counter at Grumpys..you had to go in from the side. Maybe 10-15 seats. I would say its a pretty good street presence considering what they were dealing with..an old gasoline shack and a surface lot. I can't think of too many surface lots that I've wanted to check out..this was one of them.
I loved the place...but I can see why they went out of business. Probably 100 different types of ice cream to choose from and THEY WERE CLOSED ON SUNDAYS??? The closing time during the week was earlier than I would have expected too...8 or 9pm.
My last apartment was on Huntington and I cannot tell you how many times we'd drive by and see people looking in the window. You've got to be really ignorant to close your ice cream and burgers joint on Sunday..next to a park thats one of the little league capitals on Western New York.
I hope Vasili got a break on the sales price..last time I checked it was over $250k.
Not sure "incredible street presence" is a phrase I would use for what is currently a burger shack in the middle of a parking lot.
Glad to see it will be occupied again, and it being by a business with a successful track record is a good sign.
This is at the end of my street I hope to see Visalis make it but anthing that has gone in that building has failed when I was growing up as a child on Carmel ave this was a gas/service station and the building was remodeled and became a pizzeria and that failed then few other businnesses too that went in and failed. This part of Hertel ave needs some TLC or something cause its ugly. The gas station across the street is an eye sore and so it Lone Star and that liquor store also there was a coffe place on that area of hertel it was the old pharmacy that failed also. Hopfully someboday comes up with a good business that will make it on this end of hertel
The coffee place that moved into the ice cream shop failed already?
Yea the on hertel/parker is out of business. I think another one is going to move in there too. I think its tough place to do business its on the side of Parker yo dont even notice it when you drive by on Hertel.
Your dealing with the side of Hertel (Hertel itself..not side streets) that is unequivocally more residential that the other half. Of course your going to have normal operating businesses that serve every day needs--coffee shop, sweet shop, liquor store, corner bar etc...vs. $4000 couches at Room.
The curve from Parker to Main on Hertel is not my favorite at all and I think the street could be a little more "residential intimate" from Main Street all the way down to Starin maybe. Hertel is confusing sometimes..you go from industrial..to retail/commercial..to residential and the street itself doesn't change at all. Thats a big reason the Main St. end of Hertel gets dumped on..its got a commercial grade road for a highly residential end of the street. Slow things down a bit (road diet?)..and you'll have everyday businesses continue to pop up and fill in the holes like Vasili's
The real ugly problem isn't the Main St. part of Hertel...Hertel/Deleware is truly depressing. If I had one wish for a quality new build it would be ontop of burger king or the church parking lot
It's still there--and they're planning on increasing they're menu shortly. EATON Chocolate has filled the ice cream gap left behind by PHSS. There is a yoga/massage studio on the corner. Checker's Tavern is still serving beer. There is a wholesale bagel place too, right? Lone Star and The Liquor Store are alive an well. They are by no means upscale establishments by there is nothing shady about them. There is even a bike store and a boat (I think?) store in the area I think. Add on Vasili's Express and there is quite a bit going on in this little section of Hertel.
I've probably eaten at the Lonestar over 100 times over the years...no exaggeration...It's been a while though because as much as I find their food really tasty, it suddenly dawned on me how unclean and gross their restaurant is....if what you an see is filthy I can only imagine what you can't see.....too bad because their Tex-Mex has no competition in Buffalo.....even the Death Dog is tasty.
...just don't ask them for Frank's Red Hot. Lone Star sucks.
I am so excited! I love on the street, always go to the Elmwood location, but this is awesome! My husband is already talking about walking down in the spring and coming back with gyros lol Love it! Great to see the expansion.
I'm with Ivan and Sheldon - no go on Lonestar. This will be great to have in the area, we need a nice quick eat stop now that Grumpy's is gone. And this is so much healthier!
Your approach to this topic is unique and informative. I am writing an article for our school paper and this post has helped me a lot. Cheers
