NOLA

NOLA
If you've been wondering what ever happened to Lagniappes French Quarter Café in Allentown, then you might be surprised when I tell you that they moved deep into the West Side of the city. That's right, the restaurant is now being called NOLA (New Orleans Style Food), and has taken over the former Carmen's Kitchen location (Auburn and West). That's quite a move for owner operator Chris Silverstein, who is in the process of launching an additional food truck business (see here).

Lovers of Cajun, French and Creole food are still able to count on many of the menu offerings that Chris has been serving up in Allentown over the years, including many of the vegetarian options that customers (like me) relied on. These days NOLA might be more limited when it comes to seating, but Chris is depending on a solid take-out and delivery service to accommodate his Cajun food fans. NOLA is now serving Po Boys, pizza, and a lot of dishes in-between.

why not just go to Niagara Street, so close with a lot more visibility, I can't imagine the rent would be that much more. Love Lagniappes, we will go wherever they are (except transit) either way.

Not a fan of his food. Too salty and once it was the sides were cold. Sorry not a fan.

To hear that a restaurant moved from a prime foot-traffic location in Allentown to Auburn & West does definitely get one's attention. Even if, situationally, it was a move of convenience and/or necessity, it suggests there's a larger story here -- I mean about the upper west side.

Intriguing.

Very best wishes, Chris!

"upper west side."

Call out the neighborhood naming watch dogs! What do you think this is, RaCh? NYC?

Prime foot traffic, but how much business did they do? I'm curious about the building on Allen, if he owned it. It's for sale now, along with the building a bit closer to Wadsworth where I thought Melting Point was supposed to be going...??? I'll be interested to see how much it sells for. The Bend was for sale a bit back (building, not business) but I don't recall seeing how it ended up.

Melting Point is still coming! Last I heard, they should be opening late spring/early summer. Keep the faith alive.

When this was on Allen, it seemed like it was never open. The hours mustve been really wacky.

But it also means that Allen street and Elmwood have real issues....Meaning that the property owners are in most cases over valuing the properties and locations that they own....I have to imagine its almost impossible to run a small business in these areas if you dont either A: Own the building or B: have this operation as a secondary income and or hobby....

I'm curious about the reasons for the move. I know Chris was waiting a long time for a liquor license, and I know that the bar crowd wasn't very interested that in the cuisine after bar crawling, which is why they adopted the lucky dog menu. Despite having awesome food, whenever we went there, we were usually one of only one or two tables occupied - I never understood that, given the quality of the food. Maybe it was the times we went or perhaps, despite the foot traffic, the type of people who walk by were just not of the NOLA food-loving sort. The waitress told me once that after bar-hopping, all the people want is a burger & fries. I had the impression that their previous venue was more well attended, albeit a small hole-in-the-wall. They definitely needed to grow and didn't have the room to do so there, but when they moved a couple doors down, they lost that inviting visibility that I think was drawing people in at the previous location. The French Quarter Café was raised up and the interior was out of view. When I saw that it was closed and saw that a more inviting glass-front venue was being put together across the street, I had hoped they were going to move in there for the better exposure. But either way, we'll be getting some delivery from their new location. I'm looking forward to trying out some of their new pizzas that I keep seeing pictures of on their facebook feed!

Everytime we tried going the place was closed. We had no idea when to go because we couldn't find hours anywhere, even on the building. Living nearby, we wanted to eat there. But after hearing of many bad practices we just stopped trying.

This is the same experience that I had. I live about 2 blocks away and tried to go on several occasions and it was always closed. The only time I ever actually managed to eat in the building was at Lucky Dogs after midnight. When I did try to go, the posted hours seemed to indicate that it should have been open. It's okay to have limited hours, but you really have to make it clear when you will be open and then to follow the posted hours.

I've been a fan of the food since Chris opened in the little hole in the wall on Allen. I know a lot of people were upset about the hours but when you're essentially a one man operation, things in your personal life can take over. I urge everyone to try his new place on Auburn. The food is still phenomenal and you can't find it anywhere else in the city!

I'm not sure how to address the hours-personal life statement. I understand personal life complications, but it's a business. We spend our personal money, so we should accommodate to a private business? Hours... the complaint there is simply: POST YOUR HOURS!

Not a poke but a legit question. You say you can't find that food anywhere else in the city. Does a place like Shango not compare?

Yeah my main problem with this when it was on Allen was the hours.. it was very unpredictable whether he would be open or not - and I unfortunately gave up trying to go there on a more frequent basis. It's weird because he seemed to do better business when he was on the small take out place on Allen before he moved to the bigger one a few doors down. It was a nice space and had potential, but for whatever reason didn't seem like he had the business.. but yeah, closing early or not opening at all frequently and randomly certainly did not help.

I, too, like the food but, unfortunately, tried to patronize the restaurant twice (during "open hours") only to find it closed. He lost me after that...

being a resident of auburn ave. for over 25 years, and a west sider my entire life, I don,t think i would find myself patronizing that corner of the block after dark. I wish them all the luck for success, but I have never seen anybody survive for very long at that location. GOOD LUCK to ya !!

Id like to address our past wacky hours and our move, and Id like to personally say I am truly sorry to anyone who has ever found us closed during regular hours.

We have always been closed on Sundays and Mondays. Over the last 7 years on average I have worked 100 or more hours a week to run my restaurant. In the first three years I never closed early.

The forth year I was open I had 2 emergency surgeries, one for a hernia and the other was for a gallbladder. Both times I was forced to close for several days over several weeks. This hurt the business, but I got through it.

During our fifth year I went through a very painful and emotional divorce. In our sixth year I want through a terrible custody battle for my daughter, anyone who knows me will tell you that Leah is the most important thing in my life!

This past year I battled and beat cancer! I am not telling you guys this stuff for sympathy, I am trying to explain what was happening in my life that might have affected business hours and consistently being open when I was supposed to be.

I'm truly a one man show and things do happen in life that we can't control. I wish I didn't have to go through all this and hurt the business that I love so much.

I overcame all these obstacles and I am still serving you food today! I intend to be serving you great food for many years to come. I would also like to ask you to please give us a second chance. We are getting back to our routes and starting over again.

As for the move we lost a lot of business when we moved from the original location to the larger one, and I had constant problems with my landlord. I cant even describe how horrible it was to deal with this man.

I LOVE Allen St! But The street changed a lot over the last few years and I found myself having to work later and later to get the business. I am a single father and I'm 40 yrs old I couldn't work the crazy late night hours anymore and raise my kid. As I said I have been doing 100 plus hours a week for seven years.

The main reason for the move was because the city plans to do extensive construction to Allen St over the next few years, and I dont think I could have survived that.

I am also working on a food truck and I am trying to grow my catering business, The new location works great for the truck and catering. The Allen street location would not have worked for either of these goals.

Once again I am sorry for any inconvenience I caused you over the years, but I assure you I had no choice but to be closed at times.
