Go Red For Women

Go Red For Women
On February 1, 2013, join thousands of people as they wear the color red in support of joining the fight to end heart disease in women. Many people are not aware that heart disease "is still women's No. 1 killer - it affects more women than men and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined." Armed with that knowledge, it is important that awareness be spread, and what better way to do it than to join in on the movement?

The 10th Annual National Wear Red Day is Friday February 1, 2013.

Visit GoRedForWomen.org to learn how you can join in the fight to end heart disease in women. The American Heart Association's Go Red For Women movement is coming up this Friday (tomorrow). Mark your calendars, tell your friends, send an email, and help to get the word out that heart disease is a serious issue in our community and around the world.

It would be nice if this was not so feminist. Purple, Pink, and now red. I have absolutely no problem with the thought or the supporting the cure of the cause but why not include men?

My first thoughts on this were that it seems selfish to focus on just women. It's time women start to care about these same diseases that affect men. In fact I've known of more men with heart disease than women. It is not gender inclusive.

Support the men too.

"In fact I've known of more men with heart disease than women"

Isn't that the point? That most people already associate it with men and women need to realize it's just as dangerous for them?

It effects everyone. No need to try and make it "Red" February for women only because that is where it is leading. Ironic that the candy industry is only 2 weeks away from promoting the chocolate binge.

To isolate women only as a reminder of its statistical value with regards to the death rate is totally ignorant that it is a disease that is affecting the entire population.

What is the underlying message? That women are too fat and need to eat healthier? Many people associate heart disease with obesity and a high fat diet. Include everyone.

Dark chocolate is actually heart healthy.

" That women are too fat and need to eat healthier?"
They probably have a lot of tattoos also.

Whatever. No skin off my back. Although I think women should grow mustaches for Movember.

I guess it's fitting that this topic is slotted just above the "The 2013 Chocolate Affair" thread.

Both are fighting for your support.

Could it be that Red represents the heart or blood and not a feminine color?

It could but by the pic, title and description it doesn't. I don't see how who dies more should change the fact that Heart Disease kills the most people, men and women, we're talking 11% to 9%, not a huge difference. More men actually die but if you break it down to a percentage it shifts towards more women.
(cite http://www.cdc.gov/heartdisease/facts.htm)

I'd much rather more all encompassing awareness campaigns, take the Breast cancer which takes 40,000 women a year to 30,000 men that die from prostate cancer, but if you look at the money spent on research it is far more disproportionate.

i think you're right. thanks to the susan komen foundation, women are probably convinced that the largest cause of death among women is breast cancer, when it is really heart disease.

YES, we need more awareness! Awareness of this cancer, awareness of that disease.
