Done Deal: 495 Main Street Sold

Done Deal: 495 Main Street Sold
The dreary former Burger King at Main and Mohawk has finally sold.  DC Wholesale Inc. purchased the building yesterday for $140,000.  Dollar City Wholesale, owned by Shaker Abuhamra, is located at 1210 E. Ferry Street.  Abuhamra's plans for the property are unknown.  The two-story, 5,865 sq.ft. building, built in 1978 with seating for 140, had been owned by a New Jersey-based corporation.

WNY School of Bartending had been looking to buy the building and relocate its programs from Clarence to the site.  The school was planning to expand its offerings with a culinary arts center, full-scale restaurant and a barber program.

The Burger King property has been empty since the restaurant closed in September 1998.

Odd how no one ever wants to tear down crap like this. There was an amazing 6 or 7 story building on this site that was removed to build this piece of crud and it was hailed as great progress at the time. Use this as a guide to what is often sold as progress in Buffalo.

I heard Mayor Szymanski really likes this building, comparing to several architectural masterpieces in Pittsburgh and Cleveland.

yes, the rebuild in place of Beth Steel might look like this building only 10x larger.
more progress...

Was this the site of the former New Century Theater that was torn down in the early 80s?

No. The Century Theater was behind this property, where the parking lot is now. The lobby of the theater was the only part that fronted on Main Street. Where the mural wall and new fence are now.

Had some dealings with the folks at WNY School of Bartending--total tools. So, this might not be a bad thing (unless "Dollar City" = Dollar Store).

Better than a vacant building.

That might not be true. If this becomes a locally owned version of a dollar store, it will probably not contribute much to the improvement of the block that are otherwise starting. There is a large population that could use a store dedicated to inexpensive, low quality merchandise, but that might not be the highest and best use of a property in that block.

It would have been better if this building had stayed vacant for another year or two until someone with higher aspirations had come along to buy it.

How's that for elitist jumping to conclusions?

Dollar city wholesale? Does this mean we're going to get a 2 story dollar general instead of that neat bartending school idea?

Dollar City Wholesale appears to be a wholesaler for candy making supplies.

So, will this become a candy store, an office or both?

Here is something for you all to reflect upon once again from my response to an earlier post. This was written 100 years ago and still applies today especially in this case.

"The evolution of the town presents many curious features, but nothing is more striking than the impermanence of improvements. What one decade achieves, the next destroys. The pride of today is the scorn of tomorrow. By 1837 most of the business buildings were of brick, and some of them of very good architecture. It is not always the poor and shabby that are replaced. Improvements depend upon eligibility of site, or enterprise of owners, or the accident of fire. Thus it happens that much of our best disappears for things newer but perhaps no better, and much of our worst, to our civic shame, remains."

Open for twenty years closed for fifteen. If the King works anything like the Clown “McDonalds” they only engineer their building to last twenty five years not saying they don’t use them longer. If so this building must some real structural issues being empty unmaintained for fifteen years plus the twenty years in use.

We're probably getting a corner store.

Even though a quick search on Google shows that this company is a "candy making supplier" and Yelp says it’s a “candy store” (more appropriate), if the new owner is Shaker Abuhamra he owns at least 10 properties in Buffalo, and 2 in Kenmore, including 958 E Ferry ("Exclusive Gear/Boost Mobile/Express mart" - corner store), 1210 E Ferry and Fillmore ("Ferry Express Mart" - corner store/gas station) and the large 22,000 sqft 65 Grant near Ferry ("Shakers" - corner store). Check them out. Is this guy a good neighbor and smart business man, or just running cheap corner stores selling sugar, salt and shit?

There has to be a higher and better use for this location but it's a free market and after 15 years, maybe not yet. I don't blame him for picking this up. A corner store here on Main St will be very popular.

Why couldn't Lloyd have moved in here permanently?

The proposed new owner owns many other corner stores throughout the east side - at least 10 by my count. Here's hoping better for this space.
