We've made First Contact

We’ve made First Contact
Back in May Visit Buffalo Niagara (VBN) announce that it would be creating a Visitor Center at the Buffalo Niagara Airport (see story). Yesterday VBN unveiled the Visitor Center located on the secure side of the airport, giving travelers the chance to not only learn about our cultural assets and business climate, but to ask questions about the area. Thanks to a grant from First Niagara, we can now be proactive when it comes to selling our city.

Can you imagine all of the lost opportunities that we have had to showcase Buffalo in a deserving light? I can just imagine travelers asking, "Where's the nearest hotel or restaurant?" What do you think that traveler's experience turned out to be? A stay at a hotel with a view onto the airport. Now, a traveler will be given information that will allow him or her to make an informed decision as to where to stay and what to do during a stay. Whether it's a video that ultimately makes the sale, or a brochure, or a live interaction with a VBN associate, we finally have some ammo when it comes to pitching our assets.

This is a crucial first contact if we are to consider who or what might have been first contact previously. We've all heard the stories of cabbies diverting visitors out of the city, because of lack of knowledge when it comes to progress being made towards an urban renaissance. How many cabbies are familiar with the Honu House on Elmwood? Or Beau Fleuve on Linwood? I doubt many, if any. We can now arm our visitors with the information that they will need in order to make their visit a productive one - one that they will enjoy and tell others about.

Incorporated into the Visitor Center is a Buffalo Niagara Gift Shop that features merchandise from many local businesses and artisans. It's just another piece of the puzzle that will help to get the word out, and direct people where to go when visiting and shopping Buffalo. "This new visitor center positions Visit Buffalo Niagara to share the story of our region's world-class attractions, dining and accommodations to the five million passengers who fly in and out of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport each year," said Visit Buffalo Niagara President and CEO Dottie Gallagher-Cohen. "This is a tremendous opportunity to strengthen our brand, especially among the large number of Canadians who use the airport."

*The center is open Sunday through Friday from 6 am to 7 pm and Saturdays from 6 am to 6 pm. First Niagara Bank provided a generous $100,000 donation to defray the costs of the center, the Wendt Foundation provided a grant for technology and BHNT Architects and LP Ciminelli contributed their services for the build-out.

Well how often do you travel to a city that you've never been to without booking a hotel first?

I think this is nice and all, but in my experience traveling to other cities I typically exit the plane and head right to the baggage claim. I don't hang around the airport by the terminals to check out the visitor center. So wouldn't it make more sense to locate this by the baggage claim so people waiting for their bags might have an opportunity to check it out when they arrrive to the city? Locating this upstairs is great for people waiting for their plane however they're also leaving the area at that point and this is moot.

Hi brownteeth -

"Locating this upstairs is great for people waiting for their plane however they're also leaving the area at that point and this is moot."

Thank you for your feedback, but this is not moot. One of the biggest reasons we placed the visitor center on the secure side of the airport was to appeal to Canadians, who make up a huge percentage of the passengers traveling through BNIA. These travelers often drive down from Ontario, take a return flight out of BNIA, and then drive home, without spending time in Buffalo. Our intention is to inform them of options for their NEXT trip, to encourage them to spend a day or two in Buffalo for entertainment or shopping before or after their next flight to Florida.

Regarding the value of this location for passengers who have made Buffalo their destination, every exiting passenger, whether they are going to baggage claim or if they have only a carry-on, must walk past the center to leave. Even if they never enter the center, the exterior has a series of video screens that inform them of attractions and events around town.

We opened this center on July 9 and it has been very successful so far. Between that time and the end of October, we've had more than 25,000 walk-in visitors there. For comparison, our other visitor center in downtown Buffalo had just over 11,000 visitors for all of 2011.

I guess that makes sense. One major thing (I'm sure you're aware of) to address the Canadian tourism is:

A) getting PBA to move the concrete barriers at the Peace Bridge so anyone entering the US can immediately exit onto Porter Ave.

B) Once they are on Porter, have signage placed pointing them to the various districts around the city. I notice many cities have that and it's helpful.

Why isn't there a Buffalo and New York State visitor center that drivers from Canada would see immediately upon exiting the Peace Bridge? Over 2,000,000 cars came into the US in 2011. Wouldn't it be prudent to take advantage of this audience and have a building that truly showcases Buffalo and New York State?

They have some cool stuff in this store and it looks really good too. I bought the beef on Weck for Dummies for a friend of mine. I am in the airport close to 3-4 times a week and I always thought it would be a great idea to have a New Era Cap kiosk. More people than you might expect fly to Buffalo just for caps and I'm sure tons of people do not know new Era is a Buffalo company. A small kiosk placed just past the Jetblue gates or by the soon to be closed Airtran gate would do very well here. Just an idea. Keep up the good work at the airport.

How about a staffed pop up tent during the summer down at the harbor especially during major events, i.e. Navy Week.

In addition, it be nice if they consolidated the Metro Station and the Exhange Street Amtrak Station down by the harbor to create a intermodal hub and open a permanent center in the northeast corner of the Aud block.
