When it comes to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO), there are always a handful of musical initiatives that can be claimed as precedent setting. Take the concert that is being held on November 16, 17 and 18 for example. It's being recognized as the first-ever triple trombone concerto written by a major composer (Eric Ewazen). This, of course, is a significant designation, and one that will bring recognition to the trio, the composer, the BPO and the city of Buffalo. After all, this type of music composition is usually written after recognizing the talents that can ultimately pull it off. Putting the wheels in motions speaks volumes of the achievement that has already been made by the players.
To add to the significance of the night, there is an heartwarming Buffalo story behind this trombone trio. The three musicians have come to call Buffalo home in a way that is a testament to the city and to the BPO. Not only have the three meshed on stage, drawing attention and acclaim to the resulting sounds, they have also solidified tight bonds outside of the performance arena. According to Kate Mockler, Communications Coordinator, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, "Timothy Smith, Jonathan Lombardo and Jeffrey Dee all hail from different parts of the country. They have made Buffalo their new home. In a city where previous trends have witnessed people moving out, they have moved in, met their wives and fiancées here, and in some cases, purchased homes here."
Here we have a real success story of an unexpected nature. The synergy created by the trio onstage has led to significant on and off-stage developments. "The Buffalo Philharmonic is very lucky to have one of the most dynamic and musical trombone sections in the country, and Eric Ewazen's new concerto is an extraordinary recognition of their brilliance, and an overwhelming gift to our orchestra," said BPO music director JoAnn Falletta. "Eric is a superb composer whose works are beloved all over the world, and his special talent for writing for trombone is legendary. This concerto will be part of the legacy of Jon, Tim and Jeff and their tenure in the Philharmonic. We know it will be played by trombonists everywhere, and we are especially proud that it was born in Buffalo."
In order to help solidify this unusual musical success story for future generations, the three trombonists are also getting together to offer a trombone master class to area students on Saturday, November 17 at 2:30 pm. What better way to pass along the trio's amassed knowledge and synchronized energy?
