There's a new cabaret and variety show starting next Tuesday, and the venue is Milkie's on Elmwood (the former Elmwood Lounge). If you're into the underground performance art scene, then this is something that you should check out.
Organizers are touting the ongoing series as "A weird, wonderful, and art-damaged cornucopia of local and out-of-town music, comics, writers, eccentrics, and oddities, featuring art, writing, comedy, and performance." Yes, it's being billed as a strange variety show that will captivate the imagination by introducing you to a set of locals who are known to be noise musicians, comics, space jammers, drag performers... and the best of the rest. As long as it's a little bit out there, chances are that it will be appearing at Milkie's for a Switched-On Wicker Man show!
"SWITCHED-ON WICKER MAN" #1 (THE FIRST EDITION OF A NEW CABARET/VARIETY SHOW)
At Milkie's On Elmwood (the former Elmwood Lounge)
522 Elmwood Ave
Tuesday 11/13 | 8pm | $3 | All ages
FEATURING: Housefire, Robert Breast, Fe Vajen; Pat Kewley; Kristi Meal; Fantasia Thunderpussy; DJ Jill März and DJPK ; and assorted other oddities!
The impresario of the series is local performer Neil Coletta, who describes his vision for the events as a combination of Hugh Hefner's "Playboy After Dark" crossed with Glen O'Brien's legendary 80s NYC public access show "TV Party", refracted through the lens of an outerspace French cabaret.
To give an idea of the defiantly-eclectic flavor of the series, the lineup for tonight's inaugural edition of the variety show will feature two electronic music acts from Asheville, NC (noise-dance duo Robert Breast and acid-trance artist Housefire), local noise musician Fe Vajen, comedy from writer/artist/performer Pat Kewley, Club Marcella drag performer Fantasia Thunderpussy, a presentation by Kristi Meal from Rust Belt Books, and other as-yet-unannounced miscellany. After the show, DJPK will be playing an assortment of switched-on spaceage 70s Moog jams on vinyl, and Buffalo/Berlin DJ Jill März will spin set of garage, punk, glam, & new wave treats.
For those who miss Aimee Buyea & Sugar City's legendary "Not The Usual Suspects" parties, "Switched-On Wicker Man" promises to be a psychedelic, unpredictably-diverse celebration of underground art and performance in a cozy setting.
