Passing of Margaret M. Martin

Passing of Margaret M. Martin
Renowned Buffalo watercolor artist Margaret M. Martin has passed away. Margaret's studio was located on Elmwood Avenue in Allentown, identified by its vibrant floral shop windows, reminiscent of the colors she used in her works - the obscure little storefront boasted one of the area's top artistic talents. Martin was a figurehead in the Buffalo arts community.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Margaret M. Martin, a vibrant person and an exceptional watercolor artist who touched many people both locally and across the country.  She was a long-time member of the Buffalo Society of Artists and one of the founders of the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society locally. - Buffalo Society of Artists

Margaret will be missed by many. She was a true artist & a kind person who took the time to explain her work. Her studio remains one of the hidden gems of Allentown with its awesome light & wonderful rear courtyard garden.

In the late 1980's, my office was a couple buildings away from the studio. At that time, it was also the office of Margaret's father, Earl Martin, who was a prominent architect in Buffalo. Mr. Martin worked into his late nineties, with both of them arriving together each day.

Margaret Martin was a great friend to the Junior League of Buffalo. Several years ago she illustrated the Junior League's award winning cookbook: "Great Lake Effects: Buffalo Beyond Winter and Wings". She would often stop by the League's Headquarters, a few doors down from her studio, to sign copies of the cookbook to be used as special gifts for out of town visitors. She had a wonderful demeanor and seemed ageless. She was a treasure and will be missed.

Margaret Martin was a great friend of the Junior League of Buffalo. In the 90's she illustrated the League's cookbook "Great Lake Effects: Buffalo Beyond Winter and Wings." Over 50,000 books have been sold to date with the final sale projected to take place at the spring 2013 Decorators' Show House presented by the League and the Buffalo News.
She often would come to League Headquarters, a few doors from her studio, to sign copies of the book which would later be gifted to out of town dignitaries visiting the region. When she traveled to other regions to teach her seminars, she would take copies of the book with her to share with her new found friends and students. She was a Buffalo booster; a hometown treasure and will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Three of Margaret's paintings hang in my house and inspire and bring me joy each day. There is one more on the table in my own studio waiting to be framed that I bought just three months ago when I stopped by for a visit at her studio. I feel so privileged to have known her, experience her kindness and generosity, and will mourn the loss of what I still had hoped to learn from her. What an honor for the city of Buffalo to have been blessed with such a talented and giving person.
