You neglected to mention the large parking lot. We must organize a boycott.

Have you been to the corner of Elmwood and Hertel? Anything would be an improvement there. This has a chance of bringing a lot of people to the struggling part of Hertel/Elmwood.

I'm actually am surprised its being built inside the city limits at all; but hopefully one cleaned-up street corner begets the other corners to follow suit.

True. On another note, the sign's typeface looks sharp. But in all caps doesn't it look like it's yelling at us?

You can save the monthly membership $ and instead walk from your parking spot to the door and burn a few thousand calories in the 2-3 hours it would take.

Irondequoit and Henrietta are "Greater Buffalo"?

You're right Rob. I originally though that they were in Greater Buffalo, and then never changed the wording when I found out where the locations were. Changed it to Upstate NY.

It is a gym and will have like 10,000 members. they NEED a big parking lot. besides, it is on arguably one of the ugliest stretches of Elmwood there is... lol a boycott. maybe you should organize a boycott of the vacant dickies donughts that has been gracing the corner of elmwood and hertel for the past 15 years.

yes, of course, so that people can drive to the health club in order to walk on the treadmills.

this pretty much sums it up:

I do agree it seems kind of paradoxical on a superficial level to drive to the gym in order to walk on a treadmill. That said, it is nice during the several months of winter we have around here to be able to walk in relative comfort indoors. Or if you happens to live in a place where walking isn't safe, it's also a good thing. In any case, anything that gets people to walk at all can't be all that bad. The demand seems to be there for it too.

Wait...Dickies has been vacant for 15 years now?

That Dickies has literally been there since I can remember. One day, I was waiting for the bus to go home when I worked at Kinkos and I went in and got a donut. It was like I was transported to a truck stop coffee shop in Kentucky. And it was the worst donut I have ever had.

JCC is overcrowded because it is one of the best/only options in the area (especially if you are anti-BAC). Hopefully this new gym will draw some people away from the JCC and make it more tolerable after Jan 1. More gym options is a good thing.

I am not one for big box chains, but it is good to see something happen on this parcel.

And don't forget about the new Autozone that is opening in the old Don Pablos building. Another empty building gone occupied.

If you want to improve the intersection/corner of Hertel and Elmwood buy the land to make a third turning lane for Elmwood and Hertel. I do everything possible to avoid the traffic a couple of times a day.

it would be nice to get some politicos off their asses to get the corner of Elmwood nad Hertel out of Frank Denny's hands. This unsightly corner of vacant land has been even before Dickies went out of business..home to some abandoned cars, hucksters who set up shop to compete with taxpaying small business owners.
He apparently would rather sit on this busy intersection piece of property than see a prosperous business developed there...politics with / during Maiello's mayoral stint stopped the new firehouse from being built here, and instead at the closed in tight location where Mc Donalds once stood.
Seems Rocco Termini has his eye on the defunct FWS warehouse building just down the street...more lofts??

I think the firehouse works good where it is. I would hate to have seen what should be a great commercial corner turned into a firehouse. But the empty land it is now isn't useful.

It is where Elmwood and Hertel go to die.

Great addition to this part of the city. I belong to LA Fitness in Minneapolis and can speak first hand to what a well run operation it is. My fees are $25 per month, which is a deal for everything they offer. I believe there is an initial fee as well, but considering you can use any club in the country... Well worth it!!!

Anyone that complains about this addition is probably one of the obese individuals chain smoking cigarettes waiting for a bus that is all too common.

I hope people support this!!

I think it would've been wise for them to front the street if the parcel allowed, with parking in the back. It seems like they chose being barely visible over the in your face exposure that being close to the street would provide. Corporate conventions, maybe.

I haven't checked from Hertel, but it seems part of their location strategy was for visibility from Hetel, as well as Elmwood.

All-in-all, I don't care. The size of the parking lot is more ridiculous than the perennially empty Office Depot (moving?). But we'll see how used this place is.

My bigger concern is the insanely large empty parcel on the southwest corner of Hertel/Elmwood. All that traffic that goes by there and Benderson hasn't swooped in to put in a Subway/Starbucks/Coldstone/etc.? Shocking.

same reason no one has bought the NW corner.... Leni won't sell for anything approaching a reasonable price. If you want the SW corner, all ya need is $2.25MM.... so have at it.

yeah it is set back far enough that if you don't already know to look there you will never notice it driving by. But you can see it clearly from Hertel as well.

The Office Depot has the same problem. The old Frontier Lumber building comes right up to the sidewalk, which means anything traveling nothing doesn't even see the Office Depot.

That's probably why Office Depot is moving to Delaware Ave. More noticeable.

I wonder if Benderson actually paid the fine for demolishing the historic Kittinger building without a permit.

I was quite offended a month or so ago when I discovered LA Fitness's "unique" advertising strategy. Someone had driven down my block (and a couple other adjacent blocks) and thrown onto everyone's lawns little plastic baggies weighted with sand and containing a paper flyer for this new location.

I am confident that advertising by random littering is illegal, and all it did for me was guarantee that I will never go to LA Fitness.

Score: 2 ( 4 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

That's ridiculous. No better than Best Fitness windshield littering down Bidwell. You know about 2% of those people might actually do something besides crumple and throw on the ground.

But good luck trying to finding out if they have a permit. I've called the permits office before to get no answer and no responses to the multiple messages I've left when trying to find out if the Scientologists have a permit to litter my neighborhood.

Kinda the response I'm used to getting when trying to get some sort of service from City Hall.

I'm surprised there is a market for this here. It seems like there are a lot of smaller gyms/fitness centers very close to this location. I can think of 4-5. Is the attraction the larger facility and pool? I was surprised by the lack of visibility from Hertel, set back so far and with the foliage. It took me a few time passing by to catch it out of the corner of my eye. Too bad the SW and NW corners of Elmwood/Hertel aren't available - either would have been a better location with more visibility.
