Bark Park @ Black Rock Canal Park

Leave a commentHave they considered banning pitbulls I wonder? Cause if not they should.
Why? Every pit I've seen at the Barkyard has been socialized well and got a lot fine with the other dogs.
And that for the most part might be true. But theres a reason why there banned in Canada. However I do believe it comes down to the owners fault for there stereotyped behavior for rasing most of them wrong.
well, A bad owner is not taking their dog to a dog park so it kinda auto eliminates bad pits.
I'm on the fence about breed specific legislature. If you bans pits, people are going to rotties, ban rotties, to dobbie, etc until the thugs are walking around with viscous poms
Canada also prevents the sale of alcohol on sunday.....needless to say, it's a little backwards up north
You're either intentionally trolling, or are completely uninformed. Why don't you just ban YOURSELF from the park, and let those of us who actually have dogs get along like we always do?
Troglodyte.
I have two dogs, and thoroughly enjoy the parks with them. All I know is that when people see a pit coming they go the other way. It creates unessecary tension at what is supposed to be a fun and enjoyable place. Not saying all are bad. But I stay out of the ghetto anyways so it doesnt really matter to me, you can have it. ENJOY!
Yep. You're just trollin'.
kthxbye.
BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) is total bs. You have to judge dogs individually, not just based on stereotypes and assumptions. I happen to have a pit mix and I bring him to dog parks all the time. He gets along great with other dogs and has a blast running around with them. If you actually learn about the breed you'll find that the public opinion is mostly media driven (anything to get viewers/readers).
Before I adopted my dog I didn't know anything about pits either, so I was hesitant to choose him. But after doing some homework on the breed I found out what they're all about and haven't looked back since.
The problem is people like you who form an opinion without looking up facts/getting experts opinions. Unfortunately many people look for affirmation instead of information.
Small but nice looking. Good substitute to going down to LaSalle park
Seems like an extremely stupid use of a waterfront park with extremely limited space when you have oodles of vacant lots and land around this neighborhood.
Fine idea, terrible location.
That location wasn't being used by anyone. Now, it's being improved, and will be used daily, including throughout the winter.
You should move to Minneapolis. There are plenty of people there just as uninformed as you. You'll fit in nicely.
You could put a diaper shop on the waterfront too and that would mean its better used. doesn't mean its a good idea. They're going to pour millions into this site, that doesn't have a lot of acreage... so that dogs can enjoy the waterfront.
You act like its a dog park or nothing. There are lots of uses that can help activate a waterfront park - and they're spending plenty of money to do it. This is a really poor choice for a waterfront park with limited space. It takes a big chunk out of the land while significantly increasing maintenance. I don't hate dog parks, but this is a stupid idea.
Did you get peed on by a dog when you were a child? Dog owners pay for these dog parks through the license fee... which is effectively a focused tax... so we get a fenced-off area in a park to use.
If you want to complain about wasted parkland, there's a golf course in Delaware Park I can point you to.
As for your Waterfront argument, it is invalid. The general public will have access to the area closest to the water, the dogs and their owners will not. The walkway in the drawing is OUTSIDE of the fence.
If you have actually LOOKED at the drawing, you might have noticed that, instead, you took the opportunity to complain about an issue that doesn't exist.
Are you sure you're not from Minneapolis?
I've been involved with other dog park initiatives. Your "significantly increase maintenence" argument is invalid as well. That particular argument has been used before, in other cities, and it is without merit.
Quite frankly, you don't have the slightest idea as to what you're talking about.
"They're going to pour millions into this site"
It would be the first dog park in the history of the planet that would cost "millions".
You're so full of it, your eyes are probably brown.
You are an idiot. The estimated cost for the buildout of black rock canal park is somewhere around $3-$5 million. We're just in phase 1. Glad we're spending that money for a walkway OUTSIDE the dog fence.
Dog parks increase maintenance by 60% over non-programmed recreation space.
It's a stupid idea.
As someone who a) lives/owns a home in Black Rock and b) frequents this area (known before as the Ontario Boat Launch) I'm excited to see this going on. The land specifically where the dog park is going has been unused for years; this is a relatively cheap upgrade. It will hopefully attract outside folks who want some recreation time with their pooch, as dog parks are few and far between. The vast majority of the "millions" everyone is rambling about goes towards renovating the boat launch, expanding a deck over the drainage creek, adding green space and eventually building a 5200 square foot mixed use facility that will accommodate businesses and possibly Homeland Security.
This area was super busy, even crappy and rundown, with fisherman, parents out with kids in strollers, people walking dogs, joggers, etc. This can only be good for Black Rock and the city in general. It's a great use of one of the few areas where we have access to the water (not taken up by privately owned docks that don't allow non-members and even put chain link up around the bike path). The money is also going towards improvement of the path running from the launch up to Tonawanda, along the water, which has magnificent views.
Maybe you should actually read the plans, haters.

That CSO #055 (Combined Sewer Overflow) is the mouth of Cornelius Creek. Hertel Ave was once known as the Cornelius Creek Road and followed the creek up as far as the area near the North Park Theater. The bends in Hertel Ave from Tonawanda St to Elmwood Ave are due to the meandering course of the creek.
Early settlers reported signs of multiple native american village sites along the creek. Many artifacts were found in the area during the late 1800's indicating hundreds of years of occupation.
The creek is buried in a culvert and now serves as an overflow for sewage during times of heavy rain.
