Our neighborhood gardens offer us a support system that we just can't do without these days. Can you imagine what the West Side would be without all of the beautiful gardens that were once abandoned lots filled with debris and old building foundations? It's hard to travel down a West Side street without witnessing, first hand, the benefits that community gardens provide. Often times you can also see the further public and private investment that unfolds around a community garden. These efforts bring neighborhoods together, increase property values, curb crime, and bring visitors (and potential homeowners) into neighborhoods that they might not normally visit.

To see some of the recent efforts put forth by Grassroots Gardens, visit their Facebook page. It is there that you will find information on the group's upcoming Harvest Celebration. This will be the sixth year that the event will take place - the Celebration has become a great way for the community to support the amazing efforts that go into greening the city. Not only must the current gardens be maintained, there are always more gardens that need to be planted. Join in on the celebration and meet the people who are busy planting strong roots for all of us to enjoy.
