Sharrows show up on Elmwood and Chippewa

Sharrows show up on Elmwood and Chippewa
You may have seen by now, that bike sharrows have been added to Chippewa and Elmwood. Sharrows are street markers that signal to car drivers that bikes are allowed to share the road. On stretches of road where there is not enough space to accommodate a bike lane, sharrows are used so that cyclists know that they are welcome, and drivers know to respect the cyclists. In essence, the sharrows are meant to say, "Share the Road".

Earlier this year we saw sharrows added to Richmond Avenue, in along stretches where the road was not wide enough to accommodate bike lanes (between Bidwell and Forest). The sharrows act as connectors between parts of the city that have, or will have, dedicated bike lanes.

In other bike-friendly news, the regular and contra-flow bike lanes and traffic signals on Linwood Avenue have been installed and are operational. I spoke to a few of the cyclists using the bike lanes, and as expected they were thrilled with the results. One of the cyclists (photo below) told me that he normally travels to and from work on Main Street, but changed up his daily route to Linwood once the lanes were completed. I also spoke to a resident who said that there has been a noticeable change in post-work traffic patterns. "For years people have been using this street to race out of the city," he said. "Now they're either not coming down Linwood or they are going a lot slower... and that's a good thing."

Unlike the Linwood project, I actually like this idea. Let bikes and cars "sharrow" the road instead of dividing it into, bikes over here and cars over here.

S Elmwood Ave is soon going to be repaved between W Chippewa St and W Genesee St/W Eagle St. Hopefully they'll add some bike sharrows to that stretch as well!

Bike lane's on Chippewa? Great, now The General can salute pedestrians in total safety.

I think the sharrows have mostly worn off already on Richmond.

i spotted the sharrows on elmwood this morning and was surprised to see them in the driver's lane instead of the door zone, where cyclists are expected to travel. does this mean that as a cyclist i can take the lane more often? i do it when the travel lane is narrowed by a semi parked or double-parked for unloading.

The idea behind sharrows is to tell drivers that bikes are vehicles just like they are and have the right to use "their" driving lane if needed. Bikes are not and have never been required to travel in the door zone, but they traditionally do because it segregates faster traffic from slower traffic. Bikes should continue to travel at the right side even where these sharrows exist unless they have a reason to take the whole lane, but reiterating to drivers that bikes aren't *required* to travel on the right side is thought to help make biking safer because it reminds drivers to look for bikers on the road, wherever they are.

Is the second photo Linwood? I thought the bike lines were going to be on the other side of the parked cars.

And any updates on the project on Elwmood between Forest and Iroquois? It looks like they are putting down a strip of asphalt on what used to be the wide sidewalk on the psychiatric center side of the road.

That was discussed at the last CitiStat Buffalo meeting for the Department of Public Works. They are adding a wide path for bicyclists and pedestrians on Elmwood Ave from Iroquois Dr to Forest Ave and then it will go down Forest Ave to Richmond Ave. It's purpose is to connect the bike paths at Delaware Park to the bike lanes on Richmond Ave, to the bike lanes on Porter Ave and then to the Riverwalk bike path at LaSalle Park.

Here's the video of that meeting. They start discussing it 18 minutes into the video.

Very very happy about this but think about how poor the drivers are in this area. Between crap drivers and bikers not following road laws, this gonna be a blood bath.

Agreed. Some cyclist is going to end up as a red streak on the pavement, because the more militant ones are going to sse the "sharrows" as a license to take over the entire lane of traffic.

I'm curious to see how well this works out on Elmwood. In Minneapolis, the cyclists seemed to think that the "sharrows" gave them the right to ride right down the middle, traffic behind them be damned.

My experience with cyclists in Minneapolis and Buffalo leads me to believe that there are going to be some issues with uninformed cyclists.

I know I'm going to get shredded by the two-wheel human-power demographic, but come on... none of you obey traffic laws unless you think you might actually get hurt.

One of you ran the red light at Elmwood and Utica this morning, causing me to have to brake abruptly, and THEN yelled "fuck off" at me when I blew my horn at him... I drive a 4000 lb. SUV and you would have been turned into paste had I hit you.

We ALL have to share the road, but you cyclists act like you deserve special treatment.

New York Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1231 states:

Traffic laws apply to persons riding bicycles.

Every person riding a bicycle upon a roadway shall be granted all of the rights and shall be subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle by this title, except as to special regulations in this article and except as to those provisions of this title which by their nature can have no application.

I couldn't agree more with you! I was at Lafayette and Hoyt and watched a cyclist blow right through the four way stop sign as an older lady had already stopped and was making her ascent in her Saturn... I know there made out of plastic and he would have just bounced off, but he started screaming at her! SHE HAD THE RIGHT OF WAY! So of course I yelled in her defense! It's just amazing how entitled some of these cyclist are... If you don't know the rules of the road then don't be on them!

Sad but true. Elmwood's a nightmare to drive on as it is most of the time because of the congestion, so who knows how this will end up. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with cyclists, but I really hope they are capable of sharing the road and not clogging up traffic or disobeying the traffic laws.

Riding a bike in Boston is a dream come true. People understand that a bike follows all rules and that a bike is allowed on the road. As much as I would like Buffalo to have this same understanding, it does not. People in this town, not including myself, hate everything slowing them down including people in their way. Better keep your eyes open cause lil miss Williamsville/OP/Amherst is on her cell phone, lost and driving too fast. wear your helmet.

Unfortunately, I completely agree with you. Also, as we have seen in NYC, the more bikers, the more bike lane congestion, the more accidents from that.

I don't understand the reticence around wearing bike helmets--just do it. It's not fool proof, but it helps.

Time will take time, but Buffalo culture will become more understanding/accommodating of bikers.

Ha ha. You are kidding, right? I've seen plenty of a-holes in Boston riding their bikes down Comm Ave ignoring traffic signals. I've not seen ANY cyclist obeying traffic laws in Buffalo. None. Nada. However, they demand equal access and give you the one finger salute if you dare to call them out by honking at them. Give the police the right to impound their bikes until they pay a traffic fine and I'll reconsider. Thumbs down on militant cyclists congesting Elmwood Ave.

That's a somewhat self-centered and short-signed attitude you are displaying.

Elmwood is a bustling, busy street full of all sorts of mixed traffic. If you're looking for a means of getting from point A to point B as quickly as possible in your car, perhaps you should be using a different road like Richmond or Delaware.

EV and the West Side are very bike-oriented communities; this is something you're going to have to live with if you plan on spending a lot of time in these areas.

The car has had the ultimate advantage for many decades now and still does in most places. In those rare places where people actually value different means of living, it's no longer about the "me me me me me me" that defines American culture everywhere else.

Good idea, but it will do no good. Drivers on Elmwood don't accommodate pedestrians, why would bikes be any different? Combine that with the fact that most people on bikes don't obey the rules (ride the wrong way or on the wrong side of the street, ride on the sidewalk, blow through stop signs, etc.), means this was largely a waste of time. Why would anyone ride down Elmwood anyway? I always take a more quiet parallel street.

so now bicyclists can get hit by drunk drivers too, not just pedestrians.
