Say Yes Buffalo Unveils “Letters to the Superintendent, A Community Responds” at Book Launch Event

The International Center for Excellence in Animation at Daemen College in the Tri-Main Building hosted a reception this evening for the unveiling of a first of its kind book in both Buffalo and the nation - "Letters To The Superintendent, A Community Responds."  The book is comprised of letters written by community stakeholders and presented to Dr. Pamela C. Brown, the new Superintendent of the Buffalo Public Schools.

Letters were written and submitted by students, parents, teachers, refugee and immigrant families, former Board of Education members, community researchers, university faculty and many others. The book was compiled and edited by Dr. Peggy Brooks-Bertram, CEO of Peggy Bertram Publishing (photo below).  The project was supported by Say Yes Buffalo.

_MG_4107.JPG"This timely compilation of letters is essential reading for all of us who care deeply for our community and most importantly, our children," said Dr. Edwin Clausen, president, Daemen College. "It is a cliché to say that they are our future but this collection says it with commitment, passion, compassion, and complexity. The letters are for all of us and should promote dialogue and understanding of the task at hand and how we must provide thoughtful support for the new Superintendent."

"I am humbled by the vision expressed by so many in the community and in particular the youth of our community as to what they want from their public education system," Dr. Brown said.  "I am committed to make these goals and aspirations for the Buffalo Public Schools a reality and I am confident through the support of those who took the time to write their thoughts and others that this will be successfully achieved."
"Say Yes Buffalo enthusiastically supported this initiative and it is our intention to work with Dr. Brown to help her achieve her goals for reforming public education in Buffalo," said David P. Rust, executive director, Say Yes Buffalo.  "If we can help Dr. Brown fulfill her goals, then those who wrote to her in this book will see their hopes fulfilled as well."

"In all, this cacophony of voices creates a magnificent chorus of congratulatory pronouncements, a recitation of community history expressing who we are and how we arrived at this point and with expressions of hope and faith in the future of Buffalo Public Schools,"  Dr. Brooks-Bertram said.

Peggy Brooks-Bertram was my American Pluralism professor at UB! What an amazing woman. Absolutely adore her and the importance of her work.

Can Brooks-Bertram put a date to when those letters were gathered and dated, especially the ones from Buffalo public school children and their parents?

I attended the reception and have the book.

Dr. Clausen's remarks are on-target and they are not an exaggeration.

Don't know the dates. However, the book's preface indicates "the decision to initiate the letter writing campaign preceded selection of a new Superintendent by at least two months."

At The Buffalo Public School website's link to the District Parent CC there was a picture of Bertram promoting those letters from children. That reference to those letters was datable and is now gone, replaced by a picture of Supt. P. Brown.

Although there is plenty online about Brooks-Bertram and her connections, any reference to what would refer to her gathering of those children's letters is not findable.

PLEASE tell me that the BPS system would not use the words of innocent children to promote either a not yet contracted superintendent or yet another book!

At that DPCC site there is something else that is curious. At a site such as the Buffalo public schools that should be accessible by the public, there currently and recently is a video at that DPCC link that is visibly scrolling downward in black only. Across the video the screen reads: This video is private.!!! There is also a reference to that video being findable on YouTube.

The preface of the book clearly outlines . . .

"The purpose of the book is to encourage a diverse constituency's engagement in a community wide letter writing campaign that permits residents to share their thoughts directly with the new Superintendent."

"The book is structured to emphasize students as key constituents in the District. For instance, the original plan was to group the letters by respondents – students, parents and others. The final decision was to list contributors alphabetically."

"The rationale for this choice was to ensure that Buffalo's students were fully integrated in the book rather than appearing as a separate entity that had to be singled out. Thus their letters are scattered throughout . . . Additionally for student privacy and to encourage complete candor, their letters are only identified by initials."

From cover to cover the book is impressively packed with intelligent, thoughtful comments of support, observations, suggestions, etc. It’s a good read even for those who may not be very interested in the affairs of Buffalo’s public schools. Included is a letter written in Spanish and one in Arabic (with translations). There are 134 pages.

It is available for about $12 with the money supporting the Say Yes initiatives.
