New Pilot Program at the Peace Bridge

New Pilot Program at the Peace Bridge

In another, "too little, too late" move in the Peace Bridge neighborhood, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer has announced a new pilot program at the bridge. The program entails the temporary relocation of the U.S. Customs screening for inbound trucks and cars to Fort Erie. This would have been a welcome move years ago before the Public Bridge Authority was moving full-steam ahead with demolishing the immediate neighborhood, but now it's a bit of a moot point.

It's no secret that the Public Bridge Authority (PBA) plans on building an expanded plaza at the base of the Peace Bridge. What is secret are the exact expansion plans and to date a comprehension plan has yet to be made available to the public. This hasn't stopped the PBA from proceeding with construction though. Token efforts at abating pollution problems such as the idling policy which amounts to a suggestion to truck drivers to turn off their engines and the misplacement of air monitoring equipment that won't even measure the right size of particle matter in exhaust fumes are empty gestures at best.

It would appear that the relocation of Customs screening to Fort Erie would be essential in order for construction on the new plaza to take place, given the small foot print on the American side. The removal of the screening in Buffalo will certainly go a long way in tilting the abovementioned air monitoring station results.

If local and regional politicians were really concerned with the pollution from idling truck traffic why not make the relocation permanent? The negative health effects of living and working near the Peace Bridge have been well documented for over 20 years. Better yet, relocate commercial truck traffic altogether to a border crossing that doesn't abut a highly dense, urban area.

To the untrained eye, this appears to be progress.  But for those that have contracted cancer, asthma, and other respiratory alignments living in Buffalo's West Side it's more of the same political empty gestures and spin we've come to expect.

Interested in learning more about this health issue affecting all Buffalo residents?  Come out to a public informational session hosted by the West Side Environmental Defense Fund on October 24, 2012 at 7PM at the Lafayette Presbyterian Church located at 875 Elmwood Ave. Buffalo.

The relocation being permanent would be great. It's freightening being on that bridge with hundreds of other cars when it was designed to be driven over not sat on!

Put it on Grand Island.

For one problem (among several) with that idea, Canada & Ontario won't agree to it.

If the War of 1812 had turned out very differently, that might not be an impediment but ...oh well, spilled milk at this point.

This should throw a twist in everything....

A new study is pointing the finger at cooking burgers. As you know, Burger King is right there. According to this study, they are doing much more harm than 30-50 idle trucks.

"An 18-wheeler diesel-engine truck would have to drive 143 miles on the freeway to put out the same mass of particles as a single charbroiled hamburger patty," said Bill Welch, principal development engineer at UC Riverside's Center for Environmental Research and Technology.

Does this pilot program coincide with the air testing? I imagine the air on the US side will test somewhat better with truck inspections in Canada.

There is no need for an additional bridge spaning the Niagara River. What we are lacking is shared coordination and planning of cross-border traffic.

The single most important occurrence would be the merging of the two bridge authorities - PBA and Niagara Bridge Commission - which currently act separately from one another. At this point traffic, especially commercial traffic, can better be coordinated and redistributed at the region's various crossings. Customs and security investments can better be tailored to the nature of traffic at each crossing - commercial traffic at Queenston-Lewiston, passenger traffic at the Peace Bridge, etc.

I wonder how the residents near the Peace Bridge in Ft Erie feel about this...

Also if they want to expand the plaza that badly, then why not go with a massive enclosed structure that can process the pollutants as well as have the capacity needed?

It doesn't have to be a large box either. It could be an architecturally interesting building that also could double as an iconic gateway into Buffalo and the USA. Cost a ton of money? Of course; but if they want it that bad then they'd better show us the money and give in to at least some compromise.

I'd like to be re-admitted to my own, native country of birth without paying for either a passport or an "enhanced" (read: extra expen$ive) license. Oh, wait - White People born in Buffalo,NY & going for lunch in Fort Erie are suspects in the 9-11 murders. I forgot that.

The building of the Peace Bridge was approved by the International Joint Commission on August 6, 1925. Edward Lupfer served as chief engineer.[2] A major obstacle to building the bridge was the swift river current, which averages 7.5 to 12 miles per hour (12.1 to 19 km/h). Artikelstammdaten
