Hope for Showplace Theater
Comments
Leave a commentThank you for bringing life back into the Showplace. Open the doors, and the crowds will flow in in support.
Wondering if you might be able to partner with a micro brewery so as to bring in a consistent revenue stream...
Please Please please keep this this place open, it's where I saw the Damned. The Donnas were great there too. Charge all you want for alcohol, I'll pay.
That was a kick ass Damned show. I was front center. Dave Vanian let me sing quite a bit.
It was on my bucket list.
I was hanging out by the bar on the right side facing the stage so I wouldn't be away from my precious beer.
...but keep it's trashy charm! People didn't pack that place because the beer selection was great and the bathrooms clean. It was a great venue because the bands were crazy and the place felt like home for us ol punx!
Look at the proposed renovation. I don't think you have to worry about losing the
"trashy charm".
It was for sale for a few years for around $90k, you could have bought it and invested your money to fit your personal tastes. Instead you decided to just talk trash about someone elses investment you didn't have the balls to make yourself from your keyboard as usual.
The adjacent 27 unit apartment building, that had been for sale and in somewhat neglected state of repair was recently purchased by a California investor. Perhaps , hopefully some investment in the appearance of this next door building will be improved, and the quality of the inhabitants will be more closely monitored as this address has been the source of many police calls for some time, will enhance this corner along with the ol' "gas house" as my parents used to call this "Unity Show" when they were youngsters and attended shows here. I even remember attending and paying 15 cents admission....brings back memories.
You looked at the facade "upgrades" and you're hopeful? I guess if you like prisons.
You sound like a tool who would of gotten pissed on in this place. Tucked in polo shirt and khakis and shit.
I prefer the "improvements" over the ones the Continental received.
Oh the old Showplace....what a delight you were. All those Hardcore shows back in the 90's...Slugfest, Despair, Union, Snapcase...to my early twenties and The Sheila Divine, Tugboat Annie, to even some big acts. Ahh, the bathrooms and that fun walk into the dungeon basement. The few left over rows of theatre seating and then...the bar. I couldn't wait to drink at the Showplace! LOL
People on this site are now concerned with the appearance? Give me a GODDAMN BREAK for once and for all. I seriously doubt it's going to come back as a neighborhood movie theatre (like North Park). Besides, keep it's rustic charm. Anyone remember the old Mercury Theatre up the road at Military (right across from the American Brass Factory).
Open it back up, have shows. PERIOD.
I agree, but the problem we have here is that 99% of the people on this site want to turn this place into to some community artisan bakery swap meet or some shit. The days of punks like you and me are over my friend, and these nerdy losers will make sure of it by tearing the heart out of any original or crusty joint like this because it doesn't meet their cultural or artistic standards. Besides, I would rather lick the floor of the old showplace bathroom than let these nutsacks take credit for the revival of this place.
Punk has also gone out of style a long time ago, it hurts but it's true, can't bring the 80s back no matter how hard you try. Rap is king now LOL

Longtime reader of this site (and I sincerely do appreciate people off all stripes who are trying to improve this city); but I had to sign up in order to vote a thumbs up to your comment!
Thanks brother!
And yes punk is out of style and that's the way people who enjoy punk like it.
This is something people need to know about. Your blog is really incredible and the design is really top notch. Really, your blog is incredible. Cipto Percakapan bahasa inggris

Whining by the penniless architects and preserstructionists about glass block in 3.... 2.... 1....
I could imagine the challenges so any change has to be positive, right? Is glass block cheaper, though? Or is it just because greater or lesser cost be damned, the windows are gonna be broken by punks? If that's the case then maybe the neighbor to the right has the correct idea with the roll-down steel door... which seemingly they have in place to protect.... nothing?
"the roll-down steel door... which seemingly they have in place to protect.... nothing?"
Seemingly nothing? Isn't it seemingly possible the roll-down door is trying to prevent theft of metal (plumbing, etc), and/or other parts of that building's interior?
Then, by that measure, shouldn't your home and mine have roll-down steel doors?
LT, regardless of commercial or residential, any building 'should' have any legal types of proactive security as an owner wants of course.
I'd think a vacant building like next to Showplace has more risk of metal thefts than if occupied, and also being in a relatively isolated spot like that end block of Grant with very little night traffic adds risk too.
"I'd think a vacant building"
Vacant building?
Yeah, hasn't the storefront with roll-down next to Showplace been without a business for a while?
I could be mistaken but I thought it is. Regardless, there's also non-vacant buildings in Buffalo using roll-downs (Fam Dollar at Forest/Grant for one maybe? ...probably there's quite a few in different areas)
But wondering - what business is next to Showplace if not vacant?
Or is it a residence, or are we using different meanings of vacant?
Perhaps different 'vacant' s. I have seen activity, but haven't seen the door open in a while. As WAREHOUSEFOOL says, it's their right to have it. It just seems like a hell of a door with seemingly little to protect. So what the hell is that place and why the Fort Knox-door?
1067 Grant is a 27-unit 411 (apartments). Owned by "Showplace Associates L P".
In retrospect, it appears I was mistaken as to which building you referred.
lol, yeah the building to the right. With laziness of actually looking on googlemaps, I believe it is two doors down to the right, towards Amherst St.
Huge roll-up steel door. Could stop 7.62mm. I'll draw the line with .50 cal.
