Sneak Peek at Illuminate AK

Sneak Peek at Illuminate AK
For those of you who need a tantalizing visual in order to get excited about an event or a project, take a look at this teaser that the Albright-Knox has sent along. This is an example of what the Illuminate AK event will look like on October 5 (see details here). The difference is that instead of seeing a static image, like the one seen here, the show will be a constantly rotating series of projected images that will take viewers on a trip through the history of the gallery - its players and its artists (and their works). Just thinking about some of the works of art in the collection, and how they would look in a 3-dimensional configuration on the Gala Waters side of the gallery... this is going to be one breathtaking event.

From my last post:

From 7:30-8:30pm, a 30,000-lumen projector will be aimed at the facade of the building and the efforts of a large-scale 3D video projection mapping project will be viewable. In essence, the entire face of the gallery will be illuminated by a 3D video that will transform the building into a living spectacle.

Albright-Knox Curator for the Collection Holly E. Hughes and Digital Media Manager Kelly Carpenter will be working closely with video-mapping artist Daniel Hartnett who has created projections for music artists such as David Bowie and The Beastie Boys.

How cool would it be to have a movie projected on the outside of a grain silo and have boats watching it from the river. I find it hard to believe that someone couldnt find a flat space to project onto.........?

I do know projectors that push out 30,000 lumens are over $100,000. So I'm sure that's a big reason why most people haven't attempted to do this yet. But it certainly would be cool.

Would you really need something that powerful though? Im not talking lighting up the whole thing, maybe just a 50 x 50 foot section.

Projector is only 1 part, the screen either mounted or painted needs to be reflective. The only flat Grain Silo is the Lake and Rail which is in use, it would be great with the Mutual park right across the way. It's not as easy as getting a bunch of ladder and just rolling on some Behr silver paint, you have to have a boat with a lift take care of it.

The Connecting Terminal across from Canalside wouldn't be suited unless a screen is mounted, this adds more difficulty, although they have a crane there now, wouldn't be too hard to drop it down and slap a screen on, but you'd either need an extremely powerful projector or a barge to carry the projector closer to the screen.

I'm not saying it can't be done but these are the basic things holding it back so maybe someone will figure out a better way or find the funding to do this.

Thank you for the information. I never thought about the elevator across from Canalside, but yeah that would be perfect. How hard would it be to get an old movie screen from a drive in and put it on the outside of the grain elevator? I found the link below. I'm going to call this guy and see what the price would be.

I think the connecting terminal elevators right across from canalside would be prime for something like this!

Amazing idea to bring another dimension of "Art" to the experience for everyone visiting the museum and neighborhood! Excellent!
