Each year Literacy Volunteers throws a big fundraiser that benefits adult and children's literacy programming in Greater Buffalo while allowing attendees to dress up as characters from their favorite books. Yes, there are plenty of costume parties around town throughout the year, but there's something about this event that brings out the best (costumes) in people. After all, what's more creative than letting your imagination run wild with an author's vivid description of a character? Most characters are open to interpretation - even if two guests come dressed as the same character, chances are that the costumes will be very different. It's not like the movies you know... books lend themselves to painting different pictures depending on the reader... and that can be a lot of fun when attending Cocktails in Character.
Not only will there be food and drink from local restaurants, there will be performances by Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus and Fleuron Rouge & The Bellydance Academy. There will also be a costume contest with prizes, raffle baskets and silent auction items. So who's your favorite character? What's the attire that he or she would go as? It's time to get into character for a good cause.
Cocktails In Character: Thursday, October 25th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Shea's Performing Arts Center. The event benefits adult and children's literacy programming in Western New York and admission is $35.00 in advance and $40.00 the day of the event. Shea's Performing Arts Centers is located at 646 Main Street and for more information, visit www.cocktailsincharacter.com.
