Butterwood Opens for Business

Butterwood Opens for Business
Yesterday was the first day that Butterwood Desserts and Butterwood Sweet and Savory, located in the Hotel @ The Lafayette, opened for dinner. I spoke with owner Claire Bacon who told me that the soft opening would soon lead to regular business hours as early as next week. In the meantime, starting at 5pm, customers and diners are welcome to check out the amazing transformation that has occurred in the restaurant. My favorite addition to the dining room is the sharp, white banquette seating (see before). The banquette seating helps to divide the large room into a dining area and a bar area. I'm also a big fan of the curved pizza bar, which is tucked away in one of the corners. The tall ceilings and the natural light give the restaurant a signature appeal that is unlike any other place in the city. Historic architectural elements offer a perfect balance against the updated designs. Architecture and design firm Carmina Wood Morris designed the Butterwood space.

There is no doubt that visitors are going to be impressed with simple and elegant format. Seating capacity looks to be around 80 people, though the layout offers an intimate-yet-lively dining experience. It's interesting to think that the Butterwood restaurant business is only a small part of what Claire Bacon specializes in. The crux of the operation is not even visible from the dining room. Those familiar with the Butterwood success story know that the business revolves around the sweet and savory lines - the business ships desserts all over the Eastern seaboard and the mid-Atlantic. It's all in a day's work for Claire and her staff, who also create wedding cakes, and will soon be operating a breakfast, lunch and dinner destination with a smoothie and coffee bar to boot... seven days a week!

At this point in time, The Hotel @ The Lafayette has become a beehive of activity. Take a walk through the lobby and down the hall, taking in all of the pleasant sites along the way. Once at the end of the hallway you'll find a set of stairs that will lead you to this new culinary find. Or you can enter directly from Clinton Street. Either way, Butterwood is a real treat for anyone looking for a breath of fresh air in a historic born again Buffalo setting.

Will they be competing with Mike A's for customers? It looks fantastic but how many restaurants do you need in one place?

Any idea who the chef is at Butterwood?

This is not a dig. But this project is just awesome at every angle. So much so that I wish it was 100% hotel. It could be a high 4 star hotel and that would have been awesome.

I agree on the hotel component...It seems that with 3 restaurant bars inside, all hotel would of been ideal...I imagine the thought of AM&A's project could of been on his mind and the potential hotels there...but now that that is off, I wonder if it would of been better....

The chef is Scott Donhauser.

Any good business person knows that creating vibrant environments attracts more business, so having multiple restaurants offering a variety of services and products in one place makes good sense. This is why fast food joints and coffee drive thrus build across the street from one another, or why restaurants clump in groups in airports or malls. Not that any of these restaurants represent that type of food, but I'm glad to have the variety and liveliness downtown!

Scott's a great chef---loved his food at Daffodils Steak and Seafood Restaurant.

I believe Scott was the chef at the old Stillwater. I hope he brings back the french onion soup. Definitely the best I've ever had. Awesome fall and winter comfort food.

Had a business colleague stay at lafayette last night, all restaurants were packed and hotel at full capacity. Hyatt, Embassy and Hampton also sold out. Almost had to put my visitors up at Adams Mark but got the last room at lafayette.

The woman knows what she's talking about. Bet your colleague had nothing to do though at the Lafayette. She said the area is boring, so, you know...

On A Tuesday or Wednesday night> That is great to hear...I hope its a sign of good things to come....The airport hotels may have gotten alot of the visitors in the past but now with the city turning a corner and entering higher end hotels and restaurants into the mix, business folk will want to make the taxi drive downtown....

I think we need another hotel, or boutique near Sheas on Franklin or very close...Darcy Mcgees is awful, maybe Croce should revamp that great building into a boutique...Keep the roof top bar, have the1st floor be a restaurant slash front office and use the other floors for 40 rooms or so...

" maybe Croce should revamp that great building into a boutique"

Yeah, but... don't you think he already has enough on his plate? The biggest news out of Statler City in the last 6 months was Carl Cox. And that boutique hotel idea sounds awfully familiar. Oh yeah, because that's what the Curtiss was supposed to become like 3 years ago.

I know and agree with you...It was just a wish thought.....Darcy Building would be a nice spot for a Boutique but the Curtis building would look incredible if it were taken care of from the outside in....
That is too bad that he has gotten to much on his plate because the exterior of the statler needs him badly and also Curtis

I'm not completely up to date on things. Is this the same Butterwood that had the landlord dispute in Williamsville and moved out? If so, I can't believe the transformation!

Yippee! And right across the street from my office! With this and Vasilis opening next week, I might have to stop whining about eatery choices! :)
