Lovejoy District Streetscape Project Planned

Lovejoy District Streetscape Project Planned

Mayor Byron W. Brown and Council President Richard Fontana announced today plans for a million dollar plus improvement project for the Lovejoy District, which will include East Lovejoy Street, Clinton Street and East Delavan Avenue.  They also announced that LiRo Engineers, Inc. has been hired as the Consultant engineer for the project.

The streetscape project, scheduled to begin next spring, will include street lighting replacement with energy saving LED lighting, pavement reconstruction curbs, sidewalks, drainage system plus new handicap accessible walkways.

Mayor Brown said of the $1.3 million dollar initiative, "These types of projects only add to the quality of life for the residents and businesses in the area. Significant infrastructure improvements like this also strengthen the neighborhoods and help attract new investment into the area. I want to thank Council President Fontana for his diligent work on this project."

Council President Fontana added, "These Lovejoy District communities are already desirable neighborhoods and these improvements to the business strips will further enhance their appeal to new and existing residents."

The project is expected to be completed by the summer of next year and will be funded through the City's capital budget.

The Buffalo News article says "bike lanes" but the drawing only has sharrows. :-( I wonder if that will be the case for all three streets.

This is good news to hear. Perhaps the area being redone will reduce crime and maybe bring in business to this area. It could use it!

Looks kinda cheap on the trees

Even those cheap trees look better than the model train sized trees currently occupying Clinton St.

"Any love is good love."

First of all, please lose those outdated light posts. There are many more modern and environmentally efficient light standards available.

RaChaCha, since it's the Lovejoy Council District, it must be the south side of East Delavan between Bailey and Eggert. The north side is the University District.

Thanks -- although I doubt they'd try to do just the south side of the street :)

Streetscape design should be done by architects, urban planners, and/or designers. Not engineers or planning departments.

When is the city going to redo the streetscape of Chippewa? Seriously. It's pathetic looking for supposedly being 'the nexus of nightlife' in Buffalo, as it's portrayed in visitors' guides, etc. The street desperately needs paved, new sidewalks and brighter, new street lights that you could possibly hang banners on to better 'brand' the area to outsiders. I could have sworn there was $500,000 set aside somewhere by or through the city to get this done. What are we waiting for??

After you get done paying for the consultants and engineers how much is really left for improvements?

The graphics leave much to be desired.

Buffaboy... Sorry but streetscapes, much like most designs don't change the underlying economic, social, and political structures that truly impact crime and quality of life. Money does more than anything but most in Elmwood see revitalization, design guidelines, aesthetic fetishism, and improved quality of life as positively correlated to decrease crime and increase business formation. In fact it's gentrification via higher incomes, higher levels of education, and the good ole American diet of consuming cities And urbanism that correlate positively to reduced crime and more businesses. So if somehow that neighborhood can be gentrified, it'll be one it way to prosperity and homogeneity just like Elmwood.

As for how much the consultant gets... Usually in the are of 10% of the total cost.

Hooray for streetscape improvements. The new streetlights on Grant let us see the pot-holes, garbage scroungers, and abandoned houses marked for demolition MUCH better. Same for Lovejoy and Delavan. Hoo freaking ray.

Let's be honest, it's Lovejoy. Any love is good love. You cannot be picky.

Fingers crossed that sizeable territory can be done with $1.3 million.

Having the sidewalks "completely" replaced will be great. (Patch quilt repairs like the City made on Prospect Ave. are nothing to be proud of.)
