Helium Balloons Buffalo's Comedy Scene

Helium Balloons Buffalo’s Comedy Scene
Did you ever hear the expression, "Be careful what you wish for, for it may come true"? In the following case, I am hoping that more Buffalonians wish for whatever it is that they desire, because sometimes all it takes is a wish to bring something great to this city. In this particular instance it's comedian Kristen Becker (Dykes of Hazard) who has wished for 'something great'. It all began about a year ago when Marc Grossman, owner of Helium Comedy Club in Philadelphia (Facebook) called her up and asked that she consider using an online booking website (strictly for comics) that he had created. Kristen in turn (this part actually sends shivers down my spine) asked Marc to open one of his national comedy clubs in Buffalo. At first Marc wasn't exactly sure what to say. Then he told Kristen that Buffalo wasn't on his list. That's when Kristen (more shivers) told Marc to give her the funding to do it herself. And that's when Marc began to take her seriously.

Before long Marc and his brother (business partner) were on a plane to Buffalo. Kristen was determined that the two would be taken care of, so she took them around town, introduced them to people and showed them the city in only a way that Kristen can. "Sometimes it can be to Buffalo's benefit that its national image is not the best," Kristen told me. "Because if you can figure out a way to get an investor here they are blown away by this city. I knew that if I could get Marc here that I could convince him to open a club in Buffalo... or that I would at least have a good shot."

If Kristen could convince Helium to open in Buffalo, that would put this city on the comedy map overnight. It just so happened that while the club owners were scoping out Buffalo, Morrissey's (Cobblestone District) went on the market. But Morrissey's wasn't big enough. "That's when we discovered that Benchwarmers was also for grabs," Kristen said. "If we combined the two, there would be room for a 260 seat showroom and a nightclub with a 100 seat bar and grill. When Marc got back to Philadelphia he began discussions with the developer (Savarino). It didn't take long to seal the deal, and Buffalo is now going to be the third city, after Philadelphia and Portland, to land a Helium Comedy Club (scheduled to open late fall to early winter). This club will bring in the top acts from around the country and will become a destination for comedy lovers from around the region. As for the investment, we're looking at half a million dollars on the low end, and the creation of 25-30 jobs. It's funny to think about, but Marc told me that Buffalo went from not being on his radar to Buffalo as the "No Brainer". He looked at the demographics (1,000,000 people to pull from) and realized that there was no full time comedy club in the area. Now he wants to build an A+ club with the caliber to match that of a NYC sexy nightclub."

Not only will the addition of Helium be great for Buffalo's national ranking in the comedy circuit, it's going to give local comics a giant boost in the industry. "This is going to be key to keeping local comics in town. We'll be hiring MCs and feature acts from Buffalo. Those comics will have access to other clubs in the Helium family. They can also get picked up by feature acts traveling through Buffalo as openers. Those opportunities never existed before. At the same time, it is important for a traveling comic to have a recognized home club that he or she can brag about. A beginner comic can start off as an MC and work his or her way to being a feature act. The local comics will be able to learn a lot from the national acts. Helium has a stellar reputation among comedians. The quality of the stage, the sound and the lighting is top of the line. Marc is only planning to have five or six clubs in the country, and it won't be long before Helium is the number one club. With Morrissey's being converted to Helium, Benchwarmers will be transformed into a nightclub called Elements (with dining) - the two will be attached. That means that people will be able to eat dinner, catch a show and then grab a cocktail... all in the same building."

Kristen is excited to raise the bar when it comes to the comedy scene in Buffalo. She's going to be the General Manager of Helium, but in order to do that she had to give up her comedy gig at Nietzsche's in Allentown. "Actually, I am handing the reins over to another local comic who will continue the tradition at that club," she informed me. "Buffalo needs to have multiple venues of all caliber. Since 2006 I've managed to grow my stable of comics from 8 to 78. Now there is a waiting list to perform that is 2-3 weeks out... and it's growing quick. With this new outside investment coming to Buffalo, I finally feel that I have completed what I set out to do. Helium is a community oriented, non-chain, national comedy club that will help to change the face of the city. I look back to the year 2005 when I never intended on staying in Buffalo... it was at that time that I started to see that this place could use a little comedy. Buffalo is an opportunity waiting to happen. Now the scene is really about to take off and I'm proud to have had a part in the exciting process."

We needed a comedy club downtown for too long, this is great news!!!!!

Wasn't there a comedy club on Chippewa a few years back called Witz End? What happened to that place?

Witz End was run by someone who had never run a comedy club before..and that is what happened..

I think it's a great idea but not sure of the location - wouldn't this be ideal for the theater district? With all of the new buzzzzz of cars on main street, Dino BBQ , perfetto, and the new Chippewa area - this would make more sense for a comedy club to be in the theater district correct?
I can only hope that the Casino will help promote the comedy club, transport customers back and forth etc....... And would it be nice to cut that huge parking lot down the middle and add cobblestone replica buildings with residential ....,,,

I agree with your comment. I'm excited to see a new comedy club open downtown, but the theatre district would appear to be a better location. It's hard to envision the mixing of crowds between a Friday/Saturday Sabres game and a comedy club. I hope it does well!

Good for Kristen and her gumption--sounds like a perfect, destination-oriented addition to the District. A cool music venue, to complement, might be an added draw....

Very excited about this! I find myself getting a little overwhelmed with the options downtown lately. Do I head to Lagerhaus or Liberty Hound? Sabres game or Pearl Street to watch it? Kayaking? Children's Museum so I can play too some day soon? Comedy Club? Yes. Yes. Yes. All of them...yes!

I remember the comix cafe...truly one of my favorite places to go..I know they consistenly had trouble with their landlord (Benchmark development)..the plaza they were in was definately top 5 worst in wny at the time.

I HEARD..the owner closed up shop and opened a new club in Florida. It was a great loss..the shows were fantastic..food was good...hopefully this comes close to filling the void.

I love how cyclical this city is. I oncer heard a woman say "You can be anything you want to be, just think up a job and be it."

Apparently, Kristen Becker is a "general manager" now. Two weeks ago, she was a lunch waitress who got fired from SeaBar for calling in sick 1 hour before her shift started and then called the owner "unprofessional."

I've heard her comedy bit before and can recite the whole thing, because it never changes. Ice Ice Baby.

I give the club about 2 years. Becker will be firedin 6 weeks.

actually, I think she called in 4 hours before her shift. and was in another country. either way, if you want to fault her for supplementing her income by getting a job while she waited for this deal to happen. that is just sad. you should probably ask about that owner. I have witnessed her being demeaning to more than one person on that staff, while on the floor, in front of a full restaurant.. I'm surprised Becker could take it for as long as she did...

Yes, there's truth to it. I work right near there and this hag of a woman has waited on me, twice. Worst personality I have ever encountered in my life. I wonder how many employees she will allow to call off shifts on multiple occasions because they are drunk in Toronto?

Go back to making coffee in Allentown.

What ever happened with The Comedy Hall of Fame?

http://www.buffalonews.com/city/columns/donn-esmonde/article180406.ece

Donn Esmonde (2010)... I think the idea has a lot of potential —and no other city has staked a real claim. The current Comedy Hall of Fame is in oft-shifted, undersized quarters in Florida. It is, more or less, there for the taking.
Best of all, it fits the plan for Canal Side: attractions that not only draw people to the downtown waterfront, but prompt folks to hang around afterward and check out the district’s coming shops, bars and restaurants. In contrast, destination retailers with connected parking and an in-house restaurant (sound familiar?) are the civic equivalent of the Holding Center. They don’t want you to leave.

The Comedy Hall—housed in modest quarters near Tampa Bay, Fla.—still is looking for a place to call home and a way to grow.
“In the right building, with access for buses and crowds, and a good city to work with, we could conservatively bring in more than 450,000 [visitors]a year,” Belmont said. “I liked Buffalo. . . . I would give any offer from the city serious consideration.”
Esmonde (2010)... The attraction is there for the asking. And we won’t have to wait nine years for an answer.

Thanks Kristen!

Now, for the rest of us, just for sh!ts and giggles, compare ourselves with what she's done...

Average God-Hates-Buffalo Joe: "Buffalo sucks, we never get anything done. We can't attract any major national retailers because we suck and nothing here will ever get any better. We tried that once and did a half-assed job of it and look where it got us."

Result: We suck and nothing ever gets done, nothing ever gets any better

Kristen: "Hey world, guess what? Buffalo rocks! We know that most of you don't think much of us, but that's because you never really took the time to get to know us. We're not only better than you think, we're AMAZING and you just don't know it yet!"

Outside investor: "I highly doubt anything you say, but if you -a mere .000001% of the market you speak for- are *THAT* enthusiastic about the place, we've got an extra couple bucks in our pocket to spend to visit you and laugh about it afterwards."

Afterwards: "Shit. She was right. How did we not know about this? *money signs in eyeballs* Let's go for it!"

Result: We rock -at least a little bit- and things get done, things get a little better

Thanks, Kristen. You rock. You just made Buffalo a little better. Please pull out your butter knife and spread yourself around!!

My family duties remain elsewhere for the moment, Rachacha, but my heart has never left. I'm sill just a neighbor working from abroad as best as I can.

Krsiten did some awesome work here. Not to discount her efforts, but all it took was a faithful heart and some conviction behind her voice.

There's only, what, a million and some of us? Half a million willing to raise our voices because we love where we live? A quarter million willing to tell someone else that we're worth a second look? Seventy thousand people to say, hey, c'mon and laugh with us but we are so much MORE than just the joke you thought we were.

ONE person loved herself and her city and had faith in all of us. Even had an awesome sense of humor about it all. She did good for herself and she helped a couple dozen people in the process. That is the power times a thousand that we hold.

It doesn't take ten million of us. But it does take more than one. We are a city that stands in awe of the great acts of heart and courage that keep us together. Oh what a sight when we all put a little of ourselves together.

Thank you, Kristen. Thank you, Marc.
I'm gonna giggle now, and you had BETTER earn it!!!

With the right type of acts the place might have appeal much greater than the 1 million Buffalo-Niagara Metropolitan area, but also the million in Rochester, and the 5 million in Southern Ontario. Good marketing strategies would be needed to reach these markets. Realistically the place could be packed every night.

So Lagerhaus95 has seemed to find a grove from the get-go, and two other places on the block have been for sale from the day they opened. Hint; serve good and interesting food/drink, with a knowledable and sincere staff and stay open posted hours. If you go halfass then you get halfass results.

I agree with most of what you said, except that Morrissey's opened in April 2007 and Lagerhaus has been around for less than a year. Morrissey's seemed busy when they first opened too, like they had "found a groove". If Lagerhaus is still around in 4 or 5 more years, then I'd feel more confident that they're here for the long term.

I tried to support Morrissey's but they were open and closed on a whim, never maintained real hours it seemed and always had limited menu and staff. Lagerhaus while still young seems to putting forth a much stronger effort from the start, committed to not being just a hockey desination.

Oh, Kristen, one more thing (said the commenter in the rumpled trench coat)...

...perhaps you should start a "Kevin M. Dobson" club @ Helium -- for people who wouldn't necessarily make an evening at a comedy club their first choice, but want to support you if for no other reason than to doom that MFer to ever wander the streets of Lancaster muttering epithets of obsessive hating on your efforts. Eventually, he'll walk in front of the wrong pizza place and an SUV on a collision course will put him out of his misery.

For everyone else, here's the footnote for the Kevin M. Dobson reference:

I love Becker's passion and drive. We work together when she acts as a judge for us once a season at Nickel City Chef. I didn't know her at all before that, but in the four seasons we've worked together I've watched her rock the fledgling Buffalo comedy scene.

In the comments here, people keep noting that the club *could* work if she could get big name acts. Truth is, she has a proven record of that already and it's sort of sad to me that most of Buffalo doesn't know it. Judah Friedlander, Doug Stanhope, Maria Bamford, and many other well-known national acts have done shows here int he last 18-24 months solely because of Becker.

She is very well-connected with others in her profession and uses her networks to her advantage, as any good independent artist would. The great thing about it, is that instead of seeking national stardom herself, she's decided to stay here and grow something for her community. I can't find fault in that.

Also regarding previous comments, I would have hoped that readers here would have already realized that the club would obviously book big acts on non-game nights and cater to sports fans on game nights. This could actually fill the club's calendar in a much smarter and more balanced way than previous tenants of the space. Lord knows it won't be hard to make the food better.

Congrats to Kristen, and all of the talented local comics she's groomed. They will finally have a space worthy of their talent and attractive enough to pull in the audience they and their national-level cohorts require. What a boon for the Cobblestone district!
