Erie Basin Marina observation boardwalk takes shape

Erie Basin Marina observation boardwalk takes shape
If you were under the impression that the new observation boardwalk at the Erie Basin marina was going to be a bunch of wooden planks set atop the existing stone wall, then you should see what is being constructed at this very moment (see back story). The boardwalk is actually made up of stamped concrete with sturdy metal railings. There is a nice-sized observation area with wheelchair access, which is also great for cyclists who would like to keep their bikes with them while taking a look out onto the lake.

For those who like to 'rough it', there is still an accessible stone area (see below) in front of the platform to hang out on. As far as I can see, that access will remain, which is nice for some people who want to walk right out onto the point, unencumbered by railings. I can see the observation boardwalk getting some heavy traffic, because it's safe, simple to get to and offers some excellent views out onto the water.

Now if we could figure out how to get some food out there... there isperfect spot for a clam bar. Also, how hard would it really be to extend Emerald Beach

I was hoping that this would look more like a pier. I can't believe we're right on the water and we have no pier to speak of (fail).

just off the shore here is the shipping channel. A navigable waterway maintained by the Army Corps. Very deep and functional. Probably the reason there isn't a pier here.

Im not talking a 50 foot pier, id be good with something 10-15 fee off the shore.

As a paddler I wouldn't mind something extending the Marina channel a little so kayaks crossing and power boats going at Lake speeds don't run into each other. There is a nice launch on the Lasalle Park side but crossing the mouth of the Erie Basin Marina is hazardous.

There are a few piers in the area. Bird Island is a big one, along with the one at Gallagher Beach. The Erie Basin isn't called a pier but it has functioned as such since the city used fill to connect the breakwall with the shoreline.

Well, I don't know where bird island is (maybe next to Sparrow Landing, or Hippo Point?) but the pier on Gallagher Beach isn't on the lake and classifying the Inner Harbor as a pier, is off point.

Let's see how long it takes for the tagging to appear.

its great that it is more accessible for wheelchairs but was all this really necessary? I think it diminishes the experience of being out at the point or at least it could have been designed with a much lighter hand...but i haven't seen in person.

and what about a place to sit? They should have eliminated the railing facing the water and built 3 over-sized stone steps wrapping the overlook to sit on and look outward to the water from.

I agree 100% - seems overbearing. Are all these railings really necessary?

Why didnt they extend the observation deck all they way to the edge? What is the rocky ledge supposed to be used for?

This seems like engineering overkill. That concrete walkway is actually raised a couple feet above the top of the rocks. The concrete, support structure, and double railings block the view of the harbor from the landscaped roundabout (although I'm sure the view on top of the walkway is nice... kind of like the skyway).

IMO - all that was really needed was repairs to the underlying support rocks and a flat boardwalk. BTW - the crumbling rocks on the water side have not been repaired (yet). But maybe the city had reasons for all this...

the railing gives a better experience. more of an amusement that complements the waterfront and able to suggest an attraction. The hail of mary path could use some rocks cape design to make it more inviting.

They will come...Create a website. Sponsored by the albright knox art gallery, the Sabres and Bills. They can create an attraction at the Erie Basin Marina with talented sculpture of talented athletes. We really are a sports city. The sculptures can be lit up at night.

Id rather have the old Front Street boardwalk rebuilt

This just looks over engineered and hickish

Totally overdone. I really liked the unfinished feel this point had. You could sit right at the edge of the rocks over the water. Now it's set back and disconnected from the water. That's what happens when you just have an engineer design something like this.

I hate to agree with people. It's nice and well done and all. But it looks like a podium for political speeches. You can go up, stand around, and leave. Seem like a lot of concrete for no real purpose... unless you travel by skateboard. Those kids love a good ramp.

I actually like the idea of a grand observation deck, but I do not understand why there is still rock extruding beyond the concrete. The whole area should have been covered in cement. Also why is there no refurbishing being done to the Observation Deck? The concrete is ugly and there is potential for maybe a Tim Horton's or something to go in on the bottom floor. Something needs to be done to the Observation Tower. I think it should be re-finished with glass or mirrors and that way the water and sun reflects off of it and the building has a regal look.

Now when will the Observation Tower be refurbished? I think now would be the perfect time.

surprised they didn't put an elevated pathway with a ramp on the boulders. Don't the disadvantaged want to hop across the giant stones like everyone else?

Only surprise is that the area wasnt extended to the rock edge. Surprised the monument out there wasnt included in the area but is left on the other side of the railings with a bunch of open rock space now inaccessible?

Yep. Engineering. No design. I don't even think Robert Moses would have allowed this at a Long Island beach.
