Ryan to ABC: Be a better Ambassador

Ryan to ABC: Be a better Ambassador
For a couple years now my friend Scott O'Connor and I have been beating the drum to try to get a disc golf course established in the city. As the popularity of the sport continues to grow throughout the country and outlying areas of Greater Buffalo, the need for an urban course has actually begun to gain some traction as of late.

One of the sites that we originally looked at a couple years back was the former Tee to Green at Amherst Street and Tonawanda - a sprawling property that was purchased (see history) by the Ambassador Bridge Company (ABC) after the guy behind the Tee to Green business bamboozled his investors and was caught in the act. For years now, ever since ABC purchased the property at a fire sale, the land has been nothing but a dumping ground and an eyesore. Considering that the site is bordered by Scajaquada Creek, there is no reason that an out-of-state property holder with deep pockets should not be held responsible for the condition of the land.

Recently, Scott and I sat down with Assemblyman Sean Ryan to discuss the potential of the property, and brought to his attention the short term possibility of using the land for a disc golf course (until either the ABC makes use of it or a greater use is identified by another party). There is no reason that the fallow land should not be improved upon immediately. A disc golf course would be the perfect low lift project that would utilize many of the former golf course configurations. By bringing disc golfers onto the property, the abandoned parcel would come back to life in variety of ways - as a natural landscape, a disc golf course and possibly even a sculpture park. Not only has the land been partially reclaimed by nature (there are now beautiful meadows populated by songbirds), there are a number of stakeholders that we have identified that we believe would be interested in helping to implement the disc golf course concept.

This morning, Assemblyman Sean Ryan held a press conference where he called out to Dan Stamper, President of ABC, to help to find a solution to a problem that the company has been shoveling upon Buffalo for quite some time. Ryan stated that ABC has been a good neighbor back in Detroit, but conversely has done nothing to better the city of Buffalo since it acquired the property. Ryan pointed out the great potential of the site, and the relatively low lift of developing the land for recreational use. He also stated that for years out-of-state property owners have been speculating on city properties, and that practice needs to be addressed and stopped. At this point, the ball is in ABC's court, and now that Ryan has officially entered the game he will hopefully force the hand of ABC to make a move in some direction.

Has ABC ever declared an intent for the property? I know there was a plan for a border crossing, was this land part of that plan?

Yes, this parcel was part of their footprint. Ambassador pushed hard to build a trucks only bridge at Black Rock but neighborhood opposition was strong and their plan was not really viable.

Doesn't sound like this guy cares much about being scolded ...

Why not just use it until they make you stop? Seriously ...

AT HE VERY LEAST....maintain it!!
Grass is over 2 feet tall, some debris remains from various illegal dumpers...another eyesore the neighbors have to deal with.
Perhaps this is their version of "warehousing" property until needed!

No perhaps, that's exactly how it's done. Some pressure can be brought simply by asking the property owner to obey the law.

Recreational use sounds great-how will you insure it for that use-donations, user fees, seek grants, bake sales? First step would be showing the title holder you will protect it from liability.

Regardless, you're going to find bodies on that property.

Raise the taxes! Why is that so difficult

I will pay to play - great idea but is it big enough

This is an amazing piece of property -- in the (how many?) years since Tee To Green closed, pioneer plants have moved in and forest succession has begun in some areas. Great meadow habitat is established in other areas. It's an interesting place to walk around.

But about that: as I discovered today, there are ticks there. If you go to check out the property, be sure to take simple tick precautions before and after. Specifics? Just Google "tick precautions".

Got any good tick jokes? You know what to do: [REPLY]

http://www.ambassadorniagara.com/home.htl The website has not been updated sonce 2007, Ambassador continues to hold this parcel with no plan and no real chance of building a bridge. Just another absentee landlord neglecting their property.

Maybe tell ABC to buy Jim Kaine a lawn mower and a sickle and let him clean this overgrown lot that they're just squatting on up. These guys are as bad as the thruway guy who owns all the land in Niagara Falls

Nice to see Fausto have his debut TV appearance, on the YNN coverage of this:

Also, RaChaCha himself has a cameo appearance -- as the only one there with enough sense to have an umbrella ;-)

"ABC has been a good neighbor back in Detroit" ?!?!?! If you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you.
If you have the Ambassador Bridge people as neighbors, you don't need terrorists.
Don't hold your breath waiting for them to improve the Tee to Green property; just take a look at the Bridge Company-owned Michigan Central depot in Detroit. This dreary decrepit derelict will tell you all you need to know about the Ambassador Bridge Company as a neighbor.
BTW, did you know that residents of the area around the Ambassador Bridge have three times as much asthma as the national average? Could the exhaust from backed-up diesel trucks have anything to do with that? But the bridge company and its owners have spent millions of dollars in fighting the construction of a Downriver bridge that would divert truck traffic from heavy residential areas.
Did you know that the Bridge Company illegally took over and fenced off a city-owned park because they wanted the property to twin their bridge? They also illegally built an approach ramp over a city-owned street, preventing traffic on that part of the street. Why do you think bridge owner Matty Moroun and right-hand man Dan Stamper spent a night in jail? They were in contempt of court because they refused to obey the judge's order to follow rules and regulations in connection with their illegal construction.
Lots of luck in trying to get any cooperation from the Ambassador Bridge Company. We'll pray for you -- when we're not praying for the souls of Matty Moroun and Dan Stamper.

The Ambassador Group has a well earned reputation as dishonest, corrupt, and even criminal in their operations at Detroit. Forbes magazine did an article on their questionable business practices, threat to public safety, and threat to national security.
They hired James Keane as their front man here in Buffalo in their attempt to ram a trucks only bridge into Black Rock. They went so far as to send fraudulent "concerned citizens" to a public hearing on the Squaw Island project to advocate against the park which just happened to be located in the path of the bridge. As soon as Ambassadaor took ownership of the Tee to Green property the new clubhouse building mysteriously burned down. Several other arson fires followed, all in the immediate area of the bridge and plaza footprint.
The Ambassador property in Black Rock is a disgrace, there is no maintenance, no security, and no enforcement from the city. The Ambassador Bridge is no longer a viable project and the Ambassador Group is not a responsible property owner, time for them to get out of the way so this property can be developed.
