Rededication of the Church of Scientology

Leave a commentUggh - So much creepiness. Its hard for me to think about anything but that when It comes to Scientology. Nice building weirdos. The same goes for Tom Cruise. Nice face weirdo.
Eh, I can't support that organization in any way. They do much more harm than good.
I second zomg's comment, Scientology is possibly the greatest farce of them all, makes other religions look reasonable by comparison. I just can't take these people seriously, to do so would require a rejection of all logic, common sense, and rational thought.
That said they used their followers money to do a great job on the building.
Every scientologist I met was smart of well weird.
Oh sure there is something everyone can relate to with regards to our thoughts and behavior create the life we live in. Thats not really scientology or psychology...thats just common sense...cause and effect. But scientologist make it out to be some secret society that makes that any intrugue relating to the catholic church pale in comparison.
Id put the scientologists war and intrigue to silence their critics, preserve their religious tax exempt status and their cult luring of the rich and famous pale in comparison to Opus Dei, Leondardo DaVinci, the Knights Templars and the Merovingians. Only [deleted] could surpass scientologists with their intrigue relating to [deleted] and the [deleted] to deflect criticism, patriotism, politics and loyalty...or the zeal at which [deleted] chase after and marry the richest / most powerful of the [deleted]. [Deleted]...[Deleted]...both chased after married wealthy powerful politicians.
I feel like the only people that drank more bong water than you are the Scientologists.
religion aside... earlier this spring a friend and i were walking around downtown admiring buildings and as we came near the building someone ran out and offered to give us a tour. i thought for sure they were going to lock us up in the basement and force us to watch propaganda. however it was a really nice tour. they pointed out what they have done to restore the building and what their future plans were. it was nice before the renovation.
So who is the important guy, And Was Tom not there?
So did the mayor send a representative? Last time this happened, Mayor Masiello was there himself, reading a statement that was written for him by Tom Gleed. I understand that there was a lot of humor over this.
If they could produce their permit for canvassing neighborhoods around the city then I'll refrain from calling them crazy. But they can't because they run away when I ask them and they don't respond to my email requests.
Hell yes, the creepiest creeps ever, I [deleted]. I'm not trying to be funny, I really [deleted].
Look at the building in the rear...and to the left. If only this building and its facade could be expanded along Main Street.
Its one of my favorite buildings in Buffalo. Shamefully the Catholics didnt do it much benefit all the years they had it. Whats with the Catholics in Buffalo...they are letting all their churches get demolished and replaced with office cafeterias. Its like they have no sense of holy space or the sacred place anymore.
Scientology has been busy buying up real estate and trying to solidify them self as a serious religion for quite some time, so this is no surprise, and it looks great. Saying this particular brand of religion is crazy is fair, but just remember that they aren't strapping bombs to them self, or starting crusades, I just wish we could tax all religions.
LOL at all the haters surging with enough body thetans to fry an e-meter in seconds! Gorgeous holy consecrated temple to purity. L.Ron Hubbard is truly a magnificent God.
L. Ron Hubbard made a bar bet with (science fiction writer) Robert A. Heinlein that he could start a new religion for money, that could make $1 million. Looking around for a name that would give his cause credibility, Hubbard invented "Scientology".
The rest, unfortunately, is history.
Maybe they're a little creepy, maybe more so than any other religion, maybe not...
But the building looks great and they obviously have the support of their followers. Can we get somebody from the Bishop's office to take a couple notes? Both sides can get in a few giggles about what the other believes, and then they can both exchange some helpful tips to one another.
Good grief, man, look 'em up.
They're not just creepy, they're evil.
Can we stop treating them with the respect that any reasonable institution earns? The entire thing is a ridiculous inside joke that costs real money and real lives.
My point is, the same can be said of almost any religion. Almost any organization at all, actually. The people who belong to a group support it for personal reasons, while people who oppose it do so because they don't understand or simply because it's different from what they already believe.
I'm not saying Scientology doesn't have some disturbing qualities. But the same can be said for Christians, Jews, Muslims, Mormons, Buddhists... pedophilia scandals, Zionism, 9/11, polygamy, reincarnation... let those bad qualities fester in your mind and we end up with another holocaust, crusade, jihad or bamiyan.
The Catholic church is letting its buildings rot while Scientology has restored this gem. One church is feeding the homeless and fighting against women and gays while the other is making people feel better about themselves by bilking them out of their money.
There's definitely some room for improvement on all sides, and more than a few things that any group can learn to better this world if they take the time to understand other people's views.
If we can vilify the Bishop for tearing down another church while lamenting abused altar boys, then we can at least give the Scientologists credits for restoring this building even if they stole an old lady's retirement fund to do it.
It is a beautiful building, and the accompanying picture is great.
Lovely building. Now can they stop putting propaganda all over Buffalo? Serial Litterers!
It's interesting that the majority of you mock Scientology but most likely adhere to Christianity. Just imagine today if some shepherds started exclaiming to everyone that Christ was born down in Springville by a women who was a virgin, what would you say about them? People mock Scientology because their beliefs seem extreme and unbelievable, yet Christians are fine with adhering to a book written by over 40 people over the course of ~1800 years that implies we should stone our children when they are bad and kill off couples who commit adultery. People mock Scientology because it's known to be a religion with enormous wealth and grand buildings... but last I checked the Catholic Diocese as a whole is still quite wealthy and we try our best to save buildings the Catholic church abandoned.
For the record I in no way support Scientology, but perhaps people should look more closely at their own beliefs before judging others? Ya know, like that guy Luke said? Luke 6:37
"Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven;"
PS - Love the building!
Christianity can suck it too, they are not much better than Scientology. I guess you do have god on your side when your organization can molest thousands of boys and get away with it all while having their parents give you money
I've been saying this for years. "Scientology is stupid, but I belive in someone who died and then came back to life."
Christianity is [bleep] as well as every other religion IMO.
That much being said, Scientologists are [bleep]. Period. My 7 month old could invent a more believable story than the [bleep] those people spew about.
I agree with you but slightly in a different focus but utilizing the same language: I think atheists are a [bleep] [bleep].
well then, thank god i'm an atheist...
Not believing in religion does not mean you don't believe there is a God. You are, however, entitled to your opinion.
I guess you can make buildings pretty when you exploit people for their life savings, harass and intimidate people critical of you, and function as a criminal organization.
I hear the branch davidians are opening a new center in black rock, maybe you should feature that too.
I assume you are joking but we do have a Buddhist presence in Black Rock, good neighbors and welcome in our community.
I obviously am. I'd be happy to have Buddhists in my neighborhood
I liken Scientology to casino gambling. Both suck money out of the community and take it elsewhere, all for just some vague sense of good feeling. And these are not trivial amounts -- they can take all your life savings.
I applaud the fact they at least invested in the community with this building, which is more than I can say for the casinos, which put up ugly things. But frankly, our community doesn't need more bloodsucking.
rand>"suck money out of the community and take it elsewhere"
For one thing, regarding "take it elsewhere", aren't the Senecas who own the casinos here mainly residents of WNY and Upstate NY?
For another thing, do you also say that other forms of entertainment some WNYers voluntarily choose instead of casinos such as Regal theaters (hq-ed in Knoxville TN) are sucking money out of the community and taking it elsewhere?
How about other entertainment co's like Time Warner (hq in NYC), Dish Network (hq in Colorado), etc? How come it seems those who feed WNYers' additions to TV and pop culture are never to be said to be sucking money and taking it elsewhere, but yet that's said about the Senecas who mostly live around here?
When Dave Matthews, Lady Gaga, etc have shows in WNY with expensive tickets, are they or their out of town promoters said to "suck money out of the community and take it elsewhere"?
Nope, that seems never said about any of those. But yet it's often claimed our WNY neighbor Senecas. Nice. (& extra ironic when long distance expats bash the WNY resident Senecas like that, lol)
When you go to the cinema, the amount of money you give up is limited to a single ticket, plus perhaps something for popcorn. That's about $20.
Even it's Lady Gaga, the most you can spend is several hundred dollars. With all these, there is mostly an upper limit of what you can spend.
With casinos and Scientology, the whole point is to drain your bank account, and that has happened numerous times. Even most religions limit their take to 10%, although of course they will take more. But you can't say the entire business plan of the catholic church is to drain your accounts as much as possible.
That's the difference.
hmmm, I notice you silently dropped the b.s "out of the community and take it elsewhere" claim after I pointed out that (unlike for Regal, Time Warner, and the Scientologists), the Seneca owners mostly live in WNY and NYS.
Regarding people who gamble more than they want to, the question would what portion of the downtown casino's 750,000 annual visitors fall into that category compared to people who do it responsibly as their choice of entertainment.
For those who aren't addicted but prefer to spend $ at a casino instead of entertainment alternatives like movies, cable TV, concerts, etc - I don't see how it's any worse for how much $ stays in the area or leaves - a.k.a. "is sucked out".
In many cases, more of the $ probably stays here longer if spent in a Seneca casino.
As for the truly addicted, how many of them wouldn't just gamble anyway using other options like the internet or casinos elsewhere, etc….
Incidentally, it seems that 750,000 has been growing…

"Ft. Erie closing ups visitors to Buffalo casino
by James Fink, Buffalo Business First Reporter Friday, June 8, 2012
In the past month, the number of patrons visiting the downtown Seneca Buffalo Creek Casino has increased and officials of Seneca Gaming Corp. think they know why.
The April 30 closing of the slot-machine operations at Fort Erie Race Track is bringing more people through the doors. Jim Wise, Seneca Gaming senior vice president, said the number of visits rose “by the high single digits” in the last month. “It’s probably somewhere in the 8 percent or 9 percent range,” he said. “But it’s probably more than just Fort Erie closing. There’s more than likely a number of reasons.” …"
And that's even just with the temporary small casino.
I worked in the same office with a self-proclaimed atheist/lesbian and, with all due respect to the latter, I inquired if she meant “agnostic” in which she replied “what’s that” in her best RIT graduate vernacular and I ventured to explain that an agnostic questioned the existence of God.
She then asked if that was my status and I honestly said: “No, I have a spiritual belief” which was received with a shadow crossing over her face and from that point onward treated me like I was mentally challenged.
This was also the same person who referred to stained glass windows as “pictures with dead people on them”….
The woman is a moron with a bachelors degree so I am more apt to question higher education than I am selecting ones belief or, in this case, religion.
Incidentally, there is a huge difference between “religion” and belief….
Also, I give scientology credit for renovating this building which is more than I can say for the Diocese of Buffalo who has created more urban decay than any other non-manufacturing entity in Buffalo.
Sometimes I wonder which is worse, people spewing their own beliefs without taking the time to understand them... or people knocking down other people's beliefs without taking the time to understand where the other person is coming from.
I think the only difference between a belief, a religion and a cult is the amount of effort one puts into understanding what it is that they're talking about.
Haha. 2006 audience laughs with you!
It just shows how fake they are, Quebec turned their collective backs on religion like 35 years ago.
The building is a shining star enlivening the block. Applause, applause for the superb job!
Additionally, kudos for their insistence and thrust in rejecting the demolition of the previously crumbling buildings which are now the beautifully revived Granite Works complex.
I don't understand all of the negativity here. The article mentions a beautifully restored building, tourists investing in the local economy, and people pursuing happiness as they see fit. What's not to like about all of that?
Look up comments of people who were lured into Scientology then were fortunate enough to escape. It's scary. The German government (and others I'm sure) even refuses to recognize it as a church.
I for one, paid a price. Every time I have a negative thought I have to do 3 hours in the sauna. my skin is sliding off my body as I type this...

Sometimes I wonder if Scientology is just an elaborate hoax to add credibility to other religions. Side by side with Scientology, no other major religion's back story sounds quite as far fetched.
Far fetched? You mean Xenu didn't come back from the Galactic Confederacy? Damn.
