Globe Market To Go Opens on Hertel

Globe Market To Go Opens on Hertel
This past week Globe Market To Go officially opened its doors on Hertel Avenue. Unlike Globe on Elmwood or Downtown, the Hertel location is set up so that customers must walk through Hertel News to get inside. At first I wasn't so sure if this was the best idea, but now that I have checked out the operation, I like the way that customers are led past the offerings of one business to get to the next. It's a built-in convenience that should come in handy for people who are on the go and are looking for the almighty one-stop-shop.

Once inside Globe, customers are greeted with a comforting and familiar globe style that consists of a visual treat of food offerings displayed in a glass case towards the back of the business (near the entranceway), before settling down to an attractive seating area in the front. This Globe operation is the perfect addition to Hertel, mainly because the eatery offers a variety of delicious edibles in a market-style setting. Where as Spot Coffee offers the cafe-vibe, Globe provides a place that is a bit more deli-oriented.

I've always liked Globe Markets' offerings. In fact, this past Saturday I stopped into the Elmwood location (since I was running The Peddler just down the way) for a caprese sandwich and was completely satisfied with my food. The portions are fairly large and the ingredients are always fresh. I always like to watch the activity at all three locations. Between the lively interaction of the professionals working the counter, or the unique customer make-up at each of the different locations, there's something about Globe that makes me feel like I was treated to something special.

Globe is also beneficial to those who are looking to pick up some prepared food for the family after work. The breads are baked daily, which is why everything tastes so fresh. They now offer gluten free bread as well. There are wraps and soups and salads, and there's even a small kids' menu for added convenience. Globe also serves up a BLT, BBQ pulled pork, red hot burrito, Cuban Reuben, chicken quesadilla, grilled brie and apple... though my favorite is always the caprese sandwich.

Since Globe has opened on Elmwood, it has helped to change the face of the street. It has also brought an eatery to downtown Buffalo that offers office workers a quick and fresh alternative to the ever-present hotdog stand. Now Globe is helping to add to the Hertel renaissance that we have been witnessing in recent years. North Buffalo is lucky to have such a quality amenity to frequent. There are so many culinary offerings in this thriving commercial district, and great shopping choices to boot... it appears that the trend of opening a business on Hertel is nowhere near slowing down. With each new opening, the street becomes that much more desirable for others to follow suit.

What a great reincarnation of this space. Does Hertel News
have new ownership? I have fond memories of buying the Sunday
New York Times there when I lived in N Buff. The couple who ran it were always very nice.

Nice to see Hertel moving in this direction. This section, in particular (between Sterling and Colvin) has become so attractive over the past ten years. Plus the surrounding real estate is half the price of Elmwood Village.

It's also closer to the park, closer to the zoo, closer to the NF Boulevard shopping area if you need access to it, there is little spill-over vandalism or nuisance crime, and (perhaps best of all) there are very few hipsters and almost no attitude. I think this part of town is eclipsed only by Parkside in terms of all-around attractiveness.

If you have kids and hate parking on the street, you'd better start buying in this area before it's too late.

You nailed it, I hate to use the word but it is much more authentic than the EV, for real.

Hey Mary Kunz Goldman, is that you? And your Hertel inferiority complex?

I agree with all of your points, but Hertel has a couple of things working against it. (I live in the Hertel - Colvin area now):

--The public transportation around here is very weak. And it's as difficult to park around here on weekend evenings as it is on Elmwood.

--There are very few options for schools in this area. Much of the Elmwood village (and the richer areas of North Buffalo) is in the so-called Olmsted district which makes it more attractive to young families. Other than Holy Angels there are few private school options in North Buffalo. Especially since St. Margarets is closing. The EV has the Seminary, Nardin, Canisius, etc. And for daycare there is the JCC and Westminster.

--The zoo is nice but most of the culturals (both the big institutions and smaller series such as the concerts on Bidwell and Shakespeare in the Park) are in the EV.

--Also, Hertel is a pain for pedestrians to cross. Traffic lights are far apart and it's a wider street which makes it very dangerous to jaywalk.

--There are Hipsters here and their population is growing. And the house prices are hardly rising. If anything they've gone down from a few years ago.

I live half a block away from the new Globe and am very excited to welcome them to North Park. Being an EV transplant, I've dug Globe for a long time.

I am not crazy about walking thru the news store to get in but it's not that big a deal. Just kinda weird.

When they named it Globe to go I thought it was going to be take-out only. Very excited to see the tables and the place looks great!

I don't know where else to post this, since you mention it only parenthetically here but regarding the peddler: I hope you can do something about the outrageous prices asked by most of the vendors. Yes, there are some nice items but even the nicest are way overpriced and the rest look like estate sale leftovers marked up 1000%.

Globe Market should also reevaluate their prices. They price items like this is San Francisco and not Buffalo.

Their prices are so high that they keep getting more and more business which is forcing them to expand and create new locations. Are you for real?

STEEL- you've probably never even eaten at globe. go post on chicago rising and leave the rest of us alone.

You say their prices are too high yet their expansion says otherwise. What is your problem?

I think their prices are fine. There is a big difference when you get brie on a fresh cut baguette than a slice of regular cheddar on white bread. For the quality you are getting at globe, their prices seem to be reasonable. If the prices were to come down, you definitely would not be getting those same ingredients. Go to Panera - same prices as globe, definitely not as good quality.

I actually think Globe's prices are fine but their food is generally bland. It is a great place to go to get ideas for dinner and weekend meals, but when you purchase some food item from the display array it generally lacks flavor. It always sounds so good. With that said, it is great that they came to Hertel and I wish them much success.

I fully agree. I've eatin there twice and both times I though my sand"wish" was going to be really good and both times they were incredibly bland.

I stopped in and spoke with one of the owners over the weekend and am so pleased to welcome Globe to the neighborhood. In addition to their creations, I am so pleased that they will be selling fine cheeses, fresh bread AND select produce as well. This neighborhood just keeps getting better and better!

This makes me so happy! (and full!)

We have lived off of Hertel for six years and have noticed a dramatic increase in foot traffic, as one of our hobbies is to people watch from aour second floor porch. We still have the dog walkers but they are joined now by yuppies & dinks, hipsters, parents peddling a fleet of strollers, kids, and now recently and most suprisingly to us baby boomers...

It is so refreshing to WALK to a resturant, or to the movie theater, or bank, or rent a movie, or get a pizza, or shop for furniture, or antiques, or go to the gym, or the dentist, or the tailor, or to church...and I think more and more people are starving to have access to a walkable community of that which Hertel offers! Buy-in now why prices are still relatively affordable.
