BYP Monthly Happy at Scharf's Schiller Park Restaurant this Thursday

BYP Monthly Happy at Scharf’s Schiller Park Restaurant this Thursday
Join Buffalo's Young Preservationists at Scharf's Schiller Park Restaurant this Thursday, July 19th beginning at 6:30 pm, as we host our monthly happy hour at this long time landmark. The restaurant has long been a treasure of the east side, offering authentic German food. Unfortunately,
Scharf's has fallen on hard times and may be closing by the end of July.

The restaurant has been in business since 1967 and is a true Buffalo gem. BYP was so sad to hear it was closing, we had to have an event to say goodbye. Be sure to bring cash for the incredible food offerings and great drinks. BYP will be discussing upcoming preservation issues and events such as, City of Night, Peace Bridge, Saving Scharf's, the National Trust Conference in Spokane, the future of the Broadway Market and more.

Scharf's is located at 34 South Crossman Street in the Schiller Park neighborhood, it is the last building at the end of the street before the start of the Park itself. Check out the BYP Facebook page for more of our events, information and current preservation battles. Be sure to RSVP for the Happy Hour on the BYP Facebook event page.

When preservationists time travel, we usually go back - not into the future to post a picture of 30 awesome people in front of Scharf's but you better believe that will be the lead-in image to our next event!

More over, the Library and Scarf's are three miles apart are both on the East Side and are both awesomely "unknown." Not sure why a geography comment was even necessary when you've got 30 smart/active/hard-working young professionals showing up somewhere, discussing series preservation/revitalization work, that's a good thing (anywhere).

Have fun, BYP!

Scharf's is something that BYP has been talking about for a while now. However, considering that it is closing in less than two weeks, we (BYP) wanted to get in there before it was gone forever. We hope to see you there!

Sadly, there is a great deal of truth to what you state but there is a genre of us who frequent places like Scharfs.

Unfortunately, my periodical visits certainly did not help keep this establishment open compounded by the fact that I know people who are paralyzed with fear at the mention of venturing into Buffalo much less east Buffalo!

Sheldon, I though I saw you at Lloyd's scarfing down some tacos today and french kissing Gary Busey. It was pretty damn hot; I got a huge boner from it and I'm not even gay, not that there is anything wrong with that.

@Up and coming

What's with the apostrophe fetish? You're not even consistent. You should have said robbery's instead of robberies. Why screw up a perfect streak of only getting it right once?

The German-American neighborhood restaurant - the last of a kind. Troidl's, Wurzburger Hof, and many more once dotted Schiller Park and Kensington. We should all pour a little bit of Spaten on the ground to honor them.

Like I said in an earlier post, even if the restaurant at its current location isn't viable, it should be given a chance somewhere else, if the owner desires. Their customer base is largely "old Buffalo" and suburban, but they're also from a generation that held a belief that the move of any restaurant made the food's quality worse. Many "institutions" that moved to the 'burbs in response to neighborhood changes didn't last more than a year or two at their new location. "It's just not the same!"

A move to a location in a prosperous city location, where Scharf's can pick up a new customer base, could be a viable option. Thing is, despite having unique, high quality food, Scharf's has a 1970s corner tavern character that may not resonate with hipper Allentown, EV, and North Buffalo residents. Although it might work in Cheektowaga or Depew, it takes more than generic tables, vinyl tablecloths, and stacking chairs to create a new "third place" that would make a new generation of city residents regulars.

hear, hear. we have lots of vacant buildings. maybe they'd enjoy a renaissance in a new location.

Id like to see them also tackle a big preservation project like what demolished building downtown most deserves to come back....what has the greatest need to come back.

The one thing that comes to my mind is the County Library.

With ECC having nursing and medical and dental courses...Life Sciences Campus a few blocks away....IT JUST MAKES SENSE TO HAVE A MEDICAL LIBRARY downtown with lots and lots of small study cubicles and conference rooms.

Study cubicles arent just for students but they also make the city valuable for the mobile office professionals that need a virtual office for a few hours.

Library cubicles as a preservation issue!? Sure.

We've taken on Trico (http://savetrico.wordpress.com/), that would be a great place for a medical library! And many of our members are hugely active in the fight to get the ECC medical campus downtown (http://youngcitizensforecc.blogspot.com/).

Personally, I don't think any demolished building needs to come back, ever. What lesson is learned then!?

which has what, exactly, to do with the impending loss of scharf's? are you suggesting that it is the proprietor's job to not only rescue his restaurant but rebuild the old public library?

I think it would be more appropriate if Scharf's had to rebuild the German-American Bank building. "That saving your business we did comes at a price. MWAHHAHAHAHA! Go start mining some Medina Sandstone!"

As I commented on Newell's recent Scharf's article:

I think the ground floor of the great building that's being rehabbed at the corner of Breckenridge & Niagara would be a great location for Sharf's to relocate. Forgive me in advance for pointing out that the corner lot opposite is empty, so there would be ample parking. Bill Breeser is rehabbing that building, and the caveat is I don't know if he already has a tenant for the first floor. But it wouldn't hurt for someone to inquire...

That would put, in the space of a few blocks on Niagara: one of Buffalo's favorite Italian restaurants (Santasiero's), German restaurants (Sharf's), and two other great eating spots (Boomerang's and Marco's). Would be a great thing for an up-and-coming part of Niagara Street!

"Forgive me in advance for pointing out that the corner lot opposite is empty, so there would be ample parking."

Rach, forgive me if I overlook possible satire in your apology request... but if it's even partly serious, I'd ask why should anyone need forgiveness for pointing out a positive about the location you suggested?

When I mentioned the parking lot convenience at BR Kitchen & Bar, nobody complained. Maybe tide is turning when places like that business and the new hardware store at Main-Summer, and the Larkinville complex, and the planned Dino BBQ aren't criticized for having parking spaces.

About your suggestion -
I agree that's one of many good possible locations if it's available and Scharf's decides to reopen. Another plus is Niagara St's closeness to the Peace Bridge might help attract some fans of German food from nearby Ontario. Also, Cheektowaga and W Seneca folks would have convenient access using the 190. Someone should pass along your idea to them.

I saw the earlier comment you made about the Black Rock Kitchen and thought you were joking. If others made the same mistake that may be a better explanation for the lack of a response than a turning tide on parking.

The business-parking examples you listed are very different than the type of parking usually complained about on this site. I wouldn't expect someone who raises issues about auto-dominated developments (plazas, pharmacies, big boxes etc) to also complain about the smaller, and/or mixed use, and higher density developments you mentioned simply because of the presence of parking. Apples and oranges.

You cant just throw the problems of the east side as negative PR. There are very real SIGNIFICANT issues on the east side that have been going on for decades now that should not and cannot simply be brushed off or dismissed that way. To do so is irrational. It doesnt matter whether its all that happens or not. The fact is that it does happen and it happens waaaaayyyy too frequently. Persistent violence is no way to build a strong neighborhood and reverse the negative image.
