Urban Threads is 'Open'

Urban Threads is ‘Open’
Now here's something that you don't see everyday - a local clothing retailer cross-dressing its mannequins in the display window. While the display is very clever and sends a message that the store is 'open' and supports this weekend's Pride activities, there is an even more subtle component of the display that a lot more stores in the area share, and that's the 'Open' sign. The 'Open' sign at Urban Threads might not have been intended to amplify the cross dressing theme, but it certainly did. And after the display comes down, the message that Urban is 'open' to gay rights will remain.

I appreciate the support, but cross dressing as a metaphor for being pro-gay seems medieval.

It's only offensive if Anderson Cooper giggles at it.

Want to attract more customers? Tell the old guy in the store to stop pouncing on customers the minute they walk in the door. Its like being in a furniture store, except with pants.

So they are under assumption that gay men cross dress? Thats rather offensive and actually small minded in thought.

No, they're not under the assumption that all gay men cross dress. They may be under the assumption that SOME gay men do. And they're right. Ever been to a gay bar? Drag queens are part of the gay community, and there's nothing offensive about that. Lots of gay men wear make-up, and certainly more gay men do than straight men. I can't speak for all gay men, but the majority of the ones I've known are not afraid to acknowledge, even embrace, their feminine side. They're not so hung up on being macho all the time. This was a fun window display, and meant as a show of support for the gay community. Lighten up, will you? Not everything has to be taken so seriously, and people need to stop being so hyper sensitive and easly offended.

Your response is an attack and it offends me.

So because some veterans cross dress, we should expect to see this sort of display on Veterans Day too? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Maybe if they'd done up the mannequins as drag queens it'd be different, but clearly that's not what was intended here. Its perpetuating a stereotype, pure and simple.

Nobody is going crazy over it, and as EricOak said, thanks for the support. Kinda.

I bet you're fun at parties. Like I said, some people need to lighten up and just laugh at some things instead of taking everything so serious. OMFG
