Live at Larkin

Live at Larkin
In the past I've been to a ton of openings - homes, shops, restaurants, etc. While I tend to get around and see a lot of things, I've never seen anything like what I saw last evening. An opening of an entire city district. The Larkin District is a sight/site to behold. It's as if, almost overnight, this part of town sprung up from nowhere. But that's not the case. The Larkin District is steeped in history, and while the ghosts of the past have reawakened, there is also a brand new energy that is being infused in order to create a place that has as storied of a future as its illustrious past.

In order to say thanks to all those who made the recreation of the Larkin District possible, including many neighbors and those who work in Larkinville, it was decided to host a kickoff celebration. Part party, part concert and part festival, last evening gave the district its first glimpse as to what the site was capable of, and how visitors would react to the amenities. The square's central grill station (and bar) was activated, oversized pillows were placed about, food trucks were brought in, the Larkin Filling Station's garage doors were rolled up and a stage was set up (featuring headliners 10,000 Maniacs).

Finally, the last magical ingredient was added - the people, which instantly turned Larkin Square into a lively and festive town square. "Larkinville was the original neighborhood of innovation and industry in Buffalo", said Larkin Development Principal Howard Zemsky. "We have been committed here from Day One to the creation of a vibrant mixed use historic district. Through our relationship with First Niagara Bank, and our many tenants who share a common vision, we've been able to re-imagine this district as a vibrant hub of energy and commerce."

While you may be thinking to yourself, "That looks like a lot of fun... I wish I could have been there," I have some good news to share. Every Wednesday, throughout the summer and into the fall, Larkinville will be promoting a music series called Live at Larkin. That's when the corner of Seneca and Swan Streets in Buffalo will play host to the city's most talented performers, while Buffalonians roam the grounds in search of good food, frosty brews and even a few fun games such as pickleball.

While all of the sensational activities are a welcome addition to the district, I'm just as impressed with the subtle details that tie everything together - attractive garbage cans... large rocks for sitting... LED lighting... bike racks... lounge chairs and oversized community tables... right down to the people who walk around tidying up after the crowd. It all makes a big difference.

Down the road there will also be wandering performers and buskers, which is great because in other parts of the city these creative elements are usually frowned upon. If you think about it, this is a district that goes against the grain of status quo in so many ways. All of the things that we have been asking for - fair playing fields, inclusivity, creativity - it's all here. And it just goes to show you that this is not rocket science after all. Projects like this are driven by passion, not politics. Larkinville is a pleasant place to be - there are a lot of other parts of the city that could learn a thing or two from the visionaries behind the project. Hopefully Live at Larkin will ultimately take on a double meaning. Now... let the games begin!

Looks great. And I LOVE 10,000 Maniacs, especially Mary Ramsey.

This event was SO MUCH FUN!
Great to see all of the development and the people down there. Lets hope that all of this excitement gets more people to live in this area!

This gives Buffalo a long forgotten historical district.

No one ever thought this would happen. This entire district was slated for demolition and most of it was demolished.

Now what we need to hope for is the reconstruction of period buildings from pre-depression...for the most part the developers do want to build period buildings that blend rather than mixing in contemporary and modern.

There was even some talk about building Frank Lloyd Wright rowhouses that were never built. I that that would be a great addition for Buffalo.

Of course I think one of the BIGGEST things Buffalo could do is extend the Light Rail to the Larkin District and Central Terminal! Why wouldnt we want to connect this growing business district to downtown.

Absolutely tremendous event last night! I heard so many people say what an incredible environment they created down there. First class all the way! And yes, the 10,000 Maniacs were great last night. Like the Larkin District, they too are a WNY treasure.

It was amazing to see all the people there and it didn't feel crowded compared to other events. Easy access to beer and food with plenty of good views for the music. Very well done, I'll diffidently be back for another session.

Take notes Canal Side...

Larkin Square would be a great place for a Saturday public market.

Oh, I know about the artisan market @ canal side.
I was thinking of a farmers market, like the one in Rochester.

Thank you Buffalo Rising for being there to cover an event I regret having missed.

The music lineup at Larkin Square is admirable and enticing. Not even one of those forgettable clone bands that are so pervasive and perverse at, for instance, the Wednesday night concerts at the Gateway Park alongside the canal in N. Tonawanda.

Awesome event! Had a blast, everything looks great. Very impressed with how nice the neighborhood looks, think I'm going to start looking for next apt in the area, prices seem to be pretty decent right now.

I don't want to be the person to complain but how come all the live local music series seem to exclude the local EDM scene. I think it'd be pretty chill to have a couple local trip-hop and dub DJs down there, it'd make a for a fun atmosphere and a change from the typical indie-alterna/folk we seem to see all over the city.

The 10,000 Maniacs put on a fantastic show. Hope to see them in Buffalo somewhere again soon.

To gearbm95- Not everyone agrees that djs and mcs and the whole prerecorded music playback scene is in the same category as live musicians who could actually perform without electricity if needed.

Some of us think djs and the like hide behind (usually) over-amplification. How an you think djs are part of the live music scene. They are not- by definition.

Kudos to the Larkin Square programmers for knowing the difference, too.

I completely respect your opinion, even though I feel it is ignorant. Stop by DBGB's on Allen St. some night and check out all of the talented EDM artists located in Buffalo that do everything from breaks, to dumbsteo, to trance.

It takes quite a bit of talent to get up there and mix on the fly; I don't know if you were mistaken by my earlier comment but I wasn't referring to DJs who simple hit shuffle on their iPod or throw a couple CDs in. If you're looking for some national examples take SBTRKT, Grimes, Pretty Lights, or Flying Lotus as exmaples and check them out!

now can someone actually REBUILD the Larkin Building!?

I can't believe they tore that thing down....to make way for a truck stop that was never even built.

Loving the progress down there!

I just have to say that I can't believe people are actually talking about moving TO the Larkin District not FROM it.

Great news all around quite possibly the most inspiring development yet. I don't think anyone thought Larkin could ever be this nice. I know neighborhoods change and gentrify but Larkin was one that was never on anyone's radar (like the blocks west of Richmond).

Let's be honest though, we can't say determination was what really caused all of this; it was First Niagara's capital that was the catalyst here.

I'm sad I missed it but I'll plan to be there next Wednesday. I work for Kaleida Health and often go to the 'Larkin' building where Kaleida occupies two floors.

First Niagara gave Larkin a lift, but the vision and quality work comes from Zemsky and Tielman.

Why don't those damned preservationists like TIM TIELMAN do cool stuff like this instead of obstructing everything?

:D

Why not piggy back on the festivals at the Larkin and festivals at the Central Terminal to get a petition to extend the light rail there?

I think that would be fantastic!
