Every year this grassroots festival adds more events and attractions. It also attracts more and more visitors as the street's shopping district continues to flourish. Now reawakening with cafes, galleries, bars and restaurants, there's even more reason to celebrate Amherst Street and Black Rock.
Along with the local business flare, I love the different aspects that the Discover Amherst Street Festival has to offer. There's a Best Pie in Black Rock contest, a down-home style parade, a Strawberry Shortcake Festival and plenty of food and festivities for both kids and adults. But the best part of the event, for me at least, is exploring all of the different shops and eateries. You really get the feeling that you've stepped back in time to a place that is steeped in history - while some things have changed dramatically, it can be hard to tell at first glance. I believe that old world vibe is part of Amherst Street's special appeal.
