15th Annual Elmwood Village Summer Concert Series

15th Annual Elmwood Village Summer Concert Series
The Elmwood Village Association recently announced the line-up for the 2012 Free Concert Series at Bidwell Parkway. This summer marks the 15th consecutive year that the music series has been showcased, and over the years there has been quite a large following of fans. The family-friendly event is intended to get people out using the park system, while introducing them to some of the finest musical acts around. The intention is also to draw people into the city to experience all that that there is to offer. Being situated at the heart of Elmwood Avenue, there are plenty of restaurants and shops to explore. All of the Tuesday shows are free (thanks to presenting sponsors M&T Bank and Damon Morey, LLP), and begin at 7pm.

This means that you can head to Bidwell on Tuesdays, Larkinville on Wednesdays, Canalside on Thursdays and the Albright-Knox back steps on Sundays (see here) in July. Plus, there's plenty of live music to catch on the off-days, or later in the evening. Here's the line-up for Bidwell Parkway:

July 3 - The Shadows Motown & Soul Revue featuring Barbara St. Clair & Billy McEwen
Sponsored by Buffalo Seminary. Backed by some of Buffalo's finest blues musicians, Jazz veterans Barbara St. Clair & Billy McEwen voice the iconic Motown sound in this soulful revue.

July 10 - The Skiffle Minstrels
Sponsored by Rich Products. An eccentric bunch of Buffalo musicians, The Skiffle Minstrels perform an energetic blend of Country-Western and Cajun standards as well as upbeat originals that are sure to "get 'em on the floor."

July 17 - Caitlin and The Moses Band
Sponsored by Gates Circle Wine and Liquor. Led by Caitlin Koch, who has appeared on American Idol and X Factor USA, The Moses Band has been the winner of 3 Buffalo Nightlife Music Awards. Caitlin's considerable poise, natural stage presence and gorgeous, powerful singing voice are sure to carry the night.

July 24 - The Mick Hayes Band
Sponsored by Try-It Distributing. With his sharp dressed attitude and his "born lucky" charm, Mick Hayes is sculpting the sound of Contemporary Blues and R&B with powerful vocals and extraordinary guitar playing.

July 31 - The Outer Circle Orchestra
Sponsored by Delaware District Common Council Member Michael LoCurto. As masters of the African-Caribbean and World Beat sound, Outer Circle Orchestra excites audiences with their eclectic mix of structured and improvised music.

August 7 - Neville Francis and The Riddim Posse
Sponsored by Block Club. Neville Francis, a two-time Juno Award winner, along with the Riddim Posse will impress with their blend of Reggae and Afro-Caribbean music as one of Western New York's favorite party bands.

August 14 - Kevin Doyle and Sol Y Sombra
Sponsored by Sinatra and Company. In the 12 years of their existence, Sol Y Sombra has strived to express a wide range of musical styles including Latin, Jazz, Progressive, and Traditional, representing the musical heritage of multiple ethnicities embodied in the complexity of American life. This show is sure to make you dance!

...using the park system? But this is a PARKWAY. People should not gather in a parkway.

Can I get an amen Mr. Sanders?

Yeah! What the hell! People actually have the nerve to drink alcohol at these concerts! Some people actually show up EARLY to find a good spot to sit and some of the earlybirds actually set up tables and chairs!!! Call the cops Mr. Sanders!!!!!

Exactly. You don't hear Ted Black complaining about this stuff.

Enough with the personal attacks on this guy. I know it makes you feel good about yourself insulting a guy over the internet, but it ends up making this website look childish, immature, and just plain stupid. People will stop coming here if they view the website as a place where you can come to attack people personally.

I've read the back story and understand why people are annoyed at this guy...but seriously? Give it up.

"Nope, sorry....don't know him, don't care to know him...or you for that matter."

That's GOTTA be Bruce. The level of pomposity, bluster and "Frasier Crane" feel to that retort make it a strong possibility.

Nope...still not Bruce, still don't know him.

I just think this whole thing is childish that the posters on this website are in a "fight" with this guy who lives in Bidwell. Take your problem to his face, don't be a little b**ch who whines online and gets excited because other people gave you thumbs up.

I don't agree with this Bruce guy, but publicly bashing....on a website? Come on, grow up people.

No one is "in a fight" with this guy and BigBrother87 I don't think you're qualified to be the referee over what should and shouldn't be discussed in a public online forum. I don't see any personal attacks here, just irony. The internet is a great place to debate/discuss issues like this, and the negative reaction (originally prompted by the indie music post from a couple weeks ago) might perhaps lead this person to tone down his rhetoric with respect to the use of Bidwell Parkway. BR commentors are rightly exposing the hypocritical viewpoints and somewhat bizarre actions taken by this individual, who routinely uses his own social media outlets to advance his agenda. You've made your views quite clear, so if you have nothing else to add, feel free to take your sanctimonious, school ma'am, lecturing tone someplace else.

Actually this site provided the information regarding the other (less highly regarded by Mr. Sanders) festival being cancelled. We are just pointing out the hypocrisy Mr. Sanders demonstrates when he cherry picks what events are worthy of Bidwell Parkway and we're having some fun doing it. No one is forcing you to read the comments so go read something else if you don't like it.

Does Caitlin and the Moses Band have a contract to perform at every single outdoor concert in Buffalo? There are other local bands out there.

This event is ok for the Parkway because the people that go to it drink wine, own 300k+ homes and are white and clean-cut. As long as our own kind want to use the parkway it's ok.

I was down walking around Bidwell on Saturday and noticed people sleeping in the park and as a non bidwell homeowner I wanted to call the cops. So I can only imagine how mad I would be if I actually lived there.

It's not against the law to sleep in a park, or in the greenspace of a parkway.

I don't have a problem with with someone stretched out on a blanket on Bidwell sunbathing, reading/studying, enjoying their lunch, or any other legal activity that might give them reason to nap for a bit in the safe public space they're currently occupying.

I have to agree with the homeowners on Bidwell, and draw the line at camping (sleeping) on the Parkway overnight.

I think Olmsted would smile if he saw a regular summer afternoon at Elmwood & Bidwell.

I will be attending a few of these concerts. I will probably bring along my dogs. To get a good seat (from what I understand, the best seats are across from the Sanders residence), I will have to arrive several hours before the start... I guess I should bring along my drum, and a few friends to play hacky-sack while I lay down a teeth-grinding and repetitive, but wholly funky beat.

are these concerts safer than the ones down by the water?...I read that two tourist got stabbed a few weeks back waiting for the metro rail at the free downtown thursday concert. I might just stick to ones in Niagara County this year...Lockport and Lewiston specifically

Do that.
