Construction Watch: Calumet Building

Construction Watch: Calumet Building

The Calumet Building's new windows are in and the 1906 landmark for the first time in several decades will soon have an upstairs tenant, the law firm of Kenney, Shelton, Liptak, & Nowak.  The firm partnered with Frank Parisi and Angelo Natale to purchase and renovate the 24,000 sq.ft. building that was designed by Esenwein & Johnson.

Kenney, Shelton, Liptak, & Nowak will be moving its offices to the building's second and third floors in early June.  Restaurant uses will remain on the ground floor.

Architecture firm Carmina Wood Morris prepared the redevelopment plans for the property.  An urban courtyard is being constructed in the rear of the building along with a brick and glass elevator and stair tower.  It will serve as the main entrance for the law firm and feature grass and landscaping.

I have to say, I love that the (increasing amount of) law firms based in Buffalo are taking it upon themselves to compete for the best historic renovation around down. Some that come to mind: Guarantee Building, Birge Mansion, 498 Main, etc...and now the Calumet. It almost makes me not resent paying their outrageous bills quite so much :)

Good to see those upper floors occupied. Does anyone know when they were last occupied? I'd agree with the author that it's been several decades...it's been at least 20 from what I've seen passing this building often over that time period.

Nice renovation. I wonder if they found any remnants of The Ku Klux Klan who once a tenant in the 1920's.

I'm glad I got to experience those outdoor-movie nights on the patio behind Bacchus while I had the chance. Great memories.

Would be great if they could add the cornice back, but having the building renovated and fully occupied will work.

If you want to restore it then put the cornice along the roofline back so its a true restoration!

NBuff Guy....I heard that the outdoor movies will continue. And if it is a rain out they will play the shows in the newly remodeled room that used to be 3rd room.

That's great news! It doesn't look like there would be room for them, since the former patio, which was huge, was normally full. But I am happy to hear that they will continue. Thanks!

My 20 bucks says it has something to do with the red tape in the City. Probably can't get their "delicious food distribution permit". Maybe a food truck adjust fire and the downtown businesses are just gonna start fighting against anything that might steal any of their business.

I walk by the Calumet every day, and I saw the door open and construction going on in the new Mighty Taco space yesterday morning. So, it's totally happening...

We would have loved to restore the cornice, but it was just too expensive to reproduce the Cast Iron Brackets and the Gutter System.

Any law firms want to make any of the following their corporate offices: St. Ann's, St. Gerard's, Trico, Freight House, and/or Marine A?
