Volunteers Needed for "Spring Cleaning" along WNY Waterways with Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper

Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper is recruiting volunteers to join the Spring Shoreline Cleanup on Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 9am to noon.    

With the early spring weather we are experiencing in Western New York, many people are starting spring cleaning in their homes and yards.  Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper, the environmental group whose mission is to protect and restore the quality and quantity of the waters of the Buffalo and Niagara Rivers, is seeking volunteers to help with "spring cleaning" of 38 parks and green spaces along our Buffalo Niagara shorelines.    

Individuals as well as families, community groups, employee groups, student groups, scout packs, and churches can help remove the unsightly trash and debris that has accumulated over the winter.  This trash and debris is harmful to wildlife and degrades water quality. This community-wide cleanup offers an opportunity for people to connect with the water as well as other members of the community. Volunteers that participate, will receive a thank you gift, and are invited to attend Riverkeeper's volunteer appreciation picnic following the cleanup from 12-2pm at the American Legion Post, 533 Amherst Street in Buffalo.

The support from the community and people coming together for this event has been overwhelming. Many local businesses have contributed donations and larger businesses such as the Buffalo Sabres' Green Team, Fisher Price, and many more are recruiting their employees as volunteers. Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper is especially grateful for the sponsorship of the M & T Charitable Foundation.

Some sites still need volunteers.  Sites that need the most help are Scajaquada Creek in Buffalo and Gill Creek Park in Niagara Falls. Last-minute volunteers can go directly to the Scajaquada Creek site at 9am located at 533 Amherst Street.
