Skyway Undergoes 'Pilot Light' Project

Skyway Undergoes ‘Pilot Light’ Project

Thanks to all of the BRO readers who sent us emails with colorful Skyway sightings this week.

If you've been prowling around the Inner Harbor, you too may have seen the test lighting that is being conducted by the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC). According to Kaitlin McGee Chmura, Assistant Project Manager ECHDC, the test pilot project is aimed at finding the most aesthetically pleasing display with the most impact when lighting up the columns. The final tweaking of the LEDs will be finished next week, when the color changing lights will go into full show. The ECHDC contracted with Ferguson Electric and LDI Lighting.

The next phase will be to extend the LED lighting further down the site, while optimizing the full impact and testing out color combinations, delayed rotations and light configurations. For now the lights will be lit from 8pm-11pm. Those who have viewed the light show have noticed that the best visual impact occurs when there are short time periods when the LEDs go dark, before re-illuminating with vibrant splashes of reds and oranges.

Light it up using solar, please!

Who gives two sh!ts about the beams, light up the whole thing. You need to make it visually striking, which includes the whole undersurface.

I think this is a great idea and a great plan. Glad that this is finally being done.

I totally agree with Kang -- let's "un-Buffalo" this project and half-a$$ it. Light up the whole structure. Then, get on the Cotter and go to take some photos of the skyline -- I guarantee there will be more cheers than jeers.

For those of you think tearing it down is a good idea, you're daft. There's no plausible solution to replacing the demo. Plus, you'll be pissing on the people in OP, Hamburg and Blasdell who use it to get into the city everyday. Imagine the congestion on the 190 and 90 if it were taken down. We don't have the traffic issues other areas have, because we have alternate routes.

My apologies, I was typing fast. I meant to place the word "not" in front of half. Let's not half-a$$ it.

Exactly, why make this look cheap, when you can spend a little bit more to make it really stand out.

.....not exactly the same, but you get the idea.

I completely agree - The beams arent the monstrosity that everyone hates, its the actual bridge that is awful....Light up the underbelly of the bridge as well please

The columns are of secondary importance. It is far more important to Light up the spans. The bridge should look like a ribbon of light at night reflecting the design of the bridge.

the outer part of the span would also cost a ton more to light up, I'm assuming, because of where the lights would need to be located.

If they just light up the columns then it will be a half baked job with little to no impact. It could be awesome if done correctly.

Did anybody catch the part about this being a TEST lighting? Let's keep our fingers crossed that the reactions are positive and the project extends to the spans... but if all they hear is whining and complaining, this will end up being another abandoned project instead of taking the idea to its fullest capacity.

I'm considering this a promising start. Please don't kill it with all the bitching.

Someone just run down to Walmart and get a few hundred packages of rope lighting and we'll string it all up.

That was sarcasm.

Whoever has the initials 'PM' over at ldi should probably stop checking his or her own drawings " typ four (8) per pole" lol

the woodchucks think it's absurd, the deer are confused and the geese are sleeping. Just what we need, more lights. Meanwhile the friendly, green crowd can hump their curly-Q bulbs!

Let there be more light!

Perhaps the illumination of the grain silos is on the horizon.

The ECHDC, commendably, is showing that they are continuing to be tuned into the public's input and inspiration.

I am wondering if and who would want to build under the skyway to further develop the Canal District? Kind of funny (typical Buffalo style) to build the streets right through those beams, blocking sidewalks and now shine cool lights and think it's 'Progress'. Just knock that piece of sh*^ down already!!!

i don't think anyone can build underneath even if they badly wanted to. just like you can't build alongside the thruway. the skyway sits on state-owned land.

Light the whole thing up, not just the supports. Make it light up light the Peace Bridge.

Love, love, love this! Reminds me of a causeway connecting Miami to South Beach. It's nothing special, but when lit up, is visually striking. I agree that it would be even better if the underside of the skyway could be lit as well. If the skyway isn't going anywhere, this is the next best thing! Great job ECHDC!

Also, based on the schematic, it looks like lighting the underside would be pretty easy. With the center light pole layout, looks like they'd just need to add a couple lights with no additional infrastructure.

Now let's light up the grain elevator across the rive

Try keeping it one color for a while, so one can enjoy and meditate on the beauty. The Peace Bridge's constant changing lights give me ADHD.

Anyone know what is going on with the 500 block of main street? I thought that someone purchased one of the building and was going to put a restaurant in? And I cant understand why the Iskalo building on the corner of washington and isnt leased yet? Old shoe place I think? What an incredible corner spot with such potential...Great glass windows, a stones throw away from the Hyatt, banks and eletric tower building...I cant believe no one has a great idea for that space...

I reiterate the fact that this is noted as a test. This concept is a great idea and only once the project has been completed will be the full impact of the design be visible. A designer needs to have vision and a thorough understanding of the principals lighting in relation to dark. Lighting the columns make perfect sense, as from a distance, this will have a much greater impact than doing the same old thing as other bridge structures are doing. Kudos to the design team for implementing something unique…..
