My First Anchor Bar Buffalo Wing Experience

My First Anchor Bar Buffalo Wing Experience
By Jenna Smith:

The Anchor Bar in Buffalo is credited with being the originator of Buffalo wings, which were first whipped up in 1964 by owner Teressa Lenz Bellisimo.

Although there are up to four different versions of their inception, Buffalo wings are popularly known as deep-friend chicken wings drenched in a vinegar-based cayenne pepper sauce. The official Anchor Bar account is that Teressa first served the wings to her son and some hungry friends as an impromptu late night snack. Now a classic meal in the city of Buffalo, their wings have become a common sporting staple across the country, served in heaping amounts alongside blue cheese dressing and celery sticks wherever a game is being played and people have gathered to drink beer, hoot and holler. Indeed, the Anchor Bar cooks up approximately 70 thousand pounds of chicken every month!

I first patronized the Anchor Bar after taking a trip to Buffalo for a business meeting. I had recently seen an episode of Food Wars on The Travel Channel, which had featured a red hot Buffalo wings contest between the Anchor Bar and its rival Duff's. I figured this was a perfect opportunity for me to render my own verdict, so I logged into YellowPages.com and brought up the restaurant menus for both destinations. FYI, this is one of the newer advantages of this online directory service--being able to find the menu of any restaurant anytime anywhere. For people like me, who often decide where they're going to dine at the last minute, this ability is crucial to finding great eats on the run.

What I found is that the Anchor Bar has more great food than just Buffalo wings. Since we arrived at the restaurant at around 5:30 PM we were having an early dinner. We ordered wings as an appetizer, which I'll describe last for the sake of dramatic tension. For my main entree I got one of the house specialties, the Veal Cacciatore, which was sauteed with onions, mushrooms, green peppers, and marinara sauce. Absolutely delicious. My companions got baby back ribs and portobello mushroom ravioli. We didn't speak once while we ate, so suffice it to say everyone enjoyed their meals.

Now to backtrack prior to the entrees, when we ate the wings as appetizers. All I can say is, it did truly feel as if I were eating something legendary, something that is a part of the identity of an entire city, an entire culture. I inquired as to the luscious sauce, which was spicy but certainly not dangerously so, but was told it's a deeply held family secret. However, I was able to purchase a few bottles of it. Thank God for merchandising.

We didn't make it to Duff's that trip, but there's always next time. I've heard their wings are even spicier than Anchor's! Or I may just hold out and attend this year's National Buffalo Wing Festival, which serves 555,000 wings annually to 85,000 attendees.

My first Anchor Bar Buffalo Wing experience was when a co-worker told me she found a charge on her bill for music because she was seated in the same room as a live band. I'll pass, Enrico Guidobaldi or whatever your name is Mr. FoodNetwork sweater. Anchor Bar is great for tourism and I love that. But you can get great wings at .... 80% of establishments in WNY? What's a realistic number there, because you can get good wings just about everywhere here.

I find their wings to be just okay, but agree that other places are much better.

What's NOT okay, though, is the last time I went there. I thought it odd that we were handed paper menus -- where were the usual ones encased in plastic? Then I noticed that the prices for the wings were marked up significantly. Then I noticed there were a lot of tourists filling the tables.

I later learned that whenever there is a major convention or sports game in town, the Anchor Bar hands out the paper menus with the higher prices, effectively "gouging" the out of towners and anyone else foolish enough to patronize them at that time, to take advantage of their willingness to pay higher prices and get 'authentic' wings.

I find that highly offensive, for a variety of reasons. I won't be going back there anymore.

Worst wings and dining experience ever was at Anchor Bar. Duffs and Gabriel's Gates wings are far superior. (Along with just about any bar in America)

Agree with the Duff's and Gabes Gate, but I have to say once you get outside of WNY wings definitely go down in quality, bar or otherwise.

Skip Duffs and go down the street to Elmo's. I would also lower expectations for the Wing Fest. I do think it's a great event, but it lacks a lot of local establishments which generally have far superior wings.

The Anchor Bar and National Buffalo Wing Festival are great for tourists and Buffalo tourism. However, if you are interested in getting the best wings that WNY has to offer, neither is the place to go. Duff's (Amherst location), Gabriel's Gate (Allentown), Nine-Eleven Tavern (South Buffalo) are the places where you can consistently get great wings.

Let's talk about who has the best fish fry, then!

(Answer: anyplace in the eastern suburbs. Blue-collar Poles know a good fish fry, and anyplace that served a bad one would never last there.)

Answer, Hamlin House, Casey's on Amherst St, Angies on Niagara, or the Viking on Austin St all have excellent fish fry's. Could be the Polish as they dominated in the Grant Amherst section of Black Rock for many years.

There is a force field in Batavia and Angola that prevents decent pizza and wings from passing through them.

The atmosphere alone at the Anchor Bar makes the wings great.

I am always amazed at out of towners love for this place. I meet people all over that rave about the place or are dying to get there if they have never been. It really is a huge attraction, people are mostly pretty simple I guess.

It appears that Lenz might be her maiden name - see Wikipedia. Regardless I added Bellisimo so as to incur no further confusion.

I always find it so Buffalo when people trash the Anchor Bar. We always desperately want an attraction and to be recognized. Then you have a place everyone knows about and seek out, and you have people telling them to get in their car and try to find places out on sheridan when they are already downtown?

Next time someone asked you where Anchor bar is from out of town do them a favor and spare them your list of places with better wings.

The wings there are good, and its a great place to watch a Sabres or Bills game.

Been to Bar Bill and don't like their use of chili powder on their wings to increase their heat. However, outstanding beef on weck.
