Firms Have Design Ideas for Medical School

Firms Have Design Ideas for Medical School
The four architectural and design teams in competition to design the new University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus have submitted their ideas for what the complex could be.  The competition is part of a $375 million plan to relocate the UB School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.  It will be built at the southeast corner of Main and High Streets.  Partially funded by a NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant, the project is part of the next phase of the UB 2020 plan.

Below are just ideas at this point.  The architecture firms are each competing to win the contract to design the complex which is expected to be built in two phases.  The final design is likely to be much different than seen here.  Firms were asked to give an "example" of the building they might propose if given the design contract.  The selection committee is looking at the firms' process, sensibility to the setting and surrounding neighborhoods, and expertise.
Competing teams and their initial ideas are:

A fifth team -- Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Gensler Associates -- withdrew from the competition after being awarded commissions to be constructed at the same time as the UB medical school building.
The winner of the competition will be announced in early May.  A public reception and exhibition of all the proposals will be presented at that time.
After selection the winning team will work more closely with UB officials and others to refine their design.  Work on the new complex is expected to start next year.

Wow- some terrific possibilities. I would be happy with any of them, but the HOK design is the one that I like.

Does anyone know if the city is still considering extending Allen Street past the metro station and into the medical campus?

these different proposals all seem to be vastly different in square footage.

Did the Medical School have a SFage size they were shooting for?

It's exciting to finally see a new building of this scale right on Main St.

Whichever company they choose (and whatever the final designs look like) I hope the side facing Main Street is not considered the "back side".

Please dont destroy the street grid, that is my only comment.

I like the size and the glass and the concepts but would like to keep the major streets intact.

Medical CAMPUS. Plenty of other opportunities to preserve the street grid.

imo the hok is nice mostly because its artificially lit in a way it will not appear in reality...

It would be better to see it without the lighting to make a valid comparison

lest we forget the "blue" glass panels on the federal courthouse so soon...

Really Kick Ass!

This is the kind of scrutiny that large scale (and even small scale) building projects should go through. Look at the results! "Place making" buildings!

Super exciting for UB, BNMC, and the City and Residents of Buffalo!

I think your all reading the page wrong I think HOK is the 3rd model Pelli Clarke Pelli Associates is the 2nd model the one that is lit up.

HOK is clearly the best design. It incorporates a strong Main Street presence while promoting a campus atmosphere facing east into the corridor.

How can you tell the Main St presence, the perspective is from the opposite side.

As long as they don't make the Main Street side anything like what Buff State did with the new dorm on Grant with zero entrances, huge empty space, and a security fence.

Grimshaw & Brody or the Cannon design get my vote for what its worth, probably nothing. Actually surprised folks havent called out HOK as 'suburban" and demonize it. I liked the verticality of the Vinoly design but then I saw their treatment of the first floor that looks like nothing more than a cold sterile wall. If they incorporated more street level interaction I might like that as well.

It would be nice to bring a Pelli design back to WNY.

Today, if you want to see a Pelli designed Winter Garden you must go to the World Financial Center in Lower Manhattan.

Good enough for Wall St. not good enough for Niagara Falls.

HOK's design looks like it crosses right over Washington and looks to really be a ni....

....Wait, stop everything. Isn't that an old building on the corner of Washington and High street ?

I mean, it's old and everything, and that must mean its worth saving. Oh well. Strike two for the medical campus. Does this building have a name, so when the "save-that-old-building" article comes out tomorrow I will at least know which one the author is refering to ?

I like the fresh new perspective of each rendering but I have to say the HOK design looks like something that belongs at Sheridan and Transit and could easily be converted into a football stadium. I'm going with the up-to-the-curb transparent design of Cannon Partnership.

Main Street first floor should be designed for retail. First floor windows should comply with Buffalo code and not be tinted.

Architecture today seems to be more about "look what we can design with computers", why? "who cares?"

Score: -4 ( 6 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

If UB really cares about the local economy it will pick the Cannon partnership, as it would keep
Jobs in the area. 375 million represents millions in design fees that should stay in the local economy!

For consistency, should all public sector projects in all other cities, states, and nations never choose Cannon, but instead choose a local to them?
Maybe such projects in other places shouldn't even allow Cannon to bid, since they aren't local to them? Oh wait that's different because, umm....

"Actually in some states it is mandated that public money be spent locally."

cooper, are you sure that's really true?

Wouldn't it violate federal law for public projects that include even the slightest amount of federal money? Just asking. For that and other reasons, I'd be surprised if any do.

What are any examples of states who do it?
I'll admit I'm mistaken about the legality if you can provide any.

Purely conceptual. Call me in ten years when they start pouring the foundation. Does anyone else notice that 95% of announced projects to be constructed 'soon' never come to fruition?

Score: -3 ( 7 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

I prefer the Vinoly and the Grimshaw (the bottom two). They are the most creative and unusual. Whether they are practical, I don't know. But they are the most visually arresting. The Cannon design is visually arresting, too, I admit, but it looks rather silly, like a bunch of shoe boxes sitting on the floor of your closet.

McHOK is resorting to Christmas lights to get their cookie cutter designs noticed? They haven't had more than a handful of fresh ideas since Pilot Field, and even those get rubber-stamped ad nauseum onto every subsequent project they get.

Score: 0 ( 6 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

Is it just me, or does each of these designs include removal of the MetroRail station? (except perhaps Cannon/Pelli, I can't quite tell)

WTF is up with that???

Score: 1 ( 3 votes ) Vote up Vote down Report this comment

From the Buffalo News article -
"The site includes the Allen- Medical Campus Metro Station, and UB has an agreement with the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority to move ahead with incorporating a new station as part of the medical school building, a UB official said."

That's partly why I was asking whether they were still looking into extending Allen St. Is UB taking over the entire site or does the city retain any Right Of Way still to extend Allen? It's not very clear.

Plus not all the renderings above show the Main St side, so it's hard to see what they did on that corner.

DR - the answer is . . . the former site of the Langston Hughes Cultural Institute, 25 High St.

An unshuttered eye (from a vantage point across the street from the front of the building) would probably see it has architectual essence -- notice the windows.

Am I the only one who thinks the Canon design it better? I mean the HOK plan is visually charming, but take the light feature away and what do you really have? The Canon design has cooler lines and actually looks cutting edge. The other design is just a lit up version of an L shaped building.
