B. Ferrante's Italian Bakery
Comments
Leave a commentI have been looking for a decent Italian bakery in Buffalo. I wish they located where Sweet Tooth was.
I am happy to see the hours open on the weekend however, in general, I really wish Grant St was opened past 3pm during the week.
Maybe there is something I am not aware of that happens there past that time but it would be nice to go to sweetness after work once in a while. Just a thought!
I look forward to checking this place out. Best of luck!
Call her "mom" not "mum". Quit trying to be a hipster or Canadian or what ever you're trying to be minus an American.
Sarah called her mom "mum" in the interview. Just paying respect to her family.
Yay new bakery on Grant Street!
As for the 3pm closing time, I asked someone at Sweetness about this. They said that when they were open after 3pm, they didn't get many new customers, just existing customers staying longer and not buying anything. So, while I'd love to get my afternoon coffee at 4pm, I get why they're not open.
Awesome a new bakery. We read about this last month on buffalohipstar.com. Now, they also mentioned an African Jewelry store going in that building. I guess if they had the Grant St bakery right then they must be right about the other stuff.
The comments about closing time remind me of piece Newell wrote a few months back about the challenges of buying local due to limited hours of small shop owners. I have a shop on the same block of Grant St., and I'd have to say 3 PM is the right call for closing time. We keep our doors open until 6 pm and 8 pm on Thursday nights not because the traffic justifies it, but because one of the commitments we made as a family when we decide to pursue a small a business was to do our small part in improving the amount of traffic and nightlife (or perhaps more accurately "evening-life") our stretch of the west side sees. We've been able to do this as we've opened a shop that is family friendly - after school my kids get dropped off at the store and do their homework here. If I had a weekly payroll to meet or was in the kind of business that kept me away from family for long stretches of time, we likely would have revised our hours by now.
While I understand the importance convenience and evening hours, my critical mass of shoppers are in the afternoons. In reality I think we could be open from 11 to 3:30 PM on weekdays and not see a significant change sales. We're still keeping the hours in part because of our aforementioned mission and the belief that for a small new shop, every first impression counts and staying late for just one new face is a worthwhile investment. We're just keeping our fingers crossed that with all the good things happening on this stretch of Grant St., our business will grow with the neighborhood and eventually justify the hours, or best case...help create more traffic that justifies more shops staying open late with us!
I find it interesting that stores close at 3 PM. I am not from Buffalo so its hard to understand such an early closing time. What about people who work until 5 or 6? How can they do any shopping?
In any case, your mentioning that there is a lack of foot traffic after 3 PM reminded me of a similar problem in DT LA. They didn't have any foot traffic after 5 PM in their historic district. For decades, DT LA has closed up around 5 PM for the nite. It was perceived as no man's land. People in the historic district wanted to change that perception.
Since there were a number of art galleries in the District, they started an arts walk I think twice each month. The arts walk has become a major success and now there is ample pedestrian traffic most hours of the day. Its like they educated people to walk the streets. You might consider a similar move in your district. Here is the website for the arts walk:
I am happy for Grant Street but sad that Elmwood has so many open spaces for a great bakery and there is a real need for one as well but the leasing prices are still probably turning alot of potentials away.......
All you people Boo-Hooing about the bakery not being on Elmwood should shut your pie holes. We are finally getting to have fun over here in the Grant/Ferry neighborhood. You still have plenty of shops and restaurants to enjoy. :)

Smart idea to be open on Saturday & Sunday as opposed to Monday & Tuesday. Wishing you the best of luck.
