Anderson Cooper Hears About Dyngus Day, Laughs Uncontrollably

Anderson Cooper Hears About Dyngus Day, Laughs Uncontrollably
You may find this surprising, but not everyone is familiar with Dyngus Day. And when people hear about Dyngus for the first time, they often laugh.

Well, CNN's Anderson Cooper did a segment on Buffalo's Dyngus Day history last night during his recurring feature, The Ridiculist, and boy did he think Dyngus Day was funny. He made it through the first couple minutes of the segment without laughing but, once there was mention of girls hitting boys with pussy willows, Cooper lost it.

And a minute-long gigglefest ensued. Now, this isn't Cooper's first hysterical breakdown. He's had laughing fits before. But this one was particularly entertaining. And it's about Dyngus Day.

To the CNN staff's credit, they did provide Cooper with some quality Dyngus Day lines in the segment including "There ain't no party like a Dyngus Day party cause a Dyngus Day party is the most random excuse to drink there is."

Be sure to watch the entire clip below. It's worth your time.

God, are we that touchy that we get on the defensive train when made fun of? You'd think that after 30+ years of getting mocked we'd grow numb to it.

I think he had the right reaction to it. I always thought that the whole thing about Dyngus day is that it is SUPPOSED to be ridiculous. That's the whole idea. It's no time to be serious. That's the great thing about it. Anytime people have the chance to get drunk and have a good time, I think it's a great thing.

I totally agree! I love that one of our kick ass holidays made the national news and got such a reaction from a professional.
Take it in stride Buffalo! It really is a silly holiday, but don't take offence to it!

I love the reaction! AC is laughing at hitting people with pussy willows and squirting water. How can you blame him? That is funny. Dyngus Day isn't a solemn festivity. It's supposed to be fun and lighthearted. If anything, this clip should be the official promo nationwide for Dyngus Day in Buffalo. It's a fun party. It's ok to laugh :-)

Not growing up in the area, I had no clue about Dyngus Day. When the whole pussy willow/water gun ritual was described to me the first time I thought it was ridiculous too, especially with a name like Dyngus. Sounded like some name Butthead would call Beavis.

Now that I've been to a few, I have to say that Dyngus Day is an awesome event to be a part of every year, and each time I've gone the crowds have been bigger and bigger.

So what if Anderson Cooper has a gigglefest. It is a fairly strange-sounding event to the untrained ear. Besides, theres no such thing as bad publicity right?

Tough-in-Cheek maybe... ridiculous no. What IS ridiculous is Anderson Cooper. Although light-hearted publicity for our Queen of Cities is always a good thing, Cooper looks ever so foolish as a professional broadcaster who can't get through the mention of Salix discolor (American Willow) without loosing it. But WayToGo Eddie D(obosiewicz)for his work in the community and for reppin for us on CNN :)

Buffalo might actually might just be the most sensitive city in the world. Lighten up people, Dyngus day is hilarious and so was that clip. There are still people here that get mad when someone says it snows here.

Like someone said, no publicity is bad publicity, So lighten up. Wikipedia has an interesting write up on it. Its actually an ancient tradition celebrated in much of Eastern Europe, and in a surprising number of places in the US. This is good PR. In Fact, maybe the Conv & Visitors Bureau ought to double down on it. Even the Buffalo Wing had a lowly beginning , now its a national fast food.

Dyngus Day was MEANT to be fun, and the Buffalo take on it has certainly embraced some of the more outlandish ways of enjoying the day... no different than many of the bizarre spectacles that can be seen at Mardi Gras... and that it totally a good thing.

I enjoyed the fact that he got a laugh out of it. I always share the fun photos with friends and they usually say it looks like a blast.

But CNN and Cooper did slightly skirt the edge of turning this from good fun to ridicule. I understand that next year Dyngus falls on April 1st, and Anderson Cooper himself will be invited to attend as the "Pussy Willow Prince".

The second time, Anderson's BuffaloDyngusDayTime, folks in the studio didn't laugh until Anderson said "stupid", and then there was just a little laughing.

The next time, if his employers expect ANYONE to be amused, CNN will have to dub in a laugh track!

I like Anderson Cooper and his giggling is contagious. I laugh when he laughs where some others laugh and I ask what is up with them.

Giggling at Dyngus Day...doesnt bother me at all...its harmless.

Id much rather have postive humorous fun publicity of Buffalo than the constant negative drone of losing Buffalo Bills, dying Great Lakes cities, terrible snow storms and Love Canal type pollution.

Dyngus Day is Buffalos polish community spring version of milwaukee's German October Fest. I say make it a huge event.

One thing that can be said about Buffalo is that we are actually a very friendly social city...in comparison to others.

Some Buffalo residents' deep-seeded sense of insecurity is one of the least attractive qualities of the city.

Get over it, own your quirkiness and authenticity--it is what makes Buffalo great and unique. Phoenix would kill to have ONE festival as authentic as Dyngus Day...let alone the many, many festivals, events, charities that this city has.

We really are a region of despicable crybabies. What is with this undying inferiority complex this city has? *WE* all know that Dyngus Day is completely silly, BUT NOOOOOOO NO ONE ELSE CAN MAKE FUN OF US!!! HOW DARE HE LAUGH. What a bunch of spineless slugs we are.

We wonder why we're constantly the butt of jokes? Because of how we react to something so meaningless and funny as this video. Then of course, the media runs wild with it and has to quote Dyngus day organizers, so they can explain away their insecurities and extend the token/fake invite. "Oh you'll love it if you just come!" Horseshit. He doesn't give a crap. We're the loser in school that got picked on because he would scream for teacher whilst pants-peeing, and make everybody laugh at them, instead of just laughing it off and ignoring the bullies. God, do we SUCK!

Get the F over yourselves, Buffalo, and make an effort to love yourselves for who you are. have a little self confidence for just once in your miserable existence. And try LAUGHING at yourselves!! I freaking love it here, but not one second of that video made me angry in the slightest, but i knew hopelessly desperate-for-love public outcry shitstorm would come and just make us look 10.times.worse.

When I first moved here and was told about the holiday, I was POSITIVE they were making up Dyngus Day! This was back in the late 1980's - and my suspicion was probably fueled by other things they told me for "fun." For example: They told me Tunmore was a suburb between Kenmore and Tonawanda!

As many Buffalonians must agree, after watching Cooper's offensive tirade against our hallowed festival, I was miffed, to say the least. I imagined a response to his remarks, had I been on the show, but realized it was pointless.

I was most impressed with how well we took it. For being nationally "humiliated," our response was to congenially invite Cooper to next year's parade. Butter lambs and kielbasa are en route to Anderson's New York office.

Our modesty is something Cooper will never report on, though organizer "Airborne" Eddy Dobosiewicz is scheduled for an interview tonight.

Remember Buffalo, we are city whose blessing is our humility and community values. Self-deprecating humor is crucial on our path towards revitalization.

And to Anderson Cooper, is there a place you can truly call home? Not like this.

Y'know, I just re-watched the clip... he does say "its... *I'M* really so stupid". I think he was laughing at himself for cracking up at the word pussywillow than the actual report.

And the ridiculist doesn't claim Dyngus day is stupid, it says anyone who *MISSED* Dyngus day is ridiculous. Pretty much everything else that is said about the event is entirely positive.

I have to wait until the 1am feed to see the follow-up on tonight's 360, but judging from his tweets, I have a feeling that we'll get a decent apology for the misunderstanding... and a couple more minutes of airtime. Hopefully next year's April Fools Dyngus will be an even bigger and more bizarre blast and we can all call the folks who made a fuss over this the ridiculous ones.

He had the same reaction I had when I was told about Dyngus Day. So what? My husband said to me 'so there's a festival where women hit men with pussy willows and men spray women with water guns in Buffalo' and I said he was crazy after I stopped laughing.

It's funny, it's goofy, and it's different. Don't sit there and cry about it - I mean, if it weren't for the fact that it was so unusual, Buffalo wouldn't have had three minutes of mostly-positive fame on CNN, which is more than what this city usually gets.

Okay, so I know that some people are upset about this, but there is no such thing as bad publicity, and I think we need to take this as an opportunity.
Invite Mr. Cooper to next year's celebration with his camera crew, make him the honorary king of Dyngus, get shots of him enjoying our party and giggling. We could make Dyngus Day nationally known as a signature Buffalo event. If Mr. Cooper declines invite other personalities from TV - get Al Roker over here with a pussy willow in his hand to do the Dyngus weather. We could even invite Kathy Griffin, she loves giving Anderson Cooper a hard time.
The important thing is putting Buffalo on the map for something positive like Dyngus Day, show the country we are not just a snowy wasteland.
