Anderson Cooper: Dyngus Day Apology

Anderson Cooper: Dyngus Day Apology
As you've certainly heard by now, Anderson Cooper had a gigge-fit during a segment on Dyngus Day.

Predictably, some Buffalonians got outraged. Why? Well, because a lot of people just enjoy getting outraged. It's become a hobby for people, like fishing or golf.

The official Dyngus Day organization responded to Cooper's giggling by holding a "Pro-Dyngus Day Rally."

At the "rally," there were more media members than rally participants (as you can see from the YouTube video below). And there were more pussy willows than rally participants and media members combined.

To heal the emotions of the "offended," Anderson Cooper took to the air to apologize last night. And he brought local  Dyngus Day champion and all-about-town personality Eddie Dobosiewicz on to discuss the issue.

Oh, and the Pro-Dyngus Day organizers missed an amazing opportunity to make this "controversy" go even more viral. Chris Smith of Artvoice made a great suggestion:

A second follow-up to this dyngus day saga should be how "ridiculist" it is that so many people fly off the handle and get offended about everything and anything. I swear it seems every single thing these days results in an avalanche of outraged reactions and trenches being dug, sides being taken against one another. "If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand". I'm a polish american and I support dyngus day but the fact is it is somewhat silly and can tickle a nerve, especially if unfamiliar with it. So, we fauilt someone for being human with human emotion? Alot of hypocrite's out there. Offended by a dyngus day "giggle fit" but laugh or joke about something else that might offend. But always so personally offended. Always a movement to find fault and demonize others. Its sick. Giving Dyngus Day such a national stage has probably benefited the event tremendously as the video goes viral. The awareness of the event just rose 1000 fold. If you dont like it then dont do it, if you dont like what you hear then walk away, give your side of the story to defend if you must, but get over it. Its called freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is severely threatened and increasingly so due to this whole im offended so lets make a national media frenzy to shut you up or ruin your name. Is free speech truly free speech anymore? Nowadays I think its more like the right to consequential free speech?

I think Buffaloians are just sick of people making these statement on national tv. Most of the time, the reporters have never attended the events they are talking about or even been to our city. Nowadays, people form opinions based on things they see and read on the Internet, no matter how accurate or indepth. So Anderson watched a 30 sec clip and thought it was the stupidest thing ever and proceeded to tell this to people who watch his show about it. Dyngus day is much more than pussy willows and water guns but from Anderson's clip that is dyngus day. Anderson can say what ever he wants but I don't have to agree with it. Until people stop making these uninformed comments, expect the people of Buffalo to make sure everyone knows what's really going on here. We have freedom of s

I thought the Dyngus Day people handled it great and made more publicity! The went from a tiny blip to a segment and have gone viral. More people know about Dyngus Day today than yesterday.

This is so extremely blown out of proportion and embarrassing for Buffalo. Knock it off.

Yes, embarrassment is the word. Buffalo comes across as a town with serious LSE.

He has nothing to apologize for, he's the one that looked foolish not Buffalo. Nice to see that he has the class to have apologized anyways.

Instead of being offended, people should have been thrilled at the publicity. I thought it was great that he did a segment, and the fact that he thought it funny is pretty good too, because I'm polish-american, and I certainly think it's funny. That's sort of the point. Hitting guys with pussy willows while drunk isn't exactly a solemn religious ceremony!

This is a complete joke -- honestly. The only thing worse than being made fun of for a stupid holiday is holding a protest over being upset that our stupid holiday was made fun of.

What's even more embaressing? The yokel they chose to interview who said Dyngus Day is fun, because its a funny word that's spelled with a Y.

Long story short, Anderson Cooper is right. Now, let's move on.

the entire event has a high goofiness quotient and that is what makes it so lovable. i mean, come on, the zombies in the parade? they were the -best-! i wish cooper had seen them!

send him a gift, invite him to be grand marshal, show him a good time. win-win.

Bonus points to Anderson for pronouncing Dobosiewicz without a stumble! (BTW, the line forms behind me for anyone else who wants to swat his tush with a pussywillow next year!)

So. F-ing. Stupid.

This makes Buffalo look like the Sidney Crosby of cities.

That AC and CNN spent 6m30s on this and on national television is a bigger joke than [insert sarcastic comment here].

Airborne Eddie for Mayor! Remember something folks, the
National Chicken Wing Festival had a few pokes taken at it
by the national media in it's infancy and we all know how that
turned out.

GiggleGate has now filtered down to the local media in Atlanta. Guess what, ZERO mention of Buffalo or Poland, and only a brief description that he got set off by the words Dyngus and pussywillow.

Other than that, the local news reports are entirely about Anderson Cooper, his giggle, and how hard it can be for a reporter to contain themselves during a live broadcast when something strikes them as funny.

So much for Buffalo getting any publicity out of a situation that has otherwise gone viral and apparently offended so many. The story is now doing more for Cooper than it is for WNY.

The only thing funnier than Anderson having a giggle fit is this thread. I find it difficult to believe that anyone would be so offended by his reaction which I may add is not national news by a long shot. How childish, but then again you play with squirt guns and pussy willow sticks. Giggle

Dyngus day is stupid not for the ridiculous traditions, but because a bunch of drunk Polish people march down neighborhoods that do not have Polish people in it anymore.

This is just another example of how this country is today. People get offended over everything. They even wait for something to happen just so they can say that they were offended. USA=Politically Correct. Get over yourself everyone. I am Polish and I was laughing my butt off. People need to lighten up, and stop crying over every little thing.

Koz,

To be straight with you, I am offended by your comments. Why do you have the right to tell me how I should be offended by offensive offense.

Anderson Cooper may be invited to Buffalo for next year's Dyngus Day celebrations and march in the parade, which, incidentally, will also be April Fool's Day! And Cooper may be the designated Dyngus Day Pussy Willow Prince, or some title like that.

Only thing is, does Buffalo already have a "Prince Dyngus", Howard Goldman???
