Live yoga music and chanting at Shakti!

Live yoga music and chanting at Shakti!
Submission by Michelle Gigante, Director Shakti Yoga:

Two years ago I opened Shakti Yoga on Grant Street with the intention of raising energy and awareness in the community not only through the practice of yoga but with live music events. In that short time I am pleased to say that we have done just that! Shakti translates from Sanskrit (ancient Indian) as "energy force toward consciousness". What better way to experience that, than through live music?

What has amazed and delighted me is that our home on Grant Street has become a cultural destination for local artists and those from around the country. Shakti has hosted well-known yoga singer Dave Stringer. Recording artist Michael Franti, who when on tour in Buffalo, chose Shakti for his yoga practice. Last week, Mike Cohen who is headlining the Toronto Yoga Conference played for us and has made many return visits to our venue. Often these national figures approach me hoping to come to Buffalo to play in our temple of a building.

This Saturday March 31 at 8pm Shakti will host Canadian Devotional Chant artist Brenda McMorrow. Brenda has also played Shakti before and requested that her first stop on her US tour be o our stage. Photo by Rishi Kumar

Brenda is a featured artist on the White Swan Records roster, a Colorado label well known for it's high-profile yoga-inspired artists like Deva Premal. She has accompanied Grammy award winning cellist David Darling and esteemed Kirtan musicians Jai Uttal, Wah!, David Newman, Girish and Dave Stringer, and has been invited to Bhakti Yoga festivals and events across the U.S., Canada, Italy and Germany as part of her most recent tour schedule.

Once a month Shakti has a kirtan (live yoga music with chanting). Kirtan is becoming the latest craze throughout the country and around the world and goes hand and hand with the practice of yoga. There are now festivals all over the globe that host many famous musicians and vocalists with thousands of spectators and participants gathering to chant. Shakti is dedicated to being a driving force in the cultural experience of our community by hosting top artists that raise consciousness through energy. This is a unique opportunity to come together and share a musical experience. Come to listen, feel free to dance, or participate by chanting back. Whether you are drawn to eastern music or western sounds you will enjoy Brenda's skillful blend of both.

Suggested donation for this recording artist is $20 the evening of event. Sliding scale for artists. CDs will be available for purchase.
