Disappointing, Revised Casino Plans Unveiled

The Seneca Nation unveiled a new design for the Buffalo Creek casino complex on their nine-acre site in the Cobblestone District.

It's a much smaller proposal than what was once envisioned.

In 2007, the Senecas proposed a 206-suite, 22-story luxury hotel tower, 90,000 sq.ft. gaming hall and 2500 space parking structure.  Construction on the $333 million project stalled in 2008 due to a sputtering economy leaving a four-story steel skeleton to rust.  Crews have begun dismantling the steel

A Groovy Getaway On Forest Avenue
Whether it's a mixed crowd or a mixed drink, MIXology hopes to attract those looking for a different nightlife scene - one that is totally relaxed, a bit eccentric, with yummy cocktails and fun music. Owner John McNeill, with the duly noted help of friend Barton Crowell, has dreamed up a groovy getaway that has got to be seen to be believed (see background). John is a professed lighting nut. While waiting for the liquor license (for six months), he spent his time tinkering around the place - hooking up vintage lava lamps,

Buffalo Green Code: Phase II Kicks Off With April 10th Session

The Buffalo Green Code is entering its second phase this spring with citizens, planners, and consultants turning their attention to the work of actually writing a new zoning ordinance that will shape Buffalo's regeneration in the 21st century. The new code will make Buffalo more sustainable in the years to come - economically, environmentally, and socially.

Much has happened since last fall when about 400 citizens assembled on "Planning Day in Buffalo" to review the first draft of Buffalo's Land Use Plan. Staff from the Mayor's Office of

Buffalo’s First Sister City Marks 50 Years in this Year of the Dragon
By Mark P. Lazzara:
In the 1960's Buffalo's economy was at its peak, and the notion to engage in cultural exchanges started to take hold in some artistic and academic circles at a time when such exchanges were almost unheard of, and considered by some a risky new idea.  Risks aside, a group of citizens moved forward to establish a cultural exchange between the city of Buffalo and Kanazawa, Japan. Now, fifty years later, one of the oldest cultural exchanges in the country, the Buffalo-Kanazawa, Japan Sister Cities Alliance is still thriving!

Simple Solutions for a Vibrant Waterfront
Letter to the Editor by Julia M. Spitz:
I firmly believe Explore & More Children's Museum should be on the Buffalo Waterfront. Personally, as resident of the Cobblestone Lofts @ 95 Perry Street, I spend a lot of time at the Inner Harbor waterfront park on a daily basis to walk my dog.  In the summer, I regularly eat at Clinton's Dish, attend the summer concerts & yoga classes & can often be found relaxing on one of those infamous bright colored lounge chairs.

Get inspired by Boomdays!
Boomdays is an event that is truly unique to Buffalo. It incorporates so much of our past, present and future... it actually tells a story of where we are and where we are going. Boomdays was the idea of a number of movers and shakers who understood that in order to capitalize on our future we need to pay tribute to our past. Each year we see hundreds of people flock to the Buffalo River, the Peace Bridge, the Inner Harbor... all along the waterfront to experience the past as it transforms into the future. This year, Boom Days will be even that much more special because the venue is changing

Kung Food!
Oh, how I love good Chinese food. I'll go just about anywhere for it  - passing by many a quick fix along the way. Unfortunately when it comes to solid home cooked Chinese food places, there are only a couple around, which means that I'm always interested when a new place restaurant up. Fortunately there is a fresh contender in town called Kung food, and believe me, the offerings are as good as the name. Not only is the food freshly prepared, the atmosphere is welcoming and the service is some of the best around. Maybe that's because the owners, the staff, friends and family are some of the

Parkside Community Association’s 14th Annual Tour of Homes
Each year the Parkside Community Association rallies the neighborhood together to showcase some of the most beautiful houses in the city. One of the things that I like so much about the Parkside neighborhood is the variety of architecture that one can see from street to street. From bungalows to Victorian's... there's even a Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece - the Darwin Martin House.
As much as I love The Martin House, I'm a particular fan of the Toshiko Mori visitor's center - a stunning example of Buffalo's modern day architecture, and a perfect example as

Homefront, the 19th Street renovations
By Michael Hargrave:
Homefront, Inc., a community development agency located on 780 Fillmore, is part way through a large community rebuilding effort on the city's West Side. For the time being, the agency is focusing on 19th Street, very close to several other projects by organizations such as People United for Sustainable Housing (PUSH) and a few private investors.
What the organization is doing is far more ambitious than cleaning up a vacant home or two. They've gone and purchased

The Good Journey: 150 Years of History at St. Bonaventure University
Buffalo & Erie County Public Library Staff Review by Patricia Covley:
Attention, all St. Bona's grads - There's a great new pictorial history of St. Bonaventure University.  The Good Journey:  150 Years of History at St. Bonaventure University is based on the research of Edward Eckert and edited with additional content by Robert, Ann and Daniel McCarthy.  The book begins by describing the founding of what was then St. Bonaventure College in 1858.  The school continued to grow and while in a rather remote location, it was

SIPS & TIPS: A fundraiser for the Theatre Alliance of Buffalo
If there was ever a way to get Buffalonians to rally behind a cause, it's by getting some well-know local celebs behind a bar. On Sunday March 25 the who's who of the theater scene will be guest bar tending at SOLÉ on Elmwood Avenue. The evening is being designed as a fundraiser in which people can get to know the real characters behind Buffalo theaters while all of the tips (no, not acting advice) go towards the Theater Alliance of Buffalo.
This is a clever and creative way to raise money for a worthy cause. We all know that the culturals get the short

Celebrate International Cash Mob Day TODAY, in the City Where It Started
Waaay back in August, 2011, blogger Chris Smith had the genesis of an idea that has since spread like all over: the Cash Mob (Wikipedia).  Just months later, we're celebrating our very first International Cash Mob Day - celebrated locally by convening some Buffalo Love (and cash) at Ulrich's.  Details below.

As Cash Mobbing spreads across the nation - in a movement with interesting parallels with the
