Buffalo's Best Mac and Cheese Challenge

Buffalo’s Best Mac and Cheese Challenge
20 Buffalo restaurants are preparing to enter a contest that is designed to test their 'mac and cheese' prowess, by pitting chef against chef in order to declare one the winner with the best recipe. European master cheesemaker, Lactalis, has accepted entries by 20 of the area's 'mac and cheese' hot spots, and will be dropping off cheese kits consisting of seven varieties that will be used to come up with the winning dish. Chefs can opt to use just one, or a combination of the cheeses. Once the chef has concocted the official entry, that exact dish will be served at the respective restaurant during the month of March.

Each time a customer orders the chef's signature dish, he or she will be asked to take home a unique voting card. From there customers are asked to go online and judge the mac and cheese that they ate. Not only will the ultimate winning recipe garner accolades for the restaurant, the customers all stand chances to win a variety of great prizes. Buffalonians love mac and cheese. From the standard varieties to the gourmet versions, the dish is a staple at eateries all over the city and beyond.

The following restaurants are currently up to the challenge:

Chocolate Bar

I have yet to ever fine a Mac and Cheese that even comes close to Kraft. Now I love Bacchus, Hutch's Left Bank, Rue Franklin and fine dining in general, but nothing touches Kraft Man-n-Cheese. Nothing!

I think Blue Monk has a good chance of winning.

Blue Monk's is terrible, it's greasy, bland and overpriced.

I am surprised that Conlon's Bar & Grill isn't part of this, their "Not Joe Mama's Mac-n-Cheese" is the best I've ever had.

Fat Bob's is tasty, and the griddled mac-n-cheese at Lake Effect Diner has always been a personal fave. I'll be glad to try the challengers!

Gigi's mac and cheese -- a symphony of palate delight, along with many of their other "home-cooked" offerings.

Tally's is not on the list, and I haven't tried theirs. However, if the taste is as huge as the portions I've noticed, they could be worthy future participants.

On occasion, when the cupboards were bare just before payday, Mom would make macaroni & cheese, augmented by baked potatoes. It's always equalled "poverty food" to me, and hardly something to order in a decent restaurant. Pancakes & eggs were the next lower rung on the dinner desperation ladder. Thankfully, we never found out what might have been below those two!

one generation's 'poverty food' is the next one's professionally prepared 'peasant fare.'
