149 Elmwood: From Drab to Fab

149 Elmwood: From Drab to Fab
After witnessing some truly unimpressive facade mishaps around town, it's nice to see someone actually spending some time and money in order to spruce up a building. The former Claiborne Liquor location has gone from being jacked-up to looking impressive - and the work is not even complete. The liquor store had been at this 149 Elmwood location for as long as I can remember, and during that time it always had a rundown appearance.

When I first saw that work was being performed on the building, after Claiborne moved down the street, I asked a couple of the neighbors who or what was moving in. They told me that the property owner was fixing up the building hoping to attract a tenant. Now that's being proactive! Instead of letting the facade and the interior sit around and wallow in misery, the owner has stepped up and is adding some needed character to the structure. Even better, the building owner didn't wait for a holiday to avoid detection while sneakily installing an 'Acme Special'. All of the appropriate permit papers are in the window, and this building looks as if it's good to go.

Below is a Google image that shows the storefront as it looked during the Claiborne era:

This looks great. Definitely have to love a landlord being pro active and not using the excuse of not having a tenant to avoid repairs and upkeep.

Now all we have to do is demolish The Calumet and start that plot of land from scratch....That piece of land it prime and Calumet is awful, along with the propert next door which could be a great summer indoor/outdoor burger joint or something..Instead the Calumet uses it for storage.....What a waste of space, both places....

Did you mean the Cozumel? Complaining is much more credible when you present some evidence that you know what you're talking about.

Cozumel could definitely use some fixing up, but I dont think you need to demolish it.

As for the building next to it that is used or nothing, I think it would be the perfect spot for Cozumel to knock it down and build some outdoor volleyball courts for the summer. They could have tournaments and whole day events there. It would be something different for the city.

Fantastic! How do we give the owner a prize? The city lists the owner as LAT SINGH, CORP, fwiw. This changes the block, not just his building.

I've been watching this unfold, as well -- but had forgotten how really bad was the "before." It looks like some of the ingredients in this nice new mix are reused pieces, which adds to the positives.

Many thanks to the owner for making these substantial improvements to the building, that stretch of Elmwood, and the city!

So whats going on with 500 Elmwood? the city should show some cojones on that one.

Perfect storefront for a tattoo shop, Elmwood could use a few more.

What an unbelievable idea and its not my place, space and or money, so Ill run with it.....Demolish the garage next to Cozumel, border off the area, fill it with sand and have a volleyball/slash beach area for everyone to enjoy....maybe even put in a fountain of sorts for a cool off area....This would bring people back to your dirty restaurant....

Exactly what I said a few comments up!
Friends and I talk about that idea all the time. It would make Cozumel soooo much better, and something different to do in the summer.

This looks wonderful. It's hard to find anything negative to say about that! I don't hate on Claiborne either. I bought my first bottle of wine there a little over 20 years ago, and I still remember how terrible it was. I have a nostalgic place in my heart for that place!

Oh, and I should have been specific that the wine wasn't so terrible due to any fault on Claiborne's part. I was just barely legal (and poor) at the time and had no idea what I was doing. Probably made a bad choice.

so who's doing the work? how about props to the designer and/or builder?

Were those classical elements there, buried under the aluminum, or is the front all new construction ?

It is gorgeous, any one who looks at it will fall in love with it, because it is built in sucha amanner that nobody will take their eyes from it. The Greek style of this building is just amazing. It fits with our City Hall and Art gallery  perfect. The owner is putting a lot of hard work in to it. I'm excited every morning when I drive by to see what they are doing to make this building even more gorgeous. The person who is building it has an incredible talent. Cant wait to see when it's finished and what it is going to be. Those lights they just put on are amazingly beautiful!!!!!
We need this changes in our city!!!

Beautiful. One bad facade can degrade an entire block; one good facade can improve it. Little things like this are actually really important -- the bar has been noticeably raised.
