When we think about Black Rock Kitchen and Bar (BRKB), we tend to think about social gatherings at the bar or relaxing in the comfortable dining setting while enjoying dinner (details). Never do we think about heading to BRKB on a Sunday to enjoy brunch, but that's what four of us did last weekend. We had heard rumors the brunch was not your typical breakfast meal - or brunch for that matter. Whoever started those rumors was right in doing so, and thankfully we were introduced to an incredible brunch that will go down as being one of the best in the city.

First, let me start by saying that brunch is served all day, so you don't have to worry about getting there early. Second, don't forget that the $5 Bloody Mary's and mimosas can not be ordered before noon. Also, you may want to call and make a reservation as this is surely going to be a big hit (for a number of reasons). And lastly, bring your appetite, because BRKB does not skimp on anything, including the portions of salmon served with the Smoked Salmon Plate - that's what I got, luckily. Actually, I can't recall ever not finishing a NY-style salmon plate before, but this time it got the best of me. The salmon was super fresh and not at all fishy. The thick buttery toast was piled high, and there was plenty of cream cheese to go around. My wife got the breakfast tacos and she's still talking about them - it was just nice to have a breakfast option that was not so 'bread heavy', and the natural creaminess of the avocado paired perfectly with the fluffy eggs.
For some reason we ended up getting an order of potato pancakes to split. I'm not usually one to order them without a recommendation, but these were cooked to perfection. They were nicely crisped on the inside while being tender (and not too mushy) on the inside. The pico de gallo was a nice touch. Our friends ordered the pancake special and the flight of bruschetta, and we all finished off the meal with a round of Bloody Mary's. The entire brunch was a huge success, especially considering the range of options and the consistency of the preparation. The service was wonderful and the setting was equally as nice.
I'm so happy to have so many incredible breakfast and brunch options in the city. The only problem with landing so many, is having to make the tough choice regarding where to go. Black Rock has got some excellent offerings these days, and brunch at BRKB adds another layer of deliciousness to a street that is steadily reawakening with diverse taste options.

This place is always busy, you need to call days ahead for a reservation. The Black Rock Kitchen and Bar is a welcome addition to "the rock" and the growing Amherst St business district.
