Now that the pine needles on your Christmas tree are starting to fall off, it's time to throw it out. Stop! There's a better way to do the job. The City needs your tree to turn it into mulch. This is a win-win program. Just leave your tree curbside (see below for pick-up schedule), or take it to a drop-off center. It's that easy. Please try to be extra green this year and don't bag your tree - it kinda defeats the purpose of being earth-frienly when The City has to dispose of a giant plastic bag. The City saves $60 for every ton that it recycles, and you can be happy knowing that your beautiful Christmas tree is getting a second life - a life that helps to make our city looking great. Curbside collection of holiday trees is scheduled to begin on Monday, January 2, 2012 through Friday, January 6, 2012. City residents can place their tree out on the curb (preferably un-bagged) on or before their regularly scheduled garbage pickup day. Please know that trees will be picked up separately from garbage. Also, residents should make sure to remove all nails, stands, decorations, lighting and ornaments from trees.
In addition to the one-week pick up, the City is also offering drop-off points at three locations in the city from now until Saturday, January 14, 2012. The locations are as follows:
Cazenovia Park (Golf course parking lot), South of Seneca Street, at the foot of Wildwood
Shoshone Park (Parking lot) North off of Hertel, at the foot of Beard
1120 Seneca Street (Rear parking lot) Between Babcock and Smith
These drop-off sites will be open from 7:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For more information about the program, please contact the City of Buffalo DPW at 851-5636.
You forgot to mention that everybody gets Christmas again in the spring when the pine mulch gets spread in the planters!
