The R&L Lounge

The R&L Lounge
By Bernice Radle:

Have you ever been to, or heard of, the R&L Lounge on Buffalo's East Side? Do you have any idea what the East Side of Buffalo once held, as far as small businesses, community centers, tight-knit neighborhoods? Have you read the "Last Fine Time" by Verlyn Klinkenborg?

Buffalo's East Side was once a thriving, Polish community that was filled with life, Polish culture, bowling alleys, neighborhood bars and incredible thriving churches. "Last Fine Time" paints a picture as to how incredible the East Side once was. Today we know it as an area with very little hope - a place where The City has been tearing down the last of its remains (see reference post).

This past Friday, my friends and I decided to go to R&L Lounge on Buffalo's East Side. The pub is located on Mill Street, right around the corner from the Broadway Market. The R&L Lounge was indeed a time warp back into the good ol' days of the East Side. We were served pierogi and fish fries from two Polish ladies, one who was elderly and spoke broken English. The bar looked like it hadn't been updated since the 1950's and had an original old world charm to it.  It was such a fun experience and the food was unlike any other that I've tried anywhere.

These are types of businesses that we need to support, since they add to the original historic urban fabric of our city. The owners of the R&L, Ronnie and Lottie Pikuzinski, were helpful, authentic people who have been working the same bar for the last 50 years. If you want to experience the authenticity of the old East Side, then take time to pay a visit. I would recommend it to anyone and everyone to stop in at least once, and if you like it as much as we did, then there are even more East Side gems to discover.

They have the best pierogi's & pigs in a blanket I have ever had and Lottie definitely does not like to give out her secrets.

It is unfortunate that the craft of doing things the way they have been done for generation after generation seems to be losing its way.

Both Ron and Lottie are incredibly friendly and welcoming to new faces. Although many months goes by between visits, Lottie has a remarkable memory and ability to recall details from previous conversations. Pierogies, golumpki and fish fries are all outstanding. Food is regularly served only for lunch. A great place to visit and have lunch.

Its nice to see an article done of an eastside tavern, When so much of what you read are in places like Allentown or the Elmwood Village, there is so much of Buffalo we are not aware of. Great Article...

Did I just read an article about the Historically White/Polish neighborhood on the East Side and how a young educated woman found a restaurant in this neighborhood that is now predominately Black? And then you praising her for doing a great job reporting on the East Side! Ha. get a clue.

Now lets talk about how successful the Polish parade is!

A favorite stop on our Forgotten Buffalo Tours. Learn more about the R & L Lounge at:

The R & L was founded in 1969, but Lottie's family has been in the tavern business for over 100 years. Truly the LAST "mom & pop" tavern in Buffalo. Don't miss it!

This place is awesome. They serve dinners regularly on Friday nights. Warning though everything they serve is written on a chalk board no menus here. They are great people to talk to and hang out with.

Bernice, to describe the neighborhood as "an area with very little hope" is really not in the spirit of Buffalo Rising and totally discounts the work that teams of volunteers are doing to reinvent Broadway Fillmore and its resources. Some might consider parts of the Westside as "areas of little hope" just a few years ago before efforts were made to preserve, promote and rebuilt.

Just read this BR post from earlier this year to learn that Broadway Fillmore is making a comeback:

I have GREAT hope in Broadway Fillmore. Just the fact that you had dinner at the R & L is proof that the area is FILLED WITH HOPE.

She clearly didn't mean to slam BF-she wouldn't have written this post if she didn't feel there was hope. Fact is, this neighborhood is one of the most challenged in the city.

And, I do see the value of a new set of eyes and fresh perspective (particularly ones that represent the DIY twenty somethings) as important.

We're on the same team, people.

I think what she meant was "an area deemed to have little hope", not that there is necessarily little hope.

Best comment of the day. I am glad someone has some sense here.

Most of the east side was not really polish but german. The polish community is just one part of the east side's past. I think it is a little disingenuous to say the whole east side was polish considering that the "east side" is really a collection of many neighborhoods. broadway fillmore is one if them and that one happens to have been polish.

NOO! Why did you let our secret out! Went there before a Sabres game a few weeks ago, 3 fish fries, 3 pierogis, 4 Tyskies and 2 Gennies set us back $25!

My aunt used to waitress there for Friday Fish Fry's.
I remember as a kid how they S-Q-U-E-E-Z-E-D a small Polka Band in there. Everyone danced. It was good days. Medicore polkas and crappy dancing and great friends and food made for good memories - no, wait, GREAT memories that we cannot replace.
Good times and glad R/L still hang in there for us - although with limited hours. The Friday and Sat nights till 3am are gone. Good times! Gosh we miss it so much.

I love this place!

Please don't ever keep treasures like this a secret. The only way for these places to survive and thrive is to visit them often and tell EVERYBODY you know!

Thanks to Marty and Eddy for making me aware of the R&L. Our first visit was on Good Friday, and we have been back with friends and family 8 times since.

Our next visit is this Saturday for lunch after Christmas shopping at the market. You are all welcome to join us!
