2011 'Buy Local' Holiday Shopping: Day 6 - Blue Hill Kitchen and Home

2011 ‘Buy Local’ Holiday Shopping: Day 6 - Blue Hill Kitchen and Home
Seeing that Blue Hill Kitchen and Home (BHKH) recently opened on Hertel, I figured that I would stop by to see what owner Deanna Myers had in mind for gifts for the holidays. Apparently, this past Friday's Holiday Walk was a huge success and a lot of people happened upon BHKH, which turned out to be exactly the kind of marketing the business was looking for. Hertel is lucky to have such an appealing shop for people who are on the lookout for kitchen and home decor gifts. BHKH is one of those shops that does not lack in the 'perfect gift' category. That's why I was thankful that Deanna was picking out the selections... and here they are:

Best Seller:

Prepara's Flip Potato Masher - A quick squeeze of the sides flips the patented, stainless steel head 90 degrees, leaving the masher flat enough to store in the slimmest of spaces. No more jammed drawers! It's a terrific tool for potatoes, squash, yams or veggies and is top-rack dishwasher safe. This gadget is perfect for the chef who has everything, and who also likes to show off when having people over for dinner. The masher is a great conversation piece and is priced to sell at $22.

Great Gift Idea (lead photo):

Emile Henry's Grilling/Baking Stone - Made of all natural materials, and manufactured using Emile Henry's proprietary FlameĀ® technology, the Grilling / Baking Stone can withstand high oven and grill temperatures. The glaze is micro-crazed, which contributes to crispy, well-baked dishes. The Grilling/Baking Stone can be used on barbeque grills for grilling meats, poultry, fish and vegetables. It can also be used in the oven for baking breads, cookies, rolls, biscuits, pizzas and other baked goods. You can cut directly on the stone without damaging the surface and it's easy to clean with soap and water. Even better, it's dishwasher safe! Available in Red, Black, Olive, and Fig. $50

While you're there...

Why not take in a movie at the North Park? It's the perfect way to unwind after a shopping expedition. Right now you can catch the showing of 'Like Crazy' - click here for more info. This is a great old theater that continues to get top rate films.

From BRO post by Joe DiDomizio:

"The average filmgoer can easily see the gorgeous dome in the ceiling, as well as the tall pilasters on the walls leading up to the curtained wooden stage and hanging screen. The screen and the stage are relatively new; the larger screen is required to show newer films, and as such, sits in front of the original screen. Behind the tall curtains on either side of the modern screen, the friezes on either side of the theatre proper continue, into the proscenium around the old screen, with even more detailed and beautiful work, from these periods. The colors, a subtle polychrome (another hallmark of the Beaux Arts influence) mix of red, gold, light blue and cream, are unexpected, but look wonderful even tucked behind scaffolding and curtains..."

re: 'boycott if they don't celebrate Christmas':

How pathetic! Why must a store celebrate your religion with you? Don't you have faith in your own beliefs? Why do you need them to constantly reinforce those beliefs? What if Christians are actually a minority? (between other faiths and those who don't believe in religion, I think that's likely even right here in the good old USofA.)

In fact, Jesus wasn't born anywhere near December 25, but the pagan holiday celebrating the winter solstice was taken over by the Christians since the pagans already celebrated then. I'm not Christian, but like most people I celebrate Christmas. (I'm not Jewish, nor Muslim, nor other mainstream religion. I consider myself a Gnostic; not an Agnostic, but a Gnostic, fwiw. I march to my own drum).

I like it when stores recognize that not all people in the world are Christians and that Christmas is so big that non Christians cannot avoid it. I don't want your religion shoved down my throat every time I shop. Christmas is not just for the Christians. It's part of society's social calandar.

Religion is like a penis. It's fine to have one. It's okay to be proud of the one you've got. But it's totally not cool to ram it down the throat of every stranger you see.
