Would you want a plate like this?

Would you want a plate like this?
During a recent conversation with someone who had just moved to Buffalo, she told me something that I found refreshing. She said that she had lived in a lot of different cities, but she had never seen so much pride when it came to people wearing local t-shirts, applying stickers on cars and buying and selling Buffalo products. That got me thinking about a fun way to market Buffalo in a way that I believe could help market our city in a very inexpensive and subtle way.

Why not give locals the option of obtaining a cool blue Buffalo license plate for an extra $20 - and the extra money could go towards their favorite local charity? I'd be down at the DMV tomorrow if I could get a plate that showed my hometown pride. Think of the charities that would benefit. I bet that this would be a win-win for the city and non-profit organizations that are always looking for money.

Benefactors could be arts organizations, medical causes, park systems and various other needy groups. In a city like Buffalo, where there is so much home pride, something like this would mean that drivers with the plate would carry a message with them wherever they would go. And feel good about supporting local non-profits.

definitely a great addition to a license plate. and goodness knows we have scads of deserving charities. but wouldn't it be cooler to dedicate the revenues to metro rail expansion?

Yes, I would pay for this plate. It would have to be the new color scheme, right? The Buffalo would show up even more.

It would work out great for the state with the influx of new money for people wanting to change but innovative is not something the people in Albany want. Those yellow and blue plates look terrible so a lot would want to switch.

When traveling near Philly, I've seen people with plates for the zoo there, so specialized plates for a few organizations would work great. I personally would love to get something with one for the Bills or the Sabres only downside to that is money would go to the teams. Even offer the chance for people to get plates with the Bisons and the Bandits. whats the harm?

Great design...simple, but gets the point across. I remember hearing a story about license plates in Florida, how they had so many different charity designs that police had trouble recognizing what state they were from.

This stays true to the NY plate and shows pride in Buffalo. As long as there's a worthwhile cause for the money to go to, I'm in!

Georgia has the option, for only $1, of adding a decal that says "In God we trust". The DMV just sells you the sticker and you put it on yourself.

If the state isn't keen on franking out a whole new set of plates, they could simply sell (or allow other charities, etc to sell) a set of bison-shaped stickers approved for use on license plates.

At $2, $5, or even $10... it could be more cost effective and popular than having to trade in your old plates for a fee+$20.

Actually, the decal option might not even need approval from the state (somebody would need to check on that) if a private venture decided to manufacture weatherproof decals on their own. I've seen plenty of people driving around with those little blue/black stripes on their plates, hoping it will earn them a pass on their next speeding ticket. I don't /think/ it violates any laws, as long as the plate number is still legible...

Good idea!

Many other states offer more license plate options. Either that or they offer them for a more reasonable price, because I do recall there were quite a few options. I could've gotten 3 different 82nd Airborne plates while I lived in NC. Either way NY is typically lame.

I don't know, compare NY Military Plates
to NC Military Plates

New York in general has a pretty impressive selection, although I do agree the lack of WNY/Buffalo specific choices. I'd think the Lighthouse would make a cool sticker type.

The ultimate in vanity plates would be if you could have them made by the former elected official of your choice.

If a lawyer can assure me I won't go to jail, I might start making/selling these stickers immediately!

If you can get NYS to offer Buffalo themed license plates, or get rid of the puke yellow color they switched to, I'll be in a DMV line with cash in hand.

very cool, I had contemplated getting the Niagara Region plate from this page http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/region.htm
but maybe now I'll wait

Nowhere near distinctive enough.

I'll never understand why NYS can't be more like the states in the south where you can pick from a hundred different designs, and plates are CHEAP.

Oh well, someday it'll happen.
