Cantina Loco opens un poquito

Cantina Loco opens un poquito
While many of us spent the week shopping for all of the scrumptious delights that are synonymous with 'Turkey Day', Cantina Loco held a soft opening for its take-out operation. Considering that it was an unannounced soft opening, word managed to get out fairly quickly leading to what appeared to be a brisk business. When we stopped in on Tuesday, co-owner and chef Mike Andrzejewski was cooking up a storm, and the orders were coming out at a fast pace. Judging from the few friends who had already made the trip to the Mexican take-out stand, we were psyched to try out a few items on the menu, but we also realized that we were partaking at an extremely early stage, so we didn't want to get overly excited. When we saw Mike doing the cooking, we knew that everything was under control.

Since we were on the run, we decided to skip the starters such as Nachos Locos and Tijuana Tubesteak, although I have heard that the Tubesteak is pretty killer - "it's a foot long with bacon, cheese, refritos, bbq and salsa". Instead we opted to dive right into the chicken burrito, fish taco, vegetarian taco and a pork burrito - my friend really liked the chicken burrito and described it as very filling and tasty comfort food. He added that the creations will only get better when the entire establishment opens since he would have liked to try out additional 'accoutrements' such as fresh cilantro, a medley of hotsauces, etc. I was satisfied with my vegetarian and pescatarian selections, though I agreed that they will be greatly enhanced once the Mexican condiments are provided.

I am really digging the new signage on the building, as it reminds me of buildings in old postcards of the city. I'm also liking the deal that the owners struck to acquire a large patio on the Elmwood side of the building. At one point there was going to be a measly strip of pavement running along the back side of the building. Apparently the guy who owns the courtyard (and whose own building has been sitting vacant for over a decade) agreed to split up the large outdoor space. Maybe the addition of a popular corner restaurant might convince him to lease his own storefront (his heart grew three sizes that day...)

191 Allen Street
Buffalo NY
Open 4pm-10pm (or until everything is gone)
Full restaurant is scheduled to open mid-December

No to be a complete snob but, why wouldn't the fish taco identify what fish it is?

Can't beat Korean tacos... Looking forward to the opening!

this is a good addition to allentown and i like the signage a lot. however couldn't they use proper grammar with their name

Does "proper grammar" also include capitalizing the start of sentences?

Geeeez, Louise! It's their business - you're critiquing their marketing via grammar selected for the name of the business.

Get a life!

Andrew makes a valid point. If a business has such a loose grasp on the Spanish language, it might call into question whether or not they understand Mexican cuisine, whether it will be authentic. He was pointing out that the name is actually a mistake, and that just makes the business owners look a bit naive and foolish--not that I personally believe them to be naive or foolish. Still, I don't think this is such a small detail to overlook when it promotes the misconception that people outside of Buffalo have about us, that we don't have a diverse community, one that includes people who speak Spanish.

you see, marilyn. i studied spanish formally for over a decade, lived in spain & mexico and now i work in latin american business in buffalo. spanish is my life. it ticks my toc to see the language used so carelessly as 'marketing'. if you defended an ignorant statement about johnson park i doubt anyone here would tell you to, 'get a life'

Can't wait to try it out, but shouldn't it be "Cantina Loca" instead of "Cantina Loco" ?

"4pm-10pm or until its gone" Shouldn't it be "it's" instead. Not to nitpick, but why the Mexican English?

Not to get caught up in the details, but shouldn't this place be called La Catina Loco?

This is a great addition the Elmwood and Allen. I really think the place will knock it down, especially if the drinks are good and the food is of high quality, which it looks like it is, can't wait to try it and hopefully become a regular.

With that said shouldn't this article be entitled "Catina Loco abrió un poco" instead? I hate to get caught up in the minutia but....

I apologize for my last post it should read, La Catina Loco abrió un poco.

It is great that this block finally got an establishment which is must in need. I do love upscale Chinese, but I don't understand the name and the sentence structure. Shouldn't the place be called: 小酒店 名 疯草?

tried the food last week and was a little disappointed. my gf had the vegetarian burrito and was surprised that it was all Fried tofu? There was barely any avocado or anything else and she did not eat it. my chicken burrito was ok, but i hate to say that i will keep driving out to chipotle anyday!

I was super-excited to try this place, and went straight there after returning from a 2-week Chicago trip. I've been waiting for decent Mexican to hit Buffalo! (Don't tell me about El Palenque or the place in Niagara Falls, they are terrible.) The food itself? Not bad...we had skirt tacos and chips and guac. It was good and it was tasty. BUT $6 FOR A FREAKING TACO??? ONE TACO? An absolute joke. I asked the gal behind the counter if that was $6 for an order of 3 (as would be the case in most real Mexican joints) and she said, "No, that's one. It's about the quality of ingredients." UM, unless those ingredients include saffron and truffles, $6 is crazy overpriced. I can't see the folks hanging out on Allen paying those prices, and who else will eat there considering the lack of parking?
