Inside Tuscany on Main
The first of two exciting additions to the Elmwood culinary scene has opened. Tuscany on Main is filled with all sorts of edible delights that can be cooked and eaten at home with little fuss. This is the perfect type of place to pick up a delicious dinner on the way home, while also enjoying a dipping oil or two as you're whipping up a pasta dish. There's even a section of chocolates for that special person who is always in need of a sugary pick-me-up after dinner. I spoke to owner Jim Maloney who was happy to answer a couple of questions that I had for him regarding the business:
How many olive oils do you have ready for tasting at any given time?
We have over 35 olive oils and 30 vinegars on display and available for tasting each and every day.  It is

‘The Antonio’ Nears Completion

Ellicott Development Group's The Antonio (formerly Baker's Shoes) building on Main Street near Lafayette Square is nearing completion as workers finish up some minor work. All the new windows have been installed on the Pearl and Main streets sides of the building which is a drastic improvement inside and out. The amount of natural light that comes into the commercial and residential

NE Ohio’s Blackout on the Word “Sprawl”
This story recently appeared on Rustwire.com, a Cleveland based city blog which consistently publishes great stories on urbanism, shining a light on the beauty of the Rustbelt but also highlighting the foibles of our society and the way we build (and unbuild ) cities.  With permission we reprint this recent story about sprawl in Cleveland which just as easily could have been written about Buffalo.  I thought it would be good to hear a voice other than mine talking about the wasteful

Lead is Holding Buffalo’s Future Hostage
Submission by Ryan Mooney: There is a murderer holding our city hostage.  Lead paint in houses is killing parts of the city of Buffalo.  This often-overlooked concern is destroying the futures of many citizens of the city.  There are 36 zip codes in New York where citizens, especially children, are considered to be at a high risk for lead poisoning.  Eight of those are in the city of Buffalo and are designated as "communities of concern."  Indeed, we should be concerned. Statewide,

Great Lakes Water Security: Maude Barlow and Our Water
By Nate Drag:
Living on the shores of Lake Erie, it is easy to take the Great Lakes for granted. While Lake Erie often means beautiful sunsets, beach visits, and lake effect snow in our daily lives, it is important to remember that the Great Lakes also contain approximately 20% of the world's available freshwater.  As part of its Fluid Culture series, the University at Buffalo's Humanities Institute is helping our community remember just how fortunate we are in Western New York to have such an amazing resource in our own backyard.

MANNHEIM ROLLS INTO SHEA’S
The Christmas Music of Mannheim Steamroller by Chip Davis (a preview):       If you love holiday music, brace yourself, because Mannheim is a- rollin' into Shea's. Mannheim Steamroller, that is, the best-selling Christmas music artist in history with over 40 million albums sold.  (Take that, Bing!)  Even if you do not think you know the group, you have no doubt heard their catchy, irresistible sound. The unique mix of Renaissance instruments with rock & roll beats stands out in the sea of non-stop radio seasonal music.

What are visitors looking for?
Did you ever stop to think what people were searching for when browsing our visitors' bureau online? Visit Buffalo Niagara (VBN) recently posted the top ten destinations that people were interested in (or clicking on)*, both in Buffalo and the Niagara region. With 30% of the web traffic coming from Canada, VBN is starting to spend more time targeting what many Buffalonians have considered, for a long time, the low hanging fruit. After all, with the economy down, more and more people are looking at 'staycations' and day trip alternatives, rather

Free tutoring offered by Literacy Volunteers
By Jennifer Westerholt:
Many Buffalo Public School students are eligible for free tutoring and do not know it.
Under the guidelines of the No Child Left Behind Act, area families may enroll their child in Supplemental Educational Services (SES) if their child attends a Title I school that has been designated by the state to be in need of improvement for more than one year.
Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo & Erie County is proud to be a provider of these services and has recently initiated a number

Longitude
I just finished reading this fascinating book about the development of techniques for determining location on the globe in the east west direction, AKA longitude.  This has pretty much nothing to do with Buffalo but I thought I would share anyway.  The concept of longitude and latitude has been around for many centuries as a way of pinpointing a relative location on earth.  Latitude (usually horizontal on a map) is marked by a series of parallel rings around the earth.  They are marked by degrees from the equator and are often referred to as parallels. Longitude is marked

Niagara @ the Front Lofts

A residential project designed to take advantage of unique Buffalo River views is moving forward.  Ellicott Development Group is working with architect Charles Gordon on reuse plans for 960 Busti Avenue to create approximately 23 residential units and some commercial space.  The development company purchased the site in April 2008 along with a nearby property at 1050 Niagara Street from Ciminelli Development.

The 67,900 sq.ft. Busti Avenue property was built in 1930.

Spot Coffee Opens on Hertel
The wait is finally over and Spot Coffee has opened its doors on Hertel. As I sit here sipping a cup of coffee along with approximately 30 fellow patrons, the scene is reminiscent of other Spot locations with familiar sounds and sights. From the shouts from behind the counter announcing the various order fulfillments, to a large mural depicting a Hertel street scene, Spot Coffee has introduced a thriving 'people hub' to North Buffalo.
There are some differences that the Hertel cafe features, which separate it from the rest of the locations. The floor plan allows for an

Bills: A Play Away
By Kyle Gunn-Taylor:
It's the dream of every athlete to make the biggest play in the biggest moment. For the second time in two years, Bills star wide receiver Stevie Johnson had the game in his hands, only to let it drop to the ground, along with the Bills playoff hopes.
On a day Johnson and the Bills seemed to harness the edge they had lacked in the previous three games where they were outscored by a combined 80 points, a couple of Johnson gaffs cost the Bills an opportunity to win.

Preservation Ready: [Not So] Fairfield Library
November's addition to the 'Preservation Ready' list of buildings that must be saved is the beautiful and delicately detailed (former) Fairfield Library, located at 1659 Amherst Street at the corner of Fairfield Avenue North Buffalo. The building was designed by William Sydney Wicks (half of the talented and prolific Green and Wicks architecture team which filled so much of Buffalo with great buildings) for the Unitarian Universalist Church. It was built in 1897 and was also occupied later by another congregation before being taken over by the City of Buffalo for a branch Library in the 1920s.

Food Truck Food Fight in San Francisco

San Francisco, the progressive city on the bay, is facing a very Buffalo-like problem: Regulating food trucks.  Some restaurant owners in San Fran are irked by the expanding fleet of food purveyors saying the trucks are hurting their businesses.  Unlike Buffalo, the mobile food trucks have been operating in San Fran for some time (there are about 80 now) and the City has instituted a permit system and a new set of regulations that went into effect earlier this year to lay some ground rules.  The new rules haven't

Langston Hughes Institute Envisions Their New Home

The Langston Hughes Institute is rehabbing a complex of four buildings on Broadway for their new home. After closing their doors last year, the Institute is looking to make the move and purchase the buildings located at 163-173 Broadway. The historic row of buildings is located between Michigan and Nash, perfectly situated for the Institute to be a focal point in the Michigan Avenue African-American Heritage Corridor.

Marketing 101: Double Exposure
I always like to hear that businesses are working together. Usually it's through a business organization or association, though in some cases two or more owners will come together due to extraordinary circumstance. That's what happened when two relatively new businesses on Elmwood Avenue decided to help each other in ways that they could not do on their own. The display window that you see in the photo belongs to Chow Chocolat. What's unusual is that the display in the window was created by Sue Morreale

A Sports Bar Is Born
It's hard to believe that the Thirsty Buffalo has already been around for over three years. When the establishment first opened, it appeared to have a hard time shedding the image of Jimmy Macs, the building's previous longstanding occupant. Thirsty Buffalo touted itself as a sports bar, though the masses of sports fanatics didn't gravitate to the concept right away. In order to take the bar to the next level it needed to reinvent itself entirely.

Canine Splash!
By Jessica Edwards:
Canine Splash, LLC has been getting a lot of attention since they opened this past September.  It is a very funky place, with a playful vibe for people to bring their four legged loved ones.
Located in Riverside in what was once a widget plant in the 1920s, the business has made a practical reuse of its original factory setting. At the same time, the re-development of the building has allowed the business to be very green and energy efficient. The pools have a Salt Water Ozone System, which is more effective

Neighborhood Festival of Lights Underway
For the fourth year running, block clubs on the West Side have put together a 'Festival of Lights'. Between now and January 6th, households from Richmond to the Peace Bridge get in the holiday spirit and participate in a friendly competition to see who can make their houses look the most festive. Neighborhood and celebrity judges tour the neighborhoods in December assigning points in categories such as most creative, most thematic and most unique. Last year they even had categories for best use of LED lights, and most environmentally friendly display.

Chair Massage Pit Stop
This holiday season, as you're making your way from shop to shop on Elmwood Avenue, be sure to make time for yourself. Think about treating yourself to a free five-minute massage at The Neighborhood Collective. Entrepreneur Jason Jones is the newest tenant in the communal space - his brick and mortar salon and massage business is located in the back of the collective, but Jason is taking full advantage of the common space near the front entranceway. Earlier today Jason commanded an impressive line of customers as they waited to sample the masseuses
