Foo Fighters: Were you there?

Foo Fighters: Were you there?
By Joe Cascio:

On the cusp of the 20th anniversary of Nirvana's break through album "Nevermind" Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters stormed into the First Niagara Center on Sunday night.  The stage was big with a runway separating the masses of general admission moshers on the floor.  A cool component for those above stage level was that the stage was interactive displaying all kinds of cool graphics as well as a great light and projection show, but that all took a back seat to the music and the showman Dave Grohl.

They came out with incredible energy and asked the crowd if it was ok if they played all their music, then they did... well not all of it, but a blistering 2 1/2 hour, 24 song attack on the thousands who filled FNC.  As if their body of work wasn't enough they hit us with a great rendition of "In the Flesh" by Pink Floyd off "The Wall" as well as "Breakdown" by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, which was a perfect lead into a kick ass version of "Everlong" to end the show.

Just a couple of thoughts from the photographer.  Were you there?

That concert was sick. Grohl can sing some ear shattering notes at times, and his interaction with the crowd was intense. The guitar battle between Grohl and Shiflett tore it up and Taylor Hawkins was out of his mind. Good to see The Foos giving so much love to Buffalo, including lots of shout-outs, a Sabres jersey worn and tossed into the crowd, and an extended set that just kept escalating in intensity. After that show I bet we see them back again, along with some other heavy hitters from the label.

Great show! I saw the foos back in 2000, and they were very good. This just blew that show out of the water. If there's a front-man with more energy than Dave Grohl, I've never seen him.

Seeing Krist on stage gave me chills.

Krist Novoselic!!! Seeing a band that i grew up with from Nirvana to the Foos was just amazing but Krist freakin' Novoselic! I mean Come on! That is rock and roll royalty..3/4 of the most influential band in the last twenty years (i am including Pat Smear if course)! Who cares if you could barley hear his accordian it was a way cool experience!

BTW, Bridge Burning is my new favorite FF song.

I'm really surprised that aspect isn't getting more press.

I got a decent video of the song with Krist. Just put it up on youtube if you want to watch it again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5nIc35s26w Dave wishing him a happy anniversary brought a huge smile to my face.

A ROCK show for the ages for sure! How a review cannot mention the fact that Krist was there is beyond me, but at least it sounds like this writer actually was there unlike the canned review from Jeff Miers in the Buffalo News

@Arch you HAVE to include Pat - the happiest man in Rock

An absolutely incredible show from beginning to end. Krist coming up for Skin and Bones was such a special treat. They definitely earned every penny that walked through the gate that night. Between the Bills win over the Pats and this show, it won't be a day I forget anytime soon.

On a side note, the First Niagara Center looks great inside.

This was a fantastic show! Dave Grohl and his bandmates displayed a ton of energy on stage. I also happened to be about 5 feet away from the two-song tug of war that ensued among fans after one of the Foos tossed the Sabres jersey he was wearing into the crowd! Grohl's interaction with the audience was particularly fun. There were, however, two great moments that have generated little to no mention, one of which was noted in an earlier post. Krist Novoselic joining the Foos on accordion for "Skin and Bones" was a delight. Sadly, too, hardly anyone has mentioned Rise Against's set, which included a brief but touching tribute to Jamie Rodemeyer from RA frontman Tim McIlrath.

This show will go down as my all time favorite show. I'm not sure if it was escalated because of the Bills win, but it was a pretty complete and awesome Sunday.

I've seen my share of shows and do a lot of traveling to do so. Not so many rock shows at FNC because a really good rock show usually tends to be at a smaller venue (like Town Ballroom) but Foo Fighters absolutely destroyed on Sunday. I had been following setlists from the previous few concerts, so I knew what I was in for and was still blown away.

Openers were pretty good too. Rise Against really had my side of the GA section going nuts (occasionally too nuts) and Mariachi El Bronx was a certain change of pace, even if they played to a smaller crowd.

Wasn't overly impressed by Novoselic's appearance (he actually played on two songs, but was inaudible and obviously frustrated on both), but the fact that both were on the same stage was pretty cool.

Any truth to the thought that this may have been a product of Pegula? We didn't have too many big newer names come through the HSBC Arena during Golisano's era (Metallica and Green Day come to mind). Now that Pegula owns the arena, I imagine they are following his lead with the Sabres in trying to get other groups to come. I can only hope.

Not likely. Local promoters bring bands to town and it usually has more to do with the logistics of their tour than who owns the venue.
